DIVISION SPOTLIGHT Continuing to increase research output year after year, the Division of Vascular Surgery published 37 papers, presented 31 abstracts as posters and podium presentations at national and regional vascular surgery meetings, and received 2 grant awards between the years of 2021-2022.

“We have a team of vascular specialists that study all of the disease areas that affect our patients: cerebrovascular, aortic peripheral arterial disease, venous, and other areas. Our trainees and students take an active role in investigation and represent us on multiple national stages.” Dr. Jae Cho “We have multiple projects in the area of aortic disease. Recently, we have made novel observations that elevated NLR (neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio) affects outcomes in our patients. Dr. Karem Harth I am thrilled to be able to bring a new surgically investigational venous valve device – the VenoValve – to our patients suffering from advanced deep venous reflux of the lower extremities. This trial is open to patients who have otherwise received all currently available advanced venous therapies, yet continue to suffer from debilitating leg changes. Early human trials have shown improvement in clinical and symptom severity scores, reflux times and wound healing at 30 months. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center is 1 of 20 sites in the country to have been selected to evaluate this therapy. We are pleased to announce Andrea Hayes, MD, FACS, FAAP as this year’s keynote speaker. Dr. Hayes is a pediatric surgeon and Chair, Department of Surgery at Howard University. Dr. Hayes was the first African American female pediatric surgeon board certified in the United States. She is renowned for her work in hyper-thermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for children (HIPEC) and influence in the field of sarcoma and sarcomatosis. Dr. Hayes is a past president of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons and a governor of the American College of Surgeons. Read more about Dr. Hayes.

SURGERY RESEARCH IN THE NEWS The Case for Screening Surgery Patients for Low Health Literacy “In research published in the prestigious Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, UH Seidman Cancer Center surgical oncologist, Luke Rothermel, MD, and colleagues found that patients undergoing surgery for cancer at a freestanding NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center who had low health literacy had significantly longer length of hospital stay, even after controlling for sociodemographic variables. Study results also show that these patients needed more post-acute services, such as home-based physical therapy or occupational therapy, home nursing or undergoing surgery for cancer at a free-standing NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center who had low health literacy had significantly longer length of hospital stay, even after controlling for sociodemographic variables. Study results also show that these patients needed more post -acute services, such as home-based physical therapy or occupational therapy, home nursing or discharge to a skilled nursing or rehabilitation facility, again after controlling for sociodemographic variables and clinical variables related to outcomes of interest.
RESEARCH UPDATES Research Poster Printing The UH Clinical Research Center (UH CRC) has announced the extension of their paid research posters program through the end of 2022. For an additional 10 months (March 2022 – December 2022), the UH CRC will cover the cost of research presentation posters. To qualify, posters must meet the following criteria: • Must be a UH Faculty Member with an Assistant or Associate Professor rank; The Faculty Member must be listed as either the first or senior author on the publication • The poster must stem from a research project (quality improvement projects are not eligible) To obtain UH CRC approval: • Contact Bridget.Patrick@UHhospitals.org to obtain the Research Poster Request Form • Send the completed form to Michael.Baker@UHhospitals.org • Once approval is received, submit the form along with the specifications of your research poster to Taylor Communications, Jan.Lochotzki@taylorcommunications.com
RISES AIR – ACCELERATION INTO RESEARCH PROGRAM UH RISES “AIR” Program The new “Accelerated Introduction to Research” program will launch in July 2022 with the aim of standardizing and improving the research trainee process across the Department of Surgery. Participation is open to all surgical residents, research fellows and other trainees. The program will begin the week of July 11 th and run through August 17 th, with weekly programming Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings. The immersive curriculum will include the basics of biostatistics, clinical research topics, professional development, and mentorship to Allen Scholars and Research Fellows. All incoming Department of Surgery Allen Scholars and Research Fellows will be provided UH-issued laptops with pre-loaded statistical software.
