Nami: How many friends I’ve made! I still keep in touch with so many from all over the world.

Q. What was that like – everyone not knowing English as their first language?

Nami: In one course, most of the students were a little older than me, and they took me under their wing like I was their younger sister which was special; we all still are touch with each other! Another course, I was a little older than the other students, so then I became the big sister!

Q. What kinds of things are you learning?

Nami: We do many project seminars where we also share opinions. It could be a topic like the Big Island volcano where we do research, watch the news, and then talk and write about it. Or we’ll do a topic about something more personal like Father’s Day, and what father means to us or our culture.

Q. What are the courses like?

Nami: The teachers are very supportive and the class size is small - - - I like to speak and share ideas; yet know that I have to work on my writing!

Q. How did you find out about MLI? Nami: My father is Japanese and my mother is Korean; I speak both languages. I visited Maui off and on for ten years and settled here a few years ago. Someone recommended this course because I wanted to go to UH Maui and needed to be able to communicate in English. Having the ability to communicate in English, Korean and Japanese will be a big asset in the hospitality industry.

Spend Saturdays in the dark! All photographers with some knowledge of how to use the darkroom are welcome to attend this open studio. This supervised open studio is an opportunity to work in the darkroom at UH Maui College during the summer in a non-credit format to process black and white film and make prints.

Using Your Digital Camera in the Field This hands-on photography workshop takes the basic skills learned in level 1 to the next level! Photographic Craftsman and PPA Certified Professional Photographer, Aubrey Hord, uses hands-on experience with students and their cameras on the grounds of the college to demonstrate ISO, aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, focus, and other camera techniques. This course uses real-life shooting scenarios to help dial in skills, make correct exposures and ensure you are a more successful photographer!

Showing up for Death Nourishing Life Change your life by learning what you can do to prepare for your eventual death and the dying and death of your loved ones. We’ll look at the value of dying well and grieving as well. This class will cover advance directives, ethical wills, holographic, hand-written wills as well as look at the laws and choices in Hawai‘i, including home funerals, ocean body burial, home burial, body donation and direct cremation.

Learn what the environmental and financial costs of burial and cremation are. Through exercises, dialogue, journaling and art we’ll make friends with the inevitable. Medical aid in dying is coming (or has come) to Hawai‘i. We’ll consider the many issues surrounding this choice now that Medical aid in dying has come to Hawai‘i.
