The University of Houston System plays a transformational role in the economic development and the well-being of the citizens in the Greater Houston area and the region, providing programs and services that meet the higher education, workforce, health and cultural needs of our growing communities.

Providing these resources in an affordable, accessible, effective and reliable manner has become our hallmark. The UH System equips our students with the education and real-life learning experiences that prepare them to succeed in their chosen professions and become enlightened and productive members of society.

This Accountability Report presents the challenges we have faced and the success we have achieved. I am pleased to submit it for your consideration.

University of Houston System As the largest provider of world-class, comprehensive higher education services in the region, from the baccalaureate to the doctorate, the University of Houston System serves more than 74,000 students.

The UH System includes the University of Houston, University of Houston-Clear Lake, University of Houston-Downtown and University of HoustonVictoria, and instructional sites in Sugar Land, Katy, San Antonio and Pearland. The UH System also includes Houston Public Media, home to KUHTTV8, Houston’s PBS station and the nation’s first educational television station, and KUHF-88.7, Houston’s National Public Radio station.

The UH System’s public art collection, with nearly 700 works by such noted artists as Andy Warhol and Frank Stella, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019.

In February 2019, the system-wide “Here, We Go” fundraising campaign surpassed its $1 billion goal, 18 months before its scheduled completion in 2020. <4>

University of Houston The largest university in Houston and the third largest in Texas, with an enrollment of more than 46,000 students, UH is a nationally competitive, doctoral degree-granting, comprehensive research university.

UH, the oldest of the four UH System universities, has been recognized as a Tier One institution by the Carnegie Foundation for its very high level of research activity, is home to a Phi Beta Kappa chapter and has launched a College of Medicine to meet the health care needs of underserved populations in the region and the state.

UH has a yearly $6.4 billion economic impact on the Greater Houston area, awards more than 10,000 degrees annually and has more than 285,000 alumni, many of whom live and work in Texas. <6>

University of Houstonâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;Clear Lake UHCL has been opening doors for accessible education since 1974 and continues to increase its regional university rankings and serve as a destination for lifelong learning, economic growth and global impact.

Located in southeast Houston on a beautiful 524-acre campus, UHCL serves more than 9,000 freshman, transfer and graduate students. UHCL offers more than 90 undergraduate and graduate degree programs and three doctoral programs from its four colleges, with an additional campus in Pearland and an instructional site at the Texas Medical Center. More than 70,000 alumni are leaders in their fields and include CEOs, scientists, artists, astronauts and more.

University of Houston–Downtown Located in the heart of Houston, UHD educates more than 14,000 students annually and has an alumni base of over 51,000. Graduates emerge from the institution prepared to serve as leaders in law enforcement, business, science, education, nonprofit management, the arts and other industries.

Current students benefit from its convenient campus (accessible by light rail and from the city’s Bayou Greenways) and curriculum delivering real-world learning experiences. In recent years, UHD’s economic impact to the region totaled $2 billion. With a growing campus—including the new College of Sciences & Technology Building—and bolstered graduation rates, that sum should continue to grow as UHD approaches its 50th year of serving Houstonians. <8>

University of Houstonâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;Victoria UHV offers more than 80 academic programs to students living in the Gulf Coast region and beyond.

A new instructional site in Katy and a highly ranked distance education program expand UHVâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s educational outreach. The Victoria campus continues to grow with a new student center and library that opened in fall 2019, and a STEM building and residence hall set to open in fall 2020. UHV is a member of the Houston Guided Pathways to Success initiative to increase higher education completion rates.
