The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa offers five ways to finance your college education:

1. RESIDENCY

manoa.hawaii.edu/admissions/financing/residency.html As a public institution, the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa determines tuition rates based upon a student’s residency status. For the purposes of this document, type of residency is defined as follows: Resident: WUE: Non-Resident:

Resident of the state of Hawai‘i Resident of a WUE state or territory (see: #2 Western Undergraduate Exchange Tuition Reduction) Resident from a location outside of the state of Hawai‘i or a WUE state or territory

2. WESTERN UNDERGRADUATE EXCHANGE (WUE) TUITION REDUCTION manoa.hawaii.edu/admissions/undergrad/financing/wue.html The Western Undergraduate Exchange program is for qualified first time undergraduate degree seeking students who have legal residency in AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, ND, NM, NV, OR, SD, UT, WA, WY, CNMI, Guam, or RMI. The WUE tuition rate is 150% of the University’s in-state tuition rate. For WUE consideration, eligible applicants must complete an Admissions Application in its entirety.

5. LOANS

Loans are a form of financial aid that is borrowed to help pay for educational expenses. Loans must be repaid, usually with interest.

1) Federal Direct Loan Direct loans are low-interest loans for students to help pay for the cost of a student’s education after high school. The lender is the U.S. Department of Education rather than a bank or financial institution. Eligibility is determined by filling out your FAFSA. • Subsidized & Unsubsidized 2) Federal Direct PLUS Federal Direct PLUS Loans are federal loans that graduate or parents of dependent undergraduate students can use to help pay for the cost of a student’s education after high school. The lender is the U.S. Department of Education rather than a bank or financial institution. Eligibility is determined by filling out your FAFSA. 3) State Higher Education Loan The State Higher Education Loan (SHEL) is awarded to Hawai‘i resident undergraduate and graduate students with financial need. We may offer you a SHEL loan as part of your financial aid package. The funds available for the SHEL loan is limited, so not all aid applicants can be offered SHEL loans. Must be enrolled at least half-time in an eligible degree-seeking program.

6. GRANTS
