In traditional times, M anoa valley was expertly cared for and cultivated by Native Hawaiians. In return, it provided an abundance of sustenance and protection for its residents. Today, M anoa continues to furnish the resources that enable our institution to be a thriving land-, sea-, space-, and sun- grant university. In keeping with the Native Hawaiian manner of reciprocity, these blessings are passed on to you in the form of academic excellence so that you are equipped to take care of yourself, humanity, Hawai‘i, and the world.

There are two mountain ranges on O‘ahu: Ko‘olau and Wai‘anae Mountains Native Hawaiians lived in Hawai‘i for over one hundred generations with various island kingdoms. In 1810, Kamehameha I united all the islands under a single Hawaiian Kingdom. Duke Kahanamoku was a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) and a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming. He was also the world’s best known surfer, and set the standards of modern day surfing. ‘Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the U.S. and had electricity five years before the White House, and 17 years before Buckingham Palace. Each moku (district) was divided into ahupua‘a (wedge shaped land division extending from mountain to sea), a total of 80 on O‘ahu. Secondary World Languages College of Education With more than 30 years of teaching Hawaiian language and developing programs in public and charter schools throughout the state of Hawai‘i, Dr. Okamura’s teaching is rooted in place-based learning. “In Hawaiian we say, “Auamo ke kuleana” or to carry your responsibility. As Hawaiian language kumu (teacher), it is our kuleana (responsibility) to perpetuate the language and culture. The best way to do this is by standing on the shoulders of the cultural giants and icons, who came before us. Through their selfless examples of Aloha, we are equipped to inspire and educate the next generation of Hawaiian language learners.” She earned the 2021 SWCOLT Excellence in Teaching Post-Secondary Award.

University of Hawaii at Mānoa Admissions Cover
Pictured on the cover is Kōnāhuanui, the highest peak in Mānoa Valley. Rising 3,150 feet in elevation, Kōnāhuanui is a mountain and major water source for the surrounding four ahupua‘a (land division) including Honolulu, Waikīkī, Kailua, and Kāne‘ohe. Kōnāhuanui is also the home of a kupua wahine (supernatural woman) who is noted in moʻolelo (story) as an observer of travelers and protector of the mountain. In another mo'olelo, Kōnāhuanui is also known as the peak that Kawelomahamahaʻia (from Kauaʻi) stood upon to throw the ʻōʻō stick (a tool, a ground breaking stick) that created the land of Kūkaʻōʻō, location of Mānoa’s famous Kukaʻōʻō Heiau, the last intact heiau (ancient temple) in Mānoa. A special mahalo to UH Athletics, UH News, UH Alumni, Native Hawaiian Place of Learning Advancement Office, Ka Leo O Hawai‘i, Jose Magno, Leslie Dam, Nolan Omura, UH Mānoa Bookstore, Cameron Brooks, and our UH Mānoa Rainbow Warrior students for their image contributions.
