The Month That Was: May New Zealand Music Month at the Library was a hit! Body Beats with Angie Gooch To celebrate New Zealand Music Month the library hosted a ‘Body Beats’ session with Angie Gooch. Twenty brave people turned up for the body drumming session where they used their bodies to create a group percussion piece. The group were soon doing all sorts of physical movements including stomping, clapping, thigh slapping and finger clicking. They then built this back into one awesome percussion piece.
Drumming is a very effective immune booster and stress reducer. It’s cognitively beneficial and challenging and most of all it is fun. Creating an orchestra of sounds with your own body is an amazing experience and if you ever get an opportunity to give it a try, we highly recommend it.

By the end of the session not only had they all had a great work out but they had also managed to achieve a group percussion piece with five varying beats.
Upper Hutt Ukes Country Concert The Upper Hutt Ukes group got behind New Zealand Music Month with a concert in the Library. The event was a great success, with the group performing several country music songs telling stories of love and woe. A special thanks to Gary Cleavers for all his hardwork putting the concert together. Also thank you to Upper Hutt College and Upper Hutt Country Music Club for contributing & making New Zealand Music Month such a success!
Congratulations Reid! Reid Perkins, our Community Heritage Coordinator, has been recognised for all his hard work and commitment to the Library and Upper Hutt Heritage. In May he was presented with a Pride of Workmanship Award by the Rotary Club of Upper Hutt. Reid is a valued member of the Library team. He is dedicated to preserving Upper Hutt’s heritage and though not born and bred in Upper Hutt, has become an expert on the history of the area. 5

Coding Volunteers Needed The Coding Club provides projects for our volunteers to teach 9-12 year olds how to make their own computer games, animations and websites after school. The Upper Hutt City Library is planning to offer a Coding Club in Term 3. We have a volunteer who will lead the club, however we need more volunteers to assist these children. The Club will be run on either Wednesday or Sunday afternoons for one hour depending on volunteers and demand.

The Migrant Ship “Blenheim” & Upper Hutt Preparations are currently underway to mark the 175th anniversary of the arrival of the migrant ship “Blenheim” in Wellington Harbour in 1840. The “Blenheim” has a strong connection with the founding of Upper Hutt. That’s because one of its passengers was James Brown, the first European to settle in what later became Upper Hutt township. Brown, a former weaver, had emigrated from Paisley with his wife Mary and four children. The family first settled in Belmont but Brown later managed to acquire land in the Upper Hutt valley. Where, in 1846, he established a farm and then a hotel which became an important resting point for travellers journeying to the Wairarapa. When the railway line eventually went through in 1876, the local station was CENTRAL LIBRARY HOURS

established near Brown’s hotel, the Criterion. This then became the centre of Upper Hutt’s business district. When, in the early 1900s, the now prosperous Brown family subdivided their farmland, they named one of the newly created streets Blenheim Street in memory of the ship that had originally brought them to New Zealand.
