Be. Accessible is a social change initiative with a mission to create a truly accessible country for all New Zealanders. This charitable trust recently audited the Central Library to see how accessible the building is for people with disabilities and access needs (such as parents with prams) and awarded it a Gold status. Central Library was deemed to have an excellent level of accessibility in all the areas that were assessed, such as physical space, website, promotional material, route to/from the building, car parks, customer service and signage. With 24% of the New Zealand population living with a disability and an ageing population, issues around accessibility are on the rise. Central Library was the first organisation in Upper Hutt to go through a Be. Accessible audit and is now listed on the Be. Accessible website which is widely used in disability circles: www.beaccessible.org.nz/find/play/libraries/upper-hutt-city-library

LIBR ARY INSIGHTS: NONFICTION All our nonfiction (factual, true) books are assigned a Call Number from 000.000 to 999.999 according to what they are about. If two books have the same Call Number, you can differentiate them according to the first three letters of the author’s surname. Our Nonfiction Collection is divided up into areas called ‘Living Rooms’ which are designed to keep books on similar topics together. There are nine Living Rooms in the library:
BIO General
Health and Wellbeing
Biography
Military and Transport
Countries
Home and Garden
Parenting

Let’s say you want to borrow The Free Range Cook by Annabel Langbein. You look on our online catalogue to find if it’s available for borrowing and you get this information: To find this book on the shelf (its Status will be On Loan if already borrowed) you need to look at the Library it is in, its Call Number and its Shelf Location (the Living Room where it can be found). Now you can go to the correct Living Room to look for the book. Check the blue signs on the ends of the book shelves to know where to go. Look at the book's spine and find the Call Number you are after.
Always ask a librarian for help if you have any difficulty finding the book you want. We are here to assist you! W W W. U P P E R H U T T L I B R A R Y. C O . N Z
