Now, as we settle into our wonderful new pop-up space, we again have room and time to breathe, and return to improving on our long-term services. New Idea: New Idea was on our shelves a few years ago, before turning into an Australian publication. Multiple requests have lead to its return. InStyle: For fans of Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire. Natural Parent: Kind of like a cross between Little Treasures and Good.
Australian Geographic: National Geographic and NZ Geographic are extremely popular, so we're giving this cobber a whirl as well. Edge: Covering handheld, PC and console gaming for young and old. SFX: Like Empire but with a harder sci-fi/fantasy bent. And often the cover design obscures the bottom of the 'F'... always amusing. Britain: For our many readers who enjoy This England. 6

M I R AN DA S EN I O R LI B R AR IAN R E ADE R DEVE LO P M ENT My favourite books to read are fantasy stories with a bit of humour in them, although I do read other genres as well. I love watching all types of DVDs, and I am a keen user of the audiobook collection. Some of my favourite authors are Terry Pratchett, Jim Butcher, Darynda Jones, David Eddings, Tamora Pierce, Dean Koontz and Dick Francis. In The cuckoo’s calling by Robert Galbraith (aka J. K. Rowling), war veteran Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John walks through his door; his sister, supermodel Lula Landry, known as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. But was it really suicide?
Darynda Jones wanted her heroine in First grave on the right to be part Stephanie Plum, part Buffy the Vampire Slayer and part Lorelai Gilmore – and I think she succeeded brilliantly. Charley is a part-time detective, full-time Grim Reaper – it’s her job to guide the departed ‘into the light’. But when people have departed in less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), it’s up to Charlie to bring the bad guys to justice. The greatest showman is a funfilled movie (loosely based on the life of P. T. Barnum) with wonderful music and dancing. Look out for the song ‘This is me’ sung by talented Kiwi Keala Settle.

H E R I TAGE C O L L EC T I O NS It’s always great to see people including images from our Heritage Collections in their publications and one new example that we’re particularly excited about is Howard Weddell’s Trentham Camp and Upper Hutt’s Untold Military History, which is published this month. This excellent addition to books about our local history makes extensive use of archival material held by the Library including maps and photographs. It tells the story of the past 200 years of military activities and their social impact on our district, from conflict between Māori in the 1820s, through to the establishment of Trentham Camp and other bases here during the First and Second World Wars, right up to the present when Upper Hutt remains an important part of this country’s military.
