Celebrate Te Tiriti o Waitangi with Upper Hutt City Library
Welcome Waiata 1—5 and 22-26 February, 10am Staff welcome you into the library with waiata accompanied by ukuleles. Māwai Hakona Exhibition Thursday 4 February—Thursday 31 March Heritage Wall Māwai Hakona were an internationally recognised Māori cultural performance group based in Upper Hutt, active from the 1960s onwards. They also played a central role in establishing Ōrongomai Marae. An admirably inclusive group, Māwai Hakona celebrated the spirit of cultural partnership embodied in the Treaty of Waitangi. Alongside historic photographs of the group performing, the Library’s exhibition also features original costumes and an audio-visual display. Jock McEwen, a Founding Father of Māwai Hakona and Ōrongomai: an illustrated talk by Mary McEwen Friday 19 February, 6pm Rotary Lounge Upper Hutt local Jock McEwen was a hugely respected authority on Māori and Pacific Island cultural matters. Mary McEwen, whose biography of Jock is due to be published later this year, will speak about his life, including his active

As part of our Waitangi Day celebrations, the Library Heritage Wall features a display celebrating M āwai Hakona, Upper Hutt’s famous M āori cultural performance group. Founded in 1962, the club achieved major success at national competitions. They recorded LPs, appeared on TV, and performed throughout the world, including for the Queen at the opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973. Our exhibition features photographs, original costumes and audio recordings.
