This year is going to bring its own changes (including a bit of a newsletter refresh!) as we prepare for a move back into the Central Library building, and your representatives continue to explore the option of moving into Main Street in the future (see page 4 for more details).

Any Questions is a website that lets children chat to a real librarian somewhere in New Zealand, who can help them find information for their school work! Any Questions is open from 1pm - 6pm weekdays during the school term.

To chat to a librarian visit: anyquestions.govt.nz Any Questions won't answer questions for people, but will guide them to websites and resources where they can find answers.

While waiting for a reply you can browse their 'Many Answers' pages which have information on popular homework topics, sorted into year levels.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the Library back to full-capacity at the newly upgraded space,” says Council’s Chief Executive, Peter Kelly. ”I want to commend our library staff who have been extremely dedicated to [Library] services” ... Council is also exploring the option of relocating the Central Library in the future, to Main Street.

Relocating to Main Street will increase foot traffic around Upper Hutt’s city centre retail precinct and contribute to the revitalisation of the area. There may be an opportunity to trial a location in Main Street later in 2019, but from late-February/earlyMarch Council will have its current library facility available for use, so the decision to move back has been made. This will enable the library to restore its full services and save ratepayer money on renting a ‘popup’ space elsewhere.

Another upcoming resilience project will be the strengthening of Council’s Civic Centre building. This building is not under the same time-pressure as the Central Library was, and a trial move of the Central Library to Main Street, may afford Council some office space in the newly upgraded building while work on the Civic Centre takes place. https://upperhuttcity.com/2018/12/20/upperhutts-central-library-building-ready-forreoccupation-by-early-march-2019/ 4

At this time of year a lot of us are looking at ways we can simplify.

Here are some of the books I turn to: I have read The Capsule Wardrobe by Wendy Mak several times. It works on the principle that you only have 30 core items of clothes that you can mix and match to create a ton of different looks. The best part of this book is that it comes with a link to download and print a PDF of the 30 pieces, so you can refer to it when you’re at the shops!

Interest has been rekindled for anything Marie Kondo with her new Netflix show, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. I love The Life-Changing Manga of Tidying 6

Up: A Magical Story because it has lots of pictures and a cute little storyline to follow along with.

Whether you take on one little nugget or overhaul your entire home I think there is something for everyone in this book.

My favourite kind of eating (especially in summer) is deconstructed bowls.

The photos in 100 Weight Loss Bowls

by Heather Whinney are really appetising and it gives good basic information about what should go in an ideal meal – the percentage breakdown of protein, carbs and fats. A bonus is that the recipes are all ingredients that aren’t too expensive – something that often turns me off other cookbooks.

C H I LD R EN ' S & TEEN S Kia ora koutou, Another year is upon us and we've been busy rejigging our children’s programmes to make sure we are offering the best for you and your tamariki.

Last year I was fortunate to attend a ‘Mother Goose on the Loose’ training session on how to transform preschool sessions. It gave us all some valuable insights that we are excited to use.

What is the aim of a preschool session at the library?

- To get your little one best prepared for school! Basic concepts like sitting and listening to a story or instructions (and for some little darlings, just sitting) are valuable skills that kids need from day one of school.

- Learning a vast range of language.

The more words a child is exposed to the easier they will find sounding out syllables and eventually writing these sounds down.

- And importantly... to have fun! We provide key learnings in a fresh, fun way that will keep you coming back week after week.

Don’t forget, children learn best with the ones they love, so put your phone down and join in as enthusiastically as you can. Trust me, no baby or toddler has ever thought their carer was a bad singer!
