We are often asked " When will I be able to use the Library again?". The answer is, right now! Issuing items (books, DVDs, magazines, other items) A selection of new and popular books is available on the Mobile Library, and our lovely Pinehaven branch has had its hours extended. If you want a specific book or item please make use of our current free holds offer. For more information about this service please see page 6. Public computers, printing and internet access Computer and internet (including WiFi) access is available in our CBD Tower location, as well as black and white printing - colour printing and scanning services are on hold.

LIBR A RY CLOSUR E: P OP- UP LIBR A RY C ONFIRMED
We are very pleased to let you know that a temporary (pop-up) Library will be opening at: Level 1, CBD Towers, 84-90 Main Street, Upper Hutt on Thursday 26 April The new space is 430 square metres, which will allow approximately 30% of stock - with a focus on new and popular items - held in the Central Library to be made available for you to browse and issue. We will continue to offer free holds for items remaining in the Central Library building. As well as providing books, DVDs, magazines and other collections the pop-up Library will offer free computer, internet and WiFi access. The new space will allow Pinehaven Library to return to its regular hours, and the Mobile Library to resume its important services to schools and rest homes around Upper Hutt.

LIBR A RY CLOSUR E: QUEST IONS & A NSW ERS
As you may be aware, in February this year a new assessment of the Central Library building was received, which designated the building as earthquake prone. The decision was made to close the building immediately rather than put the public and staff in danger. This decision has had an impact on our services. Understandably we've had a lot of questions from the public about the closure, so we hope that this FAQ will help answer some of these questions and give you more insight into the situation. Please be aware that all information is subject to change. For this reason we encourage you to follow our Library website blog at: upperhuttlibrary.co.nz/latest-news/ or our social media feeds on Facebook and Twitter, where we can share updates immediately. Why did we find out about the earthquake prone status of the building so late? It’s been ages since the Kaikōura earthquake. Over the last seven years New Zealand’s significant seismic events have given rise to continued advances in seismic engineering and standards relating to the seismic performance of buildings. Following the Kaikōura earthquake, Council sought a review of prior assessments. The review highlighted the need for more detailed structural assessments. A draft of the detailed assessment was received prior to Christmas 2017 and confirmed in early February 2018. How long will the Central Library building be closed for? We don't know. Engineers, architects and contractors are involved in assessing the situation, and will then provide an estimate of how long the necessary work will take to carry out. Why did it take so long to find a temporary space? The first step after the Central Library building closed was to look at how we could deliver our most important services and allow you to access your books with as little delay as possible. This involved immediately rescheduling the Library bus so it could be available behind the Central Library during the week, extending Pinehaven hours, and making holds and computer access available in the CBD Towers. Each one of these changes has a string of ongoing planning and work attached rescheduling, informing and training staff, installing necessary computers and networks, transporting huge amounts of books, health and safety assessments, and keeping the public informed. Setting up a temporary Library is an even bigger shift that hasn't been taken lightly. The location has to (or be refurbished to) include all of the necessary infrastructure, be available and affordable, and be assessed for earthquake and safety risks and maximum capacity. We are very happy to have found a suitable home for our pop-up Library on Level 1, CBD Towers. How have staff been affected by the building closure? It's been hard work. We miss our books and the buzz of our lovely Central Library when it's busy, and are looking forward to the pop-up space. However all permanent staff are back at work and becoming accustomed to our new routines, and have been enjoying being able to deliver more and more services. Your support keeps us going!

E V E R Y T H I NG A BO U T HO L DS The Central Library building is closed, but did you know that you still have access to every item in the building? Until we open our temporary pop-up Library (on 26 April) we are removing the usual $1 fee on holds, so this is a perfect time to try out this great service. What are holds? If you place a hold on any item in our catalogue (including books, CDs, DVDs, magazines etc) we receive an alert as soon as that item is available, put it aside to 'hold' it for you, and let you know it's available. Why would I place a hold? Holds are often placed on popular books which are in high demand - a new title by a popular author will often have a long queue of holds. When you place a hold you can tell us where you would like to pick up the item, so if you want to issue a book that's currently on the shelf in Pinehaven, but you want to pick it up from the Mobile Library (for instance), holds are the way to do it. Currently the main reason for placing holds is that it's the only way to access items in the Central Library building. How much does it cost? Normally holds cost $1 per item, although there is no charge for teen and children's items (note that this is based on what collection the item is in, not the age of the borrower). We are offering free holds until 26 April. Anything else? If any item has more than 5 holds, its lending period is reduced from four to two weeks. You have 10 days to pick up a hold before it is cancelled. Sounds great. How do I place a hold? 1. Go to our website at upperhuttcitylibrary.co.nz and log in to your account by clicking on the 'My Account' button at the top of the page. 2. Enter your Card Number and your PIN (password). If you have forgotten your PIN you can come to a branch or visit upperhuttlibrary.co.nz/get-pinpassword/ to request a new one. 6

3. After clicking 'Log in' you will be redirected to our catalogue, or visit: ent.kotui.org.nz/client/en_ AU/upperhutt Search for an item by typing the title, topic or author into the search bar at the top of the page, and hitting 'Search'.

4. The page will now display your search results. You can filter these results by using the options on the left and right of the screen. Once you have found the item you're looking for, click 'Place Hold'.

5. Select what location you would like to pick your book up from (please note that the 'Upper Hutt Library' location for holds is currently Level 6, CBD Towers), and press 'Place Hold(s)'.

6. You have now placed a hold, and will be informed once your item is ready for pick-up. You can check your holds list, and suspend or cancel your holds, by going to My Account > Holds on the catalogue. For further assistance with holds speak to a librarian

H E R I TAGE C O L L EC T I O NS Like the rest of the Library staff the Heritage team has been saddened by the temporary closure of our Library building. It’s been a shame to lose, for the time being, the use of our Heritage cabinet and display wall, as well as the special kind of access to our community that the Library afforded. Aside from that, however, it’s been pretty much business as usual. Both Reid and Tracey have re-located to home offices where they’ve been able to continue processing and digitizing new material and uploading this to our Recollect website. Major new acquisitions we’ve been working on include valuable 19th century baptismal and burial registers for St John’s, Trentham, and a substantial collection of Girl Guides records for our local area dating back to the 1940s. Since our archives are kept in a storeroom separate from the main Library building these physical records remain accessible and can still be viewed by appointment in the Council Admin building. And we continue to organize community heritage presentations and displays that will be held at various locations over the coming months.
