Under normal circumstances, giving birth to twin girls on December 24th would be the perfect early Christmas gift for first-time parents...
...but Callie and Cayden Reid were born prematurely at 27 weeks and spent the first four months of their lives in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kingston General Hospital. “I broke down in tears,” said the twins’ mother, Stephanie, “all I could think was, do babies even survive at 27 weeks?” Continued on page 6...

$65M CAMPAIGN IS ABOUT THE CARE YOU DESERVE Kingston’s hospitals have a vision for the future, and our community has a key role to play. We all have the opportunity to be extraordinary, helping ensure our friends and family have access to the best quality, innovative health care On October 2, Campaign Chair Susan Creasy announced UHKF’s second major fundraising campaign—a $65-million initiative to benefit Kingston General Hospital (KGH), Hotel Dieu Hospital and Providence Care.
AREAS OF FOCUS:
“This campaign lays the groundwork for our the next major wave of redevelopment,” Susan said. At the time of the launch, $35.5 million had been secured. Today, with the incredible support of donors like you, that figure is in excess of $39 million!

Several projects included in the campaign have been fully funded, including: • $6 million for purchase and installation of a second magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine at KGH; • Phase One of the W.J. Henderson Centre for Patient-Oriented Research; • Expansion of eye clinic space at Hotel Dieu;

Miracles, from page 1... “Their hands looked just like adult hands, scaled down,” added the babies’ father, Joe Reid. “They had wrinkles on their knuckles and everything, but the whole thing was the size of a thumbnail.” After spending a few precious moments with their parents in the delivery room, Cayden and Callie were whisked to the NICU where they were hooked up to special live-giving technology to help them breathe and to measure their vital signs.

Callie and Cayden each needed support from ventilators to help them breathe.
The NICU is almost always home to at least 15 babies in need of care, and staff members need access to specialized tools and equipment for these tiny patients. Government funding alone cannot supply all the equipment needed, so the NICU also depends on the generosity of community donors to fund lifesaving equipment.
Stephanie and Joe are happy to have their girls home after four months in the NICU at KGH.

HOSPITAL STAFF AND FAMILIES SHOW THEY CARE We Walk For Your Comfort and Care raises more than $32,000 for special funds. You don’t have to look far to find staff members in our health care organizations who take extra steps to help their patients, clients and residents. On Oct. 3, they did this quite literally through participation in the first-ever joint hospitals fundraising event organized by UHKF. More than 100 staff members collected pledges and took part in the We Walk for Your Comfort and Care, raising more than $32,000. These funds are shared between the organizations and are to be used to support people who are facing extra financial stresses due to their health care needs.

“IT WAS GREAT TO GET HOME” After spending four months at KGH, David Simpson was able to return home, with a little extra support All David Simpson needed to get home after a partial amputation of his leg due to complications from diabetes, was the final $1,300 needed to have a ramp constructed at his home. Without a ramp, there was no way he could be discharged. In the days following the We Walk event, a social worker at KGH connected him with a special patient support fund – the same type of fund that We Walk supported! In the next week, David was making plans to return to his home of 33 years. He’s now home with his family. “Relief,” is what he says he felt, thanks to the special fund that enabled him to return home. “It was great to get home.
