Thanks to the support of our communities, the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at Kingston General Hospital was redeveloped and expanded through our first major phase of redevelopment.

But our care providers know more can be done to ensure faster, accurate diagnoses and to deliver innovative treatment and care.

The last wave of redevelopment has resulted in the delivery of new programs such as high-dose radiation through brachytherapy, the recruitment of three new dermatology specialists resulting the renewal of a full skin cancer program, and much more.

ENJOYING A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE WITH CHRONIC CONDITIONS The residents of southeastern Ontario who come to the academic health sciences centres in Kingston for care have a higher than average incidence of many serious health issues than those from other parts of the province.

Our region - which covers some 20,000 square kilometres - has the highest average age in the province, with more than 20 per cent of our population over age 65. Our residents have more chronic disease and a higher incidence of lifestyle factors that adversley affect their health.

Diabetes, mobility problems, obesity, and breathing disorders are among some of the leading challenges faced by our patients. Our approach to care includes a strong focus on innovation in ambulatory, short-stay and day services to meet the growing needs of our residents.

AN INVESTMENT IN QUALITY OF LIFE.

Retired Ontario Provincial Police Officer Alan Lusk of Bancroft understands what it is like to live with chronic pain. When he was 29, he was assisting another officer at the side of Hwy. 401 in Toronto when he was struck by a car. "I vaguely heard somebody yelling something, and then I woke up lying on the highway," he recalls.

Alan's body was thrown into a parked car with such force that his legs were imprinted on the fender. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and spent the next month in intensive care. After a long recovery, he returned to work, retiring at age 50.

As the years go by, the lingering effects of the accident have grown worse. Alan is grateful for the newly-expanded pain clinic at Hotel Dieu, where he receives a special treatment that greatly reduces his pain every six weeks.

LEADING EYE CARE. Our plans call for the construction of new Ophthalmology procedure suites within the Jeanne Mance 6 eye clinic area at Hotel Dieu Hospital. This will allow us to move cataract surgery from traditional operating rooms to a clinic environment, providing a better care experience for eye patients and freeing up surgical room capacity for other surgical programs. Our goal is also to move the emergency eye clinics held on Mary Alice 1 to the sixth floor, to an environment that is brighter and more accessible for our patients.

INNOVATION WITH AMBULATORY CARE As one of Canada's leading providers of ambulatory (outpatient) care and day surgeries, Hotel Dieu Hospital has the opportunity to become a showcase organization for innovative approaches to care.

This type of care is less invasive and more focused on lifelong wellness and managing chronic disease than care that may be typically available in hospital.

We know that having the right kind of care environment is key to achieving this potential.

A HEALTHIER LIFE Surgical suite renovations at Hotel Dieu Hospital are enabling the delivery of new programs. Most recently, the hospital began offering weight reduction surgery through its new Bariatric Centre of Excellence. That means patients like Skotti no longer have to travel to Ottawa or Toronto to receive their life-changing care.

QUALITY OF LIFE Improvements are coming to the Children's Outpatient Centre (COPC) at Hotel Dieu, which is the primary access point for urgent care for children and youth. It is also the location of specialty clinics for children with cystic fibrosis and other serious illnesses. Renewed facilities will result in better infection control and space that is designed to meet the needs of area children and youth.

FASTER, ACCURATE DIAGNOSES Quality patient care involves timely access to reliable information. Our plans involve significant improvement to the diagnostic areas at Hotel Dieu Hospital (imaging services) and to the laboratories at Kingston General Hospital (KGH).

The labs at KGH are currently located on five different levels of a building which is over 50 years old. Lab technologists and pathologists function in overcrowded facilities. Every day, they make decisions about how to work around the limitations of the space.

Despite this, our lab team is commited to ensuring the accurate, timely delivery of diagnostic information for every patient.

They have a vision that, one day, they will have the facilities and equipment to support a “personalized medicine� model, where custom treatment plans can be developed for each patient based on their specific genetic makeup or response to therapies.

Realizing our vision for the labs will require a complete reconstruction of the entire lab facility, in a new tower to be constructed on the KGH site.

In fact, the footprint of our labs will grow by 54 per cent. This new space will provide a safer environment for our team, and room for state-ofthe-art equipment.

These improvements are critical for labs that produce more than 5 million tests every year not only for the Kingston hospitals, but for hospitals across our region as well.

In fact, KGH is the only reference lab testing facility between Ottawa and Toronto.

A SECOND MRI We are thrilled to acknowledge that one of the early projects of this wave of redevelopment (the $6-million purchase and installation of a second MRI at Kingston General Hospital) has been fully funded! This will help reduce wait times for some of the most complex scans needed by people from across southeastern Ontario.

QUALITY OF LIFE Hotel Dieu Hospital conducts more than 80,000 imaging procedures annually, of which about 45,000 are of Kingston residents. Minor renovations are also needed to support new technology and a better configuration of staffing for the area. There are a multitude of major and minor equipment purchases that will go along with this upgrade, which will be funded exclusively through community donations.

“I was told that a human being couldn’t live through this much trauma,” says Margaret, who waited outside the room in the Emergency Department as the care team did everything they could to get her husband, Martin’s, heart beating for the fourth time.

After traditional methods didn’t work, Dr. Adam Szulewski and his senior resident Dr. Colin Bell decided to take a more innovative approach. They asked a nurse to get a second defibrillator as they prepared for a procedure that had never been performed in the Kingston hospitals.

The double-shock worked. Martin was transferred to the catheterization laboratory where a large clot was removed from his coronary artery.

Just four weeks after his heart attack, Martin walked his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day. It was a moment he will never forget. It was made possible by the exceptional quality of care here and the generosity of donors like you.

“Thank God we live in Kingston and have a hospital with fresh minds,” said Martin.

KGH EMERGENCY TOD A Y

When moments matter, Kingston General Hospital’s Emergency Department is there for the most critically ill or injured people from across Southeastern Ontario.

The department is aimed at caring for patients who are very ill and in need of specialty services. This scope of care requires larger, private spaces for each patient, able to accommodate the range of specialized equipment that caregivers need for medically unstable patients.

At KGH, relocating the department to an area where drive-through access is available for ambulances will also improve traffic flow and overall safety for patients and the public.

Current labour and delivery facilities at KGH do not accommodate modern models of practice which emphasize the role of family in the birthing experience. As the high risk birthing centre for Southeastern Ontario, we need better space for specialized delivery teams, as well as more space for those who are supporting the new mom.

Our vision is to provide families with a larger, more personalized birthing environment and access to all of the amenities today's new mom may expect. Our labour and delivery area will grow by 64 per cent, providing more private rooms featuring more delivery and family resources.

Kingston is fortunate to have access to the highest level of neonatal care right here at KGH. That means most fragile infants from our region don't need to be moved to an area such as Ottawa or Toronto for care. But our dated unit needs to grow by about 320% to meet today's standards for care.

Within our plan to redevelop facilities at KGH is a vision to build an new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit adjacent to our delivery area, with separate rooms for each baby, well-appointed with the equipment and furnishings needed to give baby and parents the best possible start at life.

You may have heard the Kingston hospitals offer the services of a specialty children's hospital within our existing hospitals.

COPC TODAY

At Hotel Dieu, the Children's Outpatient Centre (COPC) is the primary access point for urgent care for children and youth, and the location of specialty clinics for children with cystic fibrosis and other serious illnesses.

Much of the space currently being used for patient care in the COPC was originally designed for office space.

Redevelopment of this area will help improve infection control, privacy and confidentiality.

Better patient flow will result in improved access to care for these young patients and their families.

A NEW HOME FOR PROVIDENCE MANOR Today, more than 86 per cent of the Manor's residents have some form of dementia or cognitive impairment. A new home will provide residents with better space in a living environment designed to meet their needs. Not only will a new design ensure a more accessible, safer place to live, but a new facility will result in improved efficiency.

Providence Manor is home to 243 people, a place where dedicated, caring staff and volunteers are focused on compassion, respect and dignity. But the facilities are outdated and the electrical system is limited. As an example, resident rooms have two electrical outlets, but they need these outlets for electrical lifts, beds and air mattresses, let alone personal devices such as a clock, lamp, computer or radio.

New space will offer a quieter environment providing residents with increased privacy. It will be designed to reduce the distance residents need to travel to access supports and services, and will feature better access to outdoor spaces and more parking for visitors.

Residents have excellent access to high quality medical care thanks to an innovative partnership with Queen's University.

Combined with quality day-to-day care provided by personal support workers, nurses and many others, this partnership has resulted in initiatives to reduce Emergency Room visits, better support for residents with dementia, and provision of respite support to families caring for loved ones at home.

KGH OR TOD A Y We will construct eight new operating suites at Kingston General Hospital and refurbish two existing operating suites that cannot be used at present at Hotel Dieu Hospital.

Last year, more than 7,200 surgeries were performed in the six operating rooms at Hotel Dieu. There are an additional two rooms that with a major renovation can be added to the complement of suites available for day surgeries and short-stay procedures such as hip and knee replacements, and bariatric surgery.

New surgical suites at KGH will provide a better environment for our surgical teams, as there will be more space provided for movement around the patient. The current footprint of surgical space at KGH is expected to grow by 26 per cent to meet the needs of today's technology.

As the centre that provides the most complex surgical care for our region, new operating suites at KGH are essential. The current suites were constructed in the 1950s, long before most of the technology used in operating theatres today was developed.

On average, there are more than 9,000 surgeries at KGH every year, with more than 40% categorized as emergencies.

Between KGH and Hotel Dieu, close to 1,200 cancer surgeries happen annually.

The new suites at KGH would be built in a new tower in the middle of the health sciences complex. Each suite will feature 16-foot ceilings to accommodate instrumentation booms which hang from the ceiling.
