If you are planning to make a deferred gift in support of our hospitals, we would like to be able to express our gratitude to you today.

What does is that we’re able to thank you for your thoughtfulness by placing a leaf on our Evergreen Tree. This special tree is a place where those who have made a gift in their Will can be honoured while they are still living.

As with all of UHKF’s recognition programs, donors have a choice as to whether they wish to be recognized publicly.

Whatever you decide to give, and however you decide to structure the gift, the most important thing is to feel good about doing it.

Learn more about what may be Kingston’s best kept secret...

One of our UHKF donors inspired me to seek more information about care of the elderly in our community.

My quest led me to some exciting and innovative work that is taking shape right now!

I discovered a new program called Centre for Studies on Aging and Health at Providence Care (CSAH). It is led by senior researchers right here in Kingston who work in collaboration with their peers from across Canada.

CSAH links with organizations making a difference in the future of our aging population.

I spoke with Dr. John Puxty, who is a Gerontologist and CSAH Director, at Providence Care’s St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital site and Queen’s University. His primary interest is in promot-

ing healthy aging and effective care for seniors through his research on aging, chronic disease, knowledge mobilization and information technology. Dr. Puxty and other influential specialists have been the visionaries for the work they are doing both in research and knowledge sharing. What Dr. Puxty shared with me is their strategic vision which is in the midst of transformation and it has me extremely excited about what our future looks like for Kingston area’s aging population.

spent their final years at the 243-bed home. The awards are the Zelma Silver Bursary, The Sherwin Lunn Bursary, The Mancel Lunn Bursary and The Iva Speers Bursary.

It was Mrs. Speers’ desire that employees of Providence Manor have every opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge in order to preserve and enhance the quality of life for residents and clients of Providence Manor.

While UHKF holds the principle amount of the bequest in the Iva Speers Endowment, the earnings are used to fund the bursaries annually.

These bursaries have sup-

ported many staff members over the years. One example is a $450 award to cover registration for a spiritual health practitioner to attend a national conference of the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care. The applicant was hopeful the speakers would help grow her expertise in clinical counselling as she is one of the first people that new residents to Providence Manor encounter and she wants to provide them with the best care possible.

Another is a $1,500 award for a personal support worker who is upgrading her skills to become a registered practical nurse. While she studies,

she knows she will develop a more thorough understanding of the multi-level care needed by residents.

Born Iva Marion Lunn, Iva Speers was a loyal donor to the Kingston hospitals during her lifetime. She made small donations to Providence Care and Kingston General Hospital since 1986. She was a graduate of Queen’s University and St. Lawrence College. She is buried in Cataraqui Cemetery alongside her late husband, Dr. Elmore (Al) Clarence Speers, “one of Canada’s most promising geological scientists,” according to Queen’s University.
