After Ron Irvine had to travel for a procedure, he was inspired to ensure that no other patients like him would have to do the same.

Kingston is now home to southeastern Ontario’s only balloon enteroscope—a specialized piece of equipment which wasn’t available close to home when Ron needed it.

“I was obviously having hemorrhaging of some sort intestinally,” said Ron. Existing diagnostic technology in Kingston simply could not reach the troubled area.

So Ron was sent to Toronto

where he could access a test using the balloon enteroscope.

“I was fortunate to have my son drive me up and friends that I could stay with, but what about the people who can’t do that?” he asked.

“That is the real reason I made the donation—so others can avoid this nuisance.”

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR When you think about inspiration, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

Nothing inspires me more than hearing stories from people who are so grateful for their care in Kingston that they decide to make a difference by giving back.

It was a special treat for me to meet Mr. Ron Irvine (p.1), and to hear his story about ensuring better access to care locally. Ron knew that, for many patients, travelling can make an already stressful time of dealing with a health crisis, even worse. Together with generous support from Volunteer Services to Hotel Dieu Hospital, his donation toward a balloon enterscope means more people in our region can get the care they need, close to home.

Earlier this year, we shared Mackenzie Curran’s remarkable story of her stem cell treatment and recovery from cancer thanks to the expert care we have right here. Alan Lusk has also shared his story this summer of his experience with chronic pain. Alan gives back to the hospitals to say thank you for the care he receives right here in Kingston.

It’s truly inspiring to see our community working together for the future of health care. With the recent announcements of funding from the Ministry (p. 3) and the integration of Hotel Dieu Hospital and Kingston General Hospital, we are looking forward to exciting changes that bring the most innovative health care to you and your loved ones closer to home.

MINISTRY ANNOUNCEMENT FOR KGH We’ve reached an important milestone on the path to redevelopment... and space requirements. It describes departmental and service relationships and locations, and describes architectural and environmental conditions. It forms the basis for and an estimate of the operating and capital funding requirements necessary to carry out the project.

University Hospitals Kingston Foundation is pleased to share with our supporters and champions the exciting news that the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care has recently announced a planning grant for Kingston General Hospital (KGH).

The $2.5 million grant will be used to develop a Functional Program Submission for major hospital redevelopment projects proposed for KGH.

With this Ministry announcement, KGH will now be in a position to begin developing “a functional program submission” for all of these areas.

The development of this submission is a crucial milestone for KGH to pass in seeking Ministry approval and funding for these major building projects.

We are thrilled to have the Ministry’s support for this critical next step toward redeveloping facilities at KGH.

The W.J. Henderson Centre for Patient-Oriented Research will increase hospitalbased research space in the city by 25 per cent and earns KGH a position among the top research hospitals in the country.

Once completed in the summer of 2017, the W.J. Henderson Centre for PatientOriented Research will boast six modular research labs to be used by multiple research teams, facilities to carry out overnight patient studies and clinical trials, a biohazard Level 2 tissue preparation area and more.

More than 150 donors helped fund the newest research facility at Kingston General Hospital.

Construction of the $4.1-million W.J. Henderson Centre for Patient-Oriented Research began with a bang.

Donors who funded the project were invited to initiate the renovation of the space inside Kingston General Hospital (KGH) by taking to the walls with a sledgehammer.

First up to take a swing at the walls of the 9,000-square foot space located on Connell 4 at KGH was David Pattenden, a trustee of the W. J. Henderson Foundation, which pledged $1-million in support of the centre.

his physician, Dr. Lawrence Hookey, who introduced him to UHKF. Unbeknownst to Ron, Volunteer Services to Hotel Dieu Hospital had funds of their own which they were looking to donate back to the hospital.

“I know the importance of the equipment and I understand the need,” said Carol Hazell, president of Volunteer Services. “This is our purpose; this is why the volunteers are here – to supply the things that Hotel Dieu might not otherwise have.”

“The small balloon enteroscope allows us to go beyond where we ever could before,” explained Dr. Hookey, Medical Director of the Endoscopy Unit at Hotel Dieu.

“A number of patients, rather than making the trip to Toronto, choose to live with

their condition which is unfortunate,” added Dr. Hookey. “This equipment has been on our wish list for the last five to seven years.”

“I was delighted to do this,” said Ron. “I had a little extra money. Why not put it to good use? ” Ron was a chemist and head of the medical photography unit at Queen’s during his career. He’s worked with the GI department since the 60s and developed a fascination with endoscopy, presenting research on behalf of Queen’s across the globe at Biological Photographic Association meetings.

THE IMPACT OF YOUR GIFTS Because of the generous donations made by community members like you, caregivers at Kingston’s hospitals were able to purchase new equipment, initiate new and innovative research projects, and pursue specialized education. Here are just a few of the things that your donations made possible…

From FaceTime sessions with family members who live far away, to listening to music or watching movies in their first language, iPads have the potential to meet a variety of therapeutic needs for patients facing dementia at Providence Care. The Seniors Mental Health department has purchased three iPads to enhance patient comfort and even reduce stress in caregivers.

Many children hate the process of getting their temperature taken or blood pressure measured – it can be scary and uncomfortable. The Children’s Outpatient Centre at Hotel Dieu Hospital purchased Carescape Monitors which accurately measure blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels and temperature in just seconds, making the experience much quicker and much less scary for these young patients.

The new Indigenous healing room at Kingston General Hospital was furnished, decorated, and made accessible thanks to community donations.

This space on Connell 6 allows Indigenous patients and their families to perform cultural healing practices while in the hospital and enhancing spiritual well-being for patients.
