$6M now committed for second MRI at KGH Thank you to the 500 people who joined together to answer our call for a second Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine for Kingston General Hospital (KGH). Half of the funds needed for the $6-million project were secured when Brit Smith stepped forward with a $3-million gift shared between Homestead Land Holdings and the Britton Smith Foundation. Mr. Smith was moved when he learned that up to 1,000 people are waiting for an MRI at KGH at any given time. The current machine is the only one in southeastern Ontario where complex scans can be carried out. He was also pleased to learn about the incredible support that UHKF has received from close to 500 donors. “Hopefully this will help us see it operating sooner,” he said while making his pledge. “We have an exceptional quality of life in this community and having timely access to specialized care is a big part of that,” says Susan Creasy, — See MRI on page 4

Celebrating your extraordinary passion for better care Every day, we’re grateful for your incredible support. Once a year, we have an opportunity to welcome you to a Celebration of Giving where hospital leaders and care providers are able to express their thanks to you. This year, our event focused on the important difference that community members are making in the Kingston hospitals. In the past year, more than $10 million in donations was received. These precious funds help our hospitals purchase needed equipment, fund special programs, fuel research discoveries and assist staff in obtaining the latest education. In addition to the incredible achievements you have made together, UHKF was honoured to present three special awards to some very worthy recipients. The first was Jennifer Fisher, who received the Ian Wilson Award for Volunteerism in Philanthropy from Ian, UHKF Board Chair and Chair of the past Together We Can campaign. Jennifer is an excellent volunteer who has given in all ways possible to UHKF. She’s been a long-serving and hardworking member of the UHKF Board and has also served on two of the hospital foundation boards. As Treasurer of UHKF, she actively chaired the Finance and Resource Committee from its inception until the amalgamation in July 2014. Jennifer has provided invaluable advice to UHKF staff throughout the foundation’s 10-year history. Jennifer has participated in the entire spectrum of giving. She is a generous donor, and her company has given as well. Jennifer has opened many doors in the business community on behalf — See Celebration on page 8

Community outpouring of support for MRI MRI
— Continued from page 1 chair of UHKF’s upcoming campaign. “It is heartening to see how our community comes together to support local healthcare so we have the best care, right here.” Mr. Smith’s pledge is the largest-ever gift from an individual or business made in support of Kingston hospitals. It joins an outpouring of support from our community, such as two inspirational gifts of $100,000 that were announced in late June: one from the Lion’s Club of Kingston and the other from the radiologists in Kingston hospitals and Queen’s University. This was followed with a $50,000 pledge from longtime supporter Donald Hay.
Members of the Lion’s Club of Kingston made a special visit to Kingston General Hospital on June 22nd, visiting the MRI suite to hear first-hand how their gift of $100,000 will make a difference for people needing complex MRI scans.
Fundraising for the machine began in earnest through the successful Cheers to Your Health event in the fall of 2014. In thanking Mr. Smith, Homestead, and all of the MRI supporters, Dr. Annette McCallum, Head of Diagnostic Radiology for the hospitals and Queen’s says she is thrilled the project is moving forward soon. “It will dramatically shorten wait times for patients waiting for complex MRI studies required for diagnosis and treatment planning.”

Radiologists have a clear picture on what our community needs and have joined together to make a $100,000 pledge in support of the second MRI. All of the radiologists from KGH, Hotel Dieu, Providence Care and Queen’s University are participating in this philanthropic initiative. “The time may come when I need lots of medical attention and these sums of money myself. But if I don’t why not give them to [the hospitals?]” He adds, “if I give the shares - not the money but the shares - to the foundation, I don’t have to pay tax on the capital gains and I get a credit for my income tax. That sounds good to me!” Estate planning is similar, he says. If a person leaves a bequest to a charitable organization, they may end up having more money left over for their heirs, as the donation cuts down on probate or income taxes.

“I strongly recommend it,” Dr. Sampson says, “if a certain portion of your money is left to, let’s say, the hospital, it really cuts a hole in the income tax your executor is going to be faced with.” As for the cause, Dr. Sampson says he is fortunate to have not needed much care in the past. But he knows how fortunate the people of southeastern Ontario are to have access to the Kingston hospitals. “I think we have the very best of teaching doctors,” he says. “They are not only very good doctors, very good research people, but good teachers. They care for their patients. You’re lucky. People in Kingston are lucky to have the kind of hospitals and the calibre of teachers and doctors. These funds are for care at St. Mary’s and towards construction at the new Providence Care Hospital. Say Cheers! to innovative surgical care You can help KGH reclaim its leading-edge surgical suite When a specialized surgical room known as the “ACT suite” first opened in 2007, it was a state-of-the-art operating room that was the envy of many hospitals across Canada. It featured the latest technology of the day. Today, the suite is used for many innovative procedures, but technology is evolving so quickly, the footprint of the suite is becoming more confined. One of the innovative procedures conducted in the room today is a minimally-invasive heart valve replacement called TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation). Heart valve replacements routinely involve open heart surgery. With TAVI, patients who cannot have open heart surgery may still benefit, as this procedure involves transplanting the valve through an artery in the leg, carefully threading the valve to the heart. During the operation, high-resolution X-ray imaging is used to help guide the catheter. It’s a procedure that involves a team of nurses and doctors from a variety of disciplines,
including interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery and anesthesiology. At any given time, there may be a dozen people in the room. Cutting-edge endovascular surgeries are also taking place in the suite, providing patients from across southeastern Ontario with some of the best care available. But the current layout of the room and the fixed nature of the current operating room table create significant barriers to the best surgical care. At present, the room cannot be used for intraoperative imaging for neurosurgery because the current bed does not fit the needed head frames. “[We need] to change out the operating table, so that it is conducive to performing a variety of procedures,” says Operating Room Manager Laurie Thomas, of the plans to transform the suite once again into a state-of-the-art hybrid operating room. A high shutter speed imaging system also needs to be upgraded. “Instead of having this room sit idle and not being able to use it to its full
Operating Room/PACU/Same Day Admissions Manager of Laurie Thomas in the ante room beside the suite. potential, we want to ensure everything is there in the future so we can provide outstanding care for patients within our community. “It’s a safe room, but we know that we could do it better and ergonomically better,” says Dr. John Rudan, Head, Department of Surgery for Queen’s. “We have some challenges, we’ll have to change some of the infrastructure to make things fit. Things that you can’t see behind the walls need to be changed, if we are going to bring in things from the ceiling on rails they have to be hung up on the ceiling which will change how the ventilation works.”

Tim Davies then presented awards from the Davies Family Charitable Foundation in recognition of hospital supporters who contribute to Philanthropic Leadership. The first award was presented to B’nai Brith Lodge which has provided more than $250,000 to our hospitals since 1998. This organization is a philanthropic leader in the community and helps to ensure our region is a place where families, children, seniors and individuals alike can live life to its full potential. B’nai Brith members have an outstanding track record of dedication to our community. Richard Kizell spoke on behalf of the recipients. Liz Dobbs Jones was also awarded a Davies Award. Liz retired from her role as Director fo Major Gifts at UHKF in June 2014. She is a passionate, positive person who loves to help others. Liz was recognized for her personal contributions of more than 400 donations to the hospitals in the past 23 years. Her focus on improving
