For me, one of the highlights of the past year was meeting a 12-year-old girl whose selfless passion to help others so inspired me. As a new Board chair, one of my first official duties was to say thank you to this incredible young lady and that day will remain in my heart for many, many years. The young lady I am referring to, of course, is McKenna Modler (and her amazing family and army of volunteers known as the Dream Team.) It was outside the old main entrance at Kingston General Hospital that day in early August that I experienced it - a true sense of comfort in knowing the work we are doing at UHKF is not only a good thing to do, but is also the right thing to do.

I am honoured we are able to share McKenna’s story today.

Not only has McKenna been a wonderful spokesperson for the

Children’s Cancer Fund and UHKF, but she has inspired so many others along the way and continues to do so today.

We have many great stories to share about how your support is improving the places people receive care through new infrastructure, and about how we have access to some very important, specialized services, right here in Kingston.

We hear from patients whose lives have been forever changed through patientoriented research and we know how grateful staff are to learn new skills and techniques that will enable them to provide even better care at the bedside. That happens, because of you. Your support enables us to provide you, our donors, with the amazing experience of helping to improve the lives of others in our region.

A Message From the Executive Director

T

hank you for another amazing year!

With the successful conclusion of our Together We Can campaign in 2011, we were expecting the past year to be relatively calm, focused on celebrating the impact of campaign gifts with our donors.

Our year began with a move to our new office space at 55 Rideau Street. We’re thrilled that this new location has made us more accessible to donors and provided a great space for our volunteers and community supporters to meet.

For many of us, the highlight of the summer (and fall) was McKenna’s Dream - the inspiring vision of a young girl, her incredible family, and a battalion of volunteers, supporters and champions.

This year also marked the start of a new partnership with our friends at the Canadian Cancer Society – through their signature event, Relay for Life.

We were humbled by the 31 people who chose to support our hospitals through bequests from their estates this year. More than $1.8 million was given by these generous individuals, who established legacies for the future generations of patients.

In January, work began on the Ophthalmology phase I

expansion project at Hotel Dieu Hospital. The expansion, identified as one of the key fundraising targets for the year, is nearly complete thanks to your donations.

It was thrilling to attend the opening of the new outpatient clinics at Hotel Dieu in February, made possible by generous community supporters to the Together We Can campaign like you. I recall touring the shelled-in space on the 4th and 5th floors in 2005 and being astonished to learn that these floors had been empty for more than two decades.

Today, they’re providing a comfortable, bright and spacious environment for patients seeing their specialists for assessment, treatment and follow-up care.

Our March 2013 Founders’ Dinner in support of Providence Care, held just days before our year-end, was our best yet.

Paralympian Todd Nicholson inspired and entertained us with his tale of determination and grace. Talented musicians from our community made our “In a New York Minute” experience complete with their stellar renditions of Broadway tunes. It was a great way to wrap up the year!

Sharing McKenna’s Amazing Dream

T

hey say it takes a village to raise a child, but in the case of McKenna Modler, the child can inspire the village to raise and support many children.

While fighting inoperable brain cancer, McKenna has taught many people about hope, inspiration and generosity. Our future is much brighter in Southeastern Ontario because of young citizens like McKenna.

It was one afternoon in the fall of 2011 when McKenna was receiving one of her last of 70 chemotherapy treatments at Kingston General Hospital when she decided she wanted to do something to help relieve the pain of other families with young children fighting cancer.

McKenna shared her “dream” of helping others with her parents, sparking an incredible chain of events that resulted in the McKenna’s Dream event last July that continues with various efforts today.

Childhood cancer brings not only physical and emotional stresses for families, but there are often added expenses related to a child’s treatment that are not covered by insurance such as parking, travel and accommodation for out-of-town treatment. That’s where the Children’s Cancer Fund at Kingston General Hospital comes in, helping families with the burden of added costs.

her friends, classmates and community. She’s touched many with presentations and speaking opportunities and is excellent with reporters. Perhaps most of all, McKenna’s impact is best measured in the way the eyes of other children fighting cancer light up when she walks in the room. McKenna’s gentle, kind spirit has given much hope and inspiration to families fighting cancer.

Last fall, she won the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals and, on March 8, she was presented with one of 12 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards by Lt.-Gov.

To date, McKenna’s Dream has raised more than $130,000 for the Children’s Cancer Fund. McKenna is reflective of her past year: “Although my cancer journey has been a struggle, I have encountered many people along the way.

The inspiration and support for McKenna’s Dream has not only been overwhelming, but humbling. I hope that in receiving this award, young people such as myself can see that sometimes the desire to help others can turn into a dream all of its own.”

A New Facility for Patient-Oriented Research

Anne Schutta has a new lease on life.

“I

was short of breath. I couldn’t go shopping – which is very bad for a woman.

And I was generally tired, tired all of the time,” says 87-year-old Anne Schutta.

After years of suffering from a heart valve defect that kept her from being active, Anne qualified for an innovative new procedure. Instead of open heart surgery, her heart valve was replaced through a catheter inserted through her groin. She was able to go home four days after the groundbreaking procedure.

“After I had the procedure, it was a complete turn-around,” she adds, noting that she feels as good as she did 15 years ago.

Anne’s story is one of many from Kingston’s hospitals that highlight the importance of patient-oriented research, and the impact it has on our community’s health.

KGH Nurses’ Alumnae Continue Caring Ways

O

ne hundred and twentyfive years after the first class graduated, the Kingston General Hospital Nurses’ Alumnae are still improving care at the bedside for people from across the region.

It was because of their members’ ongoing caring compassion that the alumnae established an endowment fund in 1992 to support nursing education.

This year, $3,900 in nursing scholarships and awards were presented to 10 KGH nurses to continue their nursing training. The recipients include: Crystal Blakely, Bernadine Cowperthwaite, Tracie Cross, Kathy Forbes, Lee Ann Fox, Janet Giroux, Patty Jansen, Dianna Lynn Moulds-Gray, Louise Snider and Elizabeth Spratt.

Much like a permanent savings account, only the interest on the endowment fund is used. As the capital balance of the fund grows, so does the ability to support nursing education. In the past 11 years, almost $37,400 has been granted to hardworking nurses who want to continue learning and improve their skills to provide the best bedside nursing possible.

that KGH places a high value on education,” she says.

“Nursing is a profession that demands life-long learning. Our responsibilities and autonomy within our profession are continuously changing.”

Louise Snider notes that the available funds are “a huge motivator” for continuing education. “When you have the support and endorsement of your employer, it becomes a source of pride both personally and for career growth. The education we choose to pursue keeps us current on the trends in medical care. The information that one nurse learns is shared amongst many; nurses are very social people and when we learn information we not only communicate that with each other but with patients, their families, and anyone who is interested. A little education goes along way with nurses.”

Lee Ann Fox used her award to renew her Canadian Oncology Nursing Certification.

She says the funds support lifelong learning that can be costly.

In the past, she has received support from the endowment fund’s awards to help pursue her Master’s degree in Nursing.

“It is vitally important to support nursing education at KGH. Many of our nurses are motivated to go back to school. Most have families and other commitments that do not allow them to pursue education full-time and who, without financial support, could not pursue education even part-time,” Lee Ann says. “As a teaching facility, we need to ensure our staff are given the opportunity to keep their practice current.”

A Stronger Vision for Ophthalmology

Marion Smith of Picton says it’s “payback time” for access to good health care.

T

here is nothing like watching the face of a front-line care provider light up when they talk about a new piece of equipment.

That’s part of the spark that Marion Smith of Picton feels when she sees some of her donations to ophthalmology at Hotel Dieu Hospital being put to good use.

She’s been receiving care for macular degeneration there for 12 years, and knows first-hand the importance

donations make to having upto-date equipment.

“We are fortunate to have access to the wonderful care that we do,” she says. “So now I feel that it is my turn to repay them.”

Marion is one of the many donors who have contributed to an expansion of ophthalmology services on the sixth floor of the Jeanne Mance wing.

The additional five treatment rooms are urgently

needed. The demand for ophthalmology services in our region has tripled in the last 10 years.

That means there are 60,000 more patient visits and that growth is expected to continue as many older patients need cataract surgery or other visionrestoring procedures.

The local ophthalmology department is the number one choice for Canada’s top medical graduates pursuing careers in ophthalmology and boasts a clinical and basic science research program that is winning awards and grants in the fields of glaucoma, surgical services and post-surgical care.

For Marion, it makes good sense to provide those staff members with the best tools to do their jobs.

She directs her Millenniumlevel gift every year to ophthalmology and is also making a legacy gift through a bequest in her will to Kingston’s hospitals.

In addition to charitable donation benefits at tax time, she says the biggest benefit of giving is “the warm fuzzy feeling you get when you donate and you know that you are helping somebody else.”

Breathing Easier in New Clinic Space

B

ecause of you, patients and families in this region are now receiving specialized ambulatory care in state-ofthe-art facilities at Hotel Dieu Hospital, including a new, 3,800-square-foot Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) Lab that measures lung function in patients and helps to diagnose and monitor illnesses such as asthma, emphysema, lung cancer and cystic fibrosis (CF).

The local share of construction costs for the new lab was from donations to the Together We Can campaign.

With a footprint about three times the of size of the one it occupied at Kingston General Hospital, the new PFT Lab is spacious, bright and full of natural light. It is home to two diagnostic labs, an exercise testing area, clean and soiled utility rooms (critical from an infection control perspective), a conference room, staff offices and reception area.

“It’s a very forward-looking and professional environment,” says Dr. Lutz Forkert, PFT Lab Director, “and the close proximity to respirology clinics just around the corner on the same floor helps to minimize the stress on patients when they come in for testing.”

Many patients coming to the PFT Lab suffer from shortness of breath, so they are grateful for short distances, says senior respiratory therapist Cathy Muir. And those living with CF welcome the new space not only because it cuts down on

travel time but also translates into faster test results.

“Previously, pediatric patients attending the CF clinic in the Children’s Outpatient Centre (COPC) at Hotel Dieu had to travel to KGH for their lung testing and then return to Hotel Dieu for the results on the same day,” she says. “Now they can just come upstairs for testing and the COPC clinicians have the results immediately. The new Lab provides one-stop care, which is great news for patients and families.”

The PFT Lab, which sees about 450 patients every

month, also scores high in terms of confidentiality and infection control. The testing rooms can be closed off for privacy and comfort, while more rooms means more separation of patients, which results in better infection control. Helping on that front, too, is a large waiting area that allows patients to sit at a safe distance from one another, a bonus for CF patients in particular. “Our patients are even pleased with the affordable parking just across the street,” says Dr. Forkert.

Providing Comfort & Care at Providence

taff members and volunteers at Providence Care are clearly focused on meeting the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients, clients and residents within their settings.

But they need to have the right equipment available to make the experience of each person the best it can be. In fact, furniture and specialized equipment play an important role in the health and care of patients, clients and residents.

What is existing is constantly in use and it gets worn out. As an example, electric beds typically require replacement after eight years and the average ceiling lift lasts about five years.

There’s a campaign under way right now to upgrade electric beds, ceiling lifts and tubs across Providence Care’s three main sites: St. Mary’s of the Lake, Mental Health

Services and Providence Manor.

Electric beds used at Providence Manor cost about $3,000 each and are designed to facilitate recovery, ensure safety and provide extra comfort for residents who may be bedridden for long periods of time.

For those who may be frail or physically challenged, guard rails and the ability to lower a bed to make it easier to get in and out are important. Special exit alarms can also alert staff so that they can assist a resident who may be attempting to get out of bed on their own. These specialized beds make dayto-day living safer and more comfortable for everyone.

Ceiling lifts help individuals who cannot move themselves be assisted in a comfortable, safe way that helps preserve dignity. They are used across

Providence Care as the best way to safely move people from beds to wheelchairs, to help them sit up in bed and receive assistance with personal care. Ceiling lifts cost about $7,800 each.

There’s nothing like the comfort of a good soak in a bath, but at Providence Manor, there are a number of tubs that are aged and need to be replaced. Two tubs are broken and cannot be used.

Specialized tubs cost about $30,000 each.

Patients, clients and residents of Providence Care are grateful for the financial support from UHKF donors which is helping to replace beds, lifts and tubs throughout the organization.

Specialized Care Provided Close to Home

E

ach year, thousands of patients who have received care at our hospitals express their appreciation through making a donation to UHKF. Rosemary McGowan is one such supporter.

She lives an active life, playing tennis with her friends in the summertime and walking around her Brockville area neighbourhood. From her level of activity, there was very little indication last summer that she would soon need the specialized cardiac services available right here in Kingston.

From time-to-time, she may have gotten a little winded, but as she says, “I think a 75-yearold woman who runs from one side of the court to the other to retrieve a ball is entitled to be a little breathless.” Her breathing would return to normal quickly, so she did not think much more about it until she took a walk one afternoon to deliver some notes to friends in her complex.

“Suddenly my lungs were burning and I thought, ‘oh, I can’t walk that quickly.’ I sort of strolled home. The minute I stopped walking, I sat down and it went away,” she says.

Thankfully, she mentioned the event to her family physician, who suggested that perhaps she had some angina. Her doctor ordered a stress test which resulted in her being sent to Kingston for an angiogram.

Given that Rosemary is fit and leads an active life, she says everyone was surprised at the result of her angiogram. She

was soon under the care of Dr. Paul Malik, Dr. Darrin Payne and the wonderful cardiac surgery program at Kingston General Hospital where she would undergo a quadruple bypass.

Borrowing a line from one of her friends, Rosemary says, “I never met a grouch. There was never a nurse or anyone who attended me who was short or not fully committed.

They were all friendly, kind and knowledgeable.”

Don, her husband of 51 years,

agrees, noting that the staff’s calm demeanor helps patients and family members through an intimidating time. “You have the sense that you are working with trained professionals who know what they are doing and who care about you,” he says.

“We live in Brockville. It takes less than an hour to get to Kingston. To have a huge cancer centre and teaching hospital, we are lucky to be living so close.”

Hotel Dieu Hospital Opens New Clinic Spaces

O

n February 6, another new chapter in the history of Kingston’s hospitals began, as Hotel Dieu Hospital celebrated the successful completion of its $20 million redevelopment project.

It was all made possible because of the incredible support of donors to the Together We Can campaign and is already resulting in better care for people from across southeastern Ontario.

This wonderful project culminated with the official

opening of 36,000 square feet of newly-developed clinic space that is advancing Hotel Dieu Hospital’s role as a provincial leader in ambulatory health care. About 80 outpatient clinics transferred from Kingston General Hospital to Hotel Dieu in the spring, resulting in an additional 50,000 patient visits annually to Hotel Dieu.

“We’re thrilled that we can now make this space available to patients and families,” Sherri McCullough, Chair of the Hotel

Dieu Hospital Board, said during the official opening, held in the 12,000 square-foot Jeanne Mance 5 clinic.

“Look around you and you see bright, beautiful new clinical areas that are not only welcoming and supportive for patients and their families but also highly functional and flexible for staff, physicians and learners. You see a setting designed to support the most innovative and excellent practices in ambulatory care.”

The multi-million dollar construction project included creation of two floors of clinical suites, procedure rooms for urological testing and treatment, laboratory space for pulmonary function testing, an elevator tower and renovations to the main lobby and physical plant department.

Hotel Dieu’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. David Pichora, thanked donors for providing about $6 million for the project.

“As such, our new clinical space is truly a community asset – built with and for our patients and families.”

Providence Care & KGH Redevelopment

C

onstruction is expected to begin on the new Providence Care Hospital in early 2014.

Over the last year, Providence Care consulted with patients, clients, family members and over 200 frontline health care staff to determine what needs to be included in the design of the new hospital, which will replace Mental Health Services and St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital.

In June 2012, Providence Care hosted a public session and provided an update on the plans for the new hospital. Providence Care and Infrastructure Ontario representatives were available to answer questions and collect feedback. Through the year, the hospital planning team consulted community stakeholders, including health care partners and the City of Kingston.

In December, Providence Care and Infrastructure Ontario released the request for proposals (RFP) to the three companies shortlisted to design,

build, finance and maintain the new hospital. It is expected the winning bid will be finalized in late 2013 and construction will begin shortly afterwards.

Recognizing Those Who Give in Many Ways

he prestigious Davies Awards for Philanthropic Leadership are awarded annually by UHKF. Award recipients are individuals, organizations and community groups that have demonstrated outstanding philanthropic leadership benefiting Kingston’s university hospitals and the provision of health care for the people of Kingston and southeastern Ontario.

Foundation: Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation (PCFF) The goal of the PCFF and the Motorcycle Ride for Dad is to save men’s lives by supporting prostate cancer research and raising public awareness of the disease. The first Ride was held in 2000 to honour the late Charlie Pester – a local Kingston athlete. His battle with prostate cancer served as an inspiration for others and has led to raising national awareness of the disease. The first ride was held in Ottawa and the fundraiser has since grown to include 30 cities across Canada.

Last year the PCFF granted more than $60,000 to local prostate cancer research and this year they are donating more than $62,000. To date, the local Kingston-Quinte chapter has donated well over $450,000 via the PCFF to support local hospital researchers in their quest to find a cure and/or better treatment for prostate cancer.

Organization: Melo Hotels For 32 years, the Melo family has organized a golf tournament. They began in 1980 for fun and friendship. In 1992, the family changed it up and started raising funds for the United Way after the death of long-time employee, and special friend, Liz Doyle. In 2006, another dear friend, George Teves, passed away and they decided to split the proceeds between the United Way and UHKF. In 2010, the name of the tournament changed to the Joe and Maria Melo and Liz Doyle Memorial Ambassador Hotel Golf Tournament to also honour Melo Hotels founders Joe and Maria Melo. To date, over $102,000 has been donated to UHKF from the tournament’s proceeds benefiting all three hospitals. Those funds have helped support leukemia research, redevelopment of the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario and supported children’s programs at Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital.

The Melo family is known for their belief in their community and for giving back to the community that has given them so much. They have been leaders in philanthropy and have encouraged others to follow their example.

he Ian Wilson Award for Volunteerism in Fundraising is granted annually to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding volunteer efforts in the solicitation of donations benefiting Kingston’s university hospitals through an event, organized campaign or informal activity.

The award honours Ian Wilson, a former hospital board Chair, Chair of the Together We Can campaign for Kingston’s hospitals and tireless volunteer with a wide range of community and health-related organizations.

Congratulations to Richard Kizell, 2013 winner of the Ian Wilson Award for Volunteerism.

Thousands of lives have been touched through Richard Kizell’s dedicated actions. Since 1987, he has supported Kingston’s hospitals through his own significant personal philanthropy. He has also given his time through service on the foundation boards of Kingston’s hospitals for 12 consecutive years, including two years as President of the Kingston General Hospital Foundation Board, and two years as the Chair of UHKF, for which he currently serves a very active role on the Executive Committee as Past Chair. He is currently serving as Co-Chair of the Development Council for the Centre for Patient-Oriented Research at KGH. In addition to his volunteer leadership and fundraising roles with UHKF, Richard is currently serving on the campaign cabinet for the Queen’s Faculty of Health Sciences, which seeks to raise $50 million to advance the training of health care professionals as part of the Queen’s University Initiative Campaign. Richard is a long-standing leader and current treasurer of the B’Nai Brith Lodge 1191 Kingston. He has played a lead role in organizing and promoting their annual fundraising dinner which provides extensive support for health care programs and projects in the local community.

Richard also played a key role in advocating for gifts from B’Nai Brith to UHKF totaling $57,500.

Richard was also instrumental in fundraising for the Beth Israel congregational pledge of $25,000 to the UHKF Together We Can campaign. Richard Kizell is a tireless volunteer who works energetically to support the charities that are close to his heart. Richard is a strong, public-spirited leader, who demonstrates passion for his community and is looked up to by many. He is humble about his volunteer efforts and works tirelessly to advance the achievements of his team.

Kingston is a better place because of his work which will continue for many years to come.

ach year, the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation benefits from the generosity of volunteers who donate their time and expertise to help us make a difference at Kingston’s hospitals. As some of our strongest advocates, volunteers spread the word while helping us through governance on the Board and its committees, or to coordinate and run signature events such as the Founders’ Dinner, Invitational Golf Tournament, Black Tie Evening and Leadership Breakfast.

UHKF is also blessed to benefit from the dedicated assistance of volunteer Sister Dorothy Fournier in our office two days a week. We estimate that more

than 120 people volunteer on behalf of UHKF each year, spending close to 5,000 hours in preparation, planning and implementation of projects.

In addition, volunteers who work on community-run events are spending countless hours organizing golf tournaments, bocce ball tournaments, walks, runs, fashion shows, social media campaigns and so much more, all in support of raising funds that will help make a difference.

These contributions by our volunteers help to raise awareness about Kingston’s university hospitals. They also provide important funding that contributes to better care for our patients, residents

and clients, who benefit from specialized medical equipment, education and research. And all of these investments are helping to ensure better health for everyone in our community.

We are proud of our volunteers’ achievements, and we are excited to be part of a growing philanthropic and volunteer community in our region. These ambassadors are championing interest, participation and financial support for Kingston’s hospitals while promoting the best patient outcomes possible.

Because of these volunteers, and because of you, we are making a difference in local health care today, and for future generations.

Leaving A Lasting Legacy to Our Hospitals

M

ost people know that when they make a cash donation, they can see their money being put to work almost immediately – and that they will also realize an income tax saving come tax season.

Many are not as aware that planned or deferred gifts also have significant benefits for both the donor and the Foundation – and they also allow for tax savings.

Depending on the type of gift, some tax advantages can be current while others may be realized by your estate.

It was through conversation with a financial planner that Paul and Debi Moore learned of a way they could leave a lasting legacy for Kingston’s hospitals through a gift of life insurance. “It was mentioned to us that we didn’t always have to have a family member as a beneficiary.

“It gave us the opportunity to make a more generous donation than we ever could have,” Debi says. “It’s just one of those nice things that works out for everybody.”

Giving a new or existing insurance policy allows people to make a sizable gift with only a small annual or monthly outlay. In addition, a tax credit is available for immediate tax advantage.

Our Hospitals are Partnering with Patients

012-13 was an important time for all three of Kingston’s hospitals, with new initiatives focused on patient and family-centred care.

Donations from our community supported many of these efforts. The mantra “nothing about me without me” is becoming commonplace across all three of Kingston’s hospitals.

At Kingston General Hospital, the patient and family experience is being transformed through a relentless focus on quality, safety and service. The patient journey through KGH is as complex as the hospital itself, with stops at many different departments, floors and specialized units.

By partnering with patients and their families, KGH staff is making sure the patient journey is smooth and efficient and that patients have the best possible experience, every step of the way.

Over 50 patient experience advisors are partnering with staff, physicians and students to shape new models of care and transform the patient experience.

Hotel Dieu Hospital continues its journey implementing Patient and Family-Centred Care (PFCC), a foundational element to providing an excellent patient care experience.

Over 65 per cent of all Hotel Dieu staff members have now participated in education about PFCC. The first group of six Patient Experience Advisors were recruited and oriented this year and have begun to work with the hospital on activities such as policy review, committees, patient safety walkabouts, public events and problem-solving. A second group is slated for orientation in June. Overseeing all of this activity is a PFCC Steering Committee comprised of direct care providers, management,

physicians and a Patient Experience Advisor.

Together, they have taken a leadership role in work related to implementing a Registered Nurses Association of Ontario guideline for clientcentred care, and they are monitoring the addition of a PFCC orientation module for new staff. And they will be developing a research study to measure new staff’s recognition of the core PFCC concepts before and after orientation.

Providence Care is committed to person and family-centred care, in an interdisciplinary approach that involves all staff members who have contact with patients, clients and residents. “It is about developing a connection that allows for collaboration and shared decision-making,” says Barbara Robinson, program educator. “We are partners in care.”

Mr. Raymond Feeley enjoys one of the many activities at Providence Manor, where residents are provided with a quality of life to help them feel at home and that they are part of a larger family. Donations to Providence Manor enable “extra” things to happen that help nourish the happiness and joy of residents and their family members, above and beyond the “necessities” provided through government funding.

Bell Let’s Talk fund will spark conversations this fall Providence Care’s Community Connections Recovery Program is getting ready for a 10-day public arts festival during Mental Health Awareness Week.

The event is aimed at promoting access to mental health care, community inclusion and stigma reduction in our community and is made possible through a grant to UHKF from the Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund.

The program is a communitybased, individualized rehabilitative program that offers a supportive environment for people to learn skills and coping strategies for successful community living.

The $33,500 grant from Bell Let’s Talk means the program’s Hope and Discovery Artisans can expand to serve more mental health clients.

The funds also support outreach with professional

artists who are working with the group to further their skills in visual arts, music, photography and drama.

Not only will the project enable people living with mental illness to showcase their artistic abilities, but it will also provide employment opportunities for people in the Kingston area who are living with mental illness.
