Your support makes it happen Donors see the difference in Urgent Care
Because of your support, hard-working physicians, nurses and others in the urgent care centre at Hotel Dieu Hospital have better tools to use in the care of our families, neighbours and community. In March, Charge Nurse Nancy Douthwaite and Program Manager Carol McIntosh opened up urgent care for an early morning donor tour. Their goal was to show you how your gifts are being used to help people from across our region. Donors who made a specific gift in support of a special portable ultrasound machine through a direct mail program were invited to the behind-the-scenes look at this busy patient care area. This is one of several opportunities that the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF) and the hospitals are providing to you, so that you can see how your gifts are making a difference. The portable ultrasound machine is used about six times a day by emergency physicians to help provide them — See Ultrasound on page 8

It’s hard to believe 10 years have passed since my family made Kingston our home. It’s even harder to believe the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation is approaching its 10th anniversary as the joint fundraising program for Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston General and Providence Care.
I can think of many inspiring stories that I’ve heard over the years. Susan Creasy knows we deserve the best health care This is an exciting time as the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation prepares to launch a major campaign in support of the next major phase of redevelopment of healthcare for your region. And we are thrilled that community leader Susan Creasy will chair the campaign which will be publicly launched this fall. Susan is no stranger to taking on key leadership roles to benefit people from the area and has a reputation of trustworthiness earned over the course of her time in Kingston. She is the owner and president at Susan Creasy Financial Inc. and has been recognized for a number of philanthropic achievements, including her work on the Rose of Hope golf tournament supporting the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario. As a former member of the volunteer Board of Directors at Kingston General Hospital, Susan knows Kingston health care. She is now calling on our supportive community, seeking out energetic volunteers to join the campaign effort.
Susan Creasy and her family understand the importance of supporting your community. Their voluntarism and financial support of our hospitals is impressive! Susan says her role as campaign chair is not as daunting as one may think, because Kingston area residents really care about making sure excellent care is available for their loved ones. “I think Kingston is a great community. We support each other and we have opportunities and lifestyle privileges here that are second to none,” says Susan, “I really am looking to the
community to support us in whatever way they can for this campaign.” To help the campaign get off to a good start, Susan announced her own personal gift. Over the next five years, she is committing a gift of $100,000 to the MRI at KGH and capital campaign projects at Hotel Dieu and Providence Care.
´3URYLGHQFH 9LOODJHµ ORFDWLRQ LGHQWLÀHG DV SRWHQWLDO VLWH IRU QHZ 0DQRU In mid-May, the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul announced they are planning to transform their property at 1200 Princess Street into a “village” community that includes long-term care and assisted living facilities. Known as Heathfield to many, the Motherhouse is one of a handful of properties owned by the Sisters. “We have a long-standing relationship with Providence Care, which continues to deliver our healthcare mission in this region today,” said Sister Sandra Shannon, General Superior. The 243-bed long-term care home, Providence Manor, is at the site of the first Motherhouse belonging to the
Sisters, established when they arrived from Montreal in 1861. Today, the building no longer meets design standards for long-term care. “We are looking for a site to redevelop Providence Manor,” said Peter Merkeley, Board Chair of Providence Care. The Providence Village location would be ideal “because of its proximity to activities, transit and other community resources.” One of the first services that could be located in the area could be a new Manor, sometime in the next five to 10 years, pending government approvals and fundraising through UHKF. How involved do you want to be? Have you been on one of our McCoy Passport to Healthcare tours yet? Here are a few images from the April tour. Our donors “suited up” to go behind the scenes in the operating rooms at Hotel Dieu Hospital, and toured the Imaging Department at Kingston General Hospital where they saw the Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine and saw where the second MRI will be built, once we’ve raised the funds to purchase and install the machine. The next tour will be in the fall.
Our hospital foundation benefits greatly from the support of many incredible volunteers. On Volunteer Week, staff delivered thanks (in the form of cookies) to many people who give generously of their time in support of UHKF’s mission.

Dermatologists Dr. Yuka Asai, Dr. Mark Kirchhof and Dr. Benvon Moran provided an engaging talk at a recent Bell luncheon, thanking donors for their support. Dermatology is located at the intersection between medicine and surgery, Dr. Asai said. Skin diseases can be common and also can be life-threatening. The skin provides “a window into what’s happening in the body,” she says. It’s also about quality of life. As Dr. Moran indicated, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and

This procedure enables the specialist to remove cancer cells layer-by-layer without wasting healthy cells around the cancerous ones. This is particularly important for treatment of areas such as the edge of your eyelid, or rim of your nose. Dr. Moran is one of only 15 specialists trained to provide Mohs surgery in Canada. In June, Kingston will be one of only three centres in Ontario to offer the procedure. But it isn’t just people fighting skin cancer whose care is life-changing. Mary, one of the first people to receive phototherapy at the clinic at Hotel Dieu, shared her story. For 20 years, she has suffered from psoriasis and a year ago, just before she first met Dr. Asai, Mary says her condition wors-

Taking advantage of lifelong learning and sharing
&DUROLQH )DUUHOO LV LQYHVWLQJ LQ WKH IXWXUH RI FDUH When an opportunity comes along to learn more about health care in our community, Caroline Farrell’s interest is piqued. As an example, she toured the endoscopy treatment ambulatory clinic area at Hotel Dieu Hospital with the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation’s Women’s Giving Circle in April. But Caroline isn’t simply interested in hearing from our world-class care providers and getting a behind-thescenes look at our hospitals, she is also investing in it. Caroline included a bequest in her Will in support of palliative care provided through Providence Care. “I want to know that the services are available when they are needed,” she says. Her husband, Howard, spent his final days at St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital in 2006. Because she came to understand the needs of the hospitals, Caroline requested memorial donations support UHKF. When Howard’s name was added to the memorial wall at Kingston General Hospital, Caroline was invited to a special memorial event. That was the first of several UHKF events that Caroline has attended. In addition to her planned gift, Caroline is a member of the Women’s Giving Circle — a group that pools funds to spark local research in Kingston’s hospitals. A retired French instructor at Royal Military College, Caroline has worked and studied in many parts of the world. She’s an accomplished artist
Caroline is actively involved with many local organizations. She has a thirst for knowledge and enjoys learning more about the world around her — including the services available in the Kingston hospitals. She’s an active member of the Canadian Federation of University Women, the Queen’s Institute for Lifelong Learning, an art class and an antiques group. Caroline teaches French classes at the Seniors Centre in Kingston. She says that her interest in supporting the hospitals is based in the fact that she lives here. “I believe that they can use support and you have a duty to support what you believe in.” Her bequest is a way to “pay it forward,” noting that she has benefited from the generosity of others in the past, such as through scholarships for her education. In thinking about her desire to sup-
port palliative care, she stresses the importance of being able to die with dignity. “It’s important to have a good death and not to suffer.” Caroline has twice won the battle against cancer and has many friends who have also lived with cancer. She knows the importance of having access to quality, supportive care. She also knows how fortunate we are at the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario to have access to some incredible care providers such as Dr. George F. Linn who can make the journey even better.
