This includes 185 hip or knee replacements, where patients recover in a shortstay unit and return home in 48 hours.

By supporting the expansion of eye care services at Hotel Dieu, you have enabled a first-of-its-kind treatment space for age-related macular disease.

This space is designed for safe, efficient treatment of more patients.

Urgent Care staff are committed to continually looking for better ways to provide care. You have helped them too by providing equipment such as a portable ultrasound device, blanket warmers and more.

Hundreds of people are now receiving care through a new dermatology clinic at Hotel Dieu.

Your New HOSPITAL The new Providence Care Hospital will use rooftop terraces and indoor courtyards to take advantage of natural lighting and the beauty of nearby Lake Ontario, creating a therapeutic and hopeful atmosphere for patients and clients. The hospital will also incorporate new technology throughout the hospital to enhance efficiency in the delivery of care.

Providence Care will be the first hospital of its kind to bridge mental health care with physical rehabilitation and complex care services under one roof. This union is a step forward in eliminating stigma around mental health and its associated facilities.

Finding hope

Mike Gardner and his wife were preparing dinner at home when he first experienced the alarming symptoms of a stroke.

“I just couldn’t move my left side. I literally couldn’t move my hand, my leg, and I started to feel very weak,” he recalls.

“I just said to my wife, call 911.

Something’s not going right here.”

Fortunately the Gardner family had just moved to Kingston, home to one of Canada’s top acute stroke teams. They were able to get Mike the care he needed as soon as he arrived at 10

Kingston General Hospital. Doctors quickly presumed that he was suffering a stroke, and immediately got him the MRI, diagnostics and medication he needed.

“I got the sense from the two doctors who were taking care of me at the time that they were going to try to help me the best they could,” he says.

The urgency of Mike’s stroke meant he was able to get an MRI right away, but there is a growing need for a second MRI machine in our region to service the hundreds of other patients waiting for a scan.

“Imagine if you had a few more MRIs,” says Mike, “how many more lives would you save? There are a lot of people out there that need it.”

After a month of care at KGH, Mike was moved to Providence Care’s St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital site where he began a rigorous rehabilitation program.

Mike continues to work alongside a team of doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists, improving his mobility every day.

Six months after his stroke, Michael is walking himself down the path to recovery but still has a lot of work to do.

“I’ve still got a lot of road ahead,” he says, but he doesn’t think he would have been able to go home three months after his stroke if KGH and Providence Care weren’t making this happen.

Assessing the most complex cases Kingston General Hospital is much more than its name suggests – in fact, it is the hospital where people from across Southeastern Ontario are sent for their most specialized care.

Cardiac, cancer, trauma, 12

pediatrics, neurological and critical care are just a few of the many specialties at KGH. All of these services rely on diagnostics to help provide the right information for assessment and treatment

of patients. KGH is also home to the only MRI in southeastern Ontario where the most complex scans can be completed.

A second MRI would help our residents get needed complex scans faster.

Working towards to our $6M goal A $6-million fundraising project was launched in late 2014 in an effort to bring a second MRI to KGH. The provincial government has agreed to pay ongoing operating funds for the machine, if our community

comes up with the funds to purchase the unit and to have it installed.

To date, more than 400 people are supporting this major initiative. Some have taken part through Cheers! event dinner parties, others

have made outright donations.

We know the need for the machine is real. The sooner we can get it installed, the less time our friends and families will need to wait for vital diagnostic scans.

Congratulations to long-serving board member, donor and volunteer extraordinaire Jennifer Fisher. Jennifer is being awarded the 2015 Ian Wilson Award for Volunteerism.

Jennifer has given in all ways possible to UHKF. A long-serving and hardworking member of the Board, Jennifer has served on two of the hospital foundation boards.

As Treasurer of UHKF, she actively chaired the Finance and Resource Committee from its inception until the amalgamation in July 2014. She has provided invaluable advice to UHKF staff throughout UHKF’s entire history.

Jennifer has participated in the entire spectrum of giving. She is a generous donor, and her company has given as well. Jennifer has opened many doors in the business community on behalf of UHKF, attends calls with supporters, and assists in municipal presentations and in thanking donors.

Jennifer is an excellent volunteer who is very deserving of the Ian Wilson Award.

Liz Dobbs Jones retired from her role as Director of Major Gifts at UHKF in June 2014. She is a passionate, positive person, who loves to help others. Her focus on improving health care for people of our region is steadfast. She has been unfailingly generous with her own time and money, encouraging and inspiring others to do the same. If Liz walked into a room and you didn’t know her, she would introduce herself by saying, “We’re all just friends who haven’t met yet.”

And she also understands how important it is that we play a role in ensuring we will have access to the best in the future.

Susan is so committed to building our healthcare services, she is taking on a major volunteer role in leading the next fundraising campaign in support of redevelopment of Kingston healthcare.

She has also committed a personal gift of $100,000.

“I think Kingston is a great community. We support each other and have opportunities and lifestyle privileges here that are second to none,” she says.

“I think Kingston really cares.”
