DRIVING CHANGE FOR SAN ANTONIO

LIVE BETTER 2023 SUMMARY

Philanthropy at University Health Foundation Sara M. Alger, CFRE President, University Health Foundation Your dedication to this company-wide initiative has not only improved the lives of our patients and staff through University Health Foundation but has also made a meaningful impact on the San Antonio community through the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. Whether you volunteered your time, made a pledge, or rolled up your sleeves to donate blood, together we have raised $540,558. Your collective efforts truly exemplify what it means to help others Live Better. We offer a special thanks to our Live Better chairs – Cynthia De La Pena, Stacey Denver, and Lisa Sanchez. They embraced their roles with enthusiasm and tenacity, and for that we are grateful. In addition, 135 colleagues served as ambassadors, inspiring us with their why and encouraging us to give from the heart – we offer a heartfelt thank you to them, as well. The success of Live Better is a testament to the generosity and compassion that runs deep within University Health. We are incredibly thankful for the cash donations and pledges, the blood donations, and all the dollars raised through 70 different department events throughout University Health. Your commitment has made a lasting difference, and I am incredibly proud to work alongside such a caring and dedicated group of colleagues.

Blood Donation A Record-Breaking Year

It’s through your selfless donations at University Hospital’s blood donation center that we are able to save countless lives every year. This year, for every employee-based blood donation made during Live Better, $150 was donated to the University Health Injury Prevention Program.

Thanks to the 739 Live Better blood donors, $110,850 will be designated to the Injury Prevention Program, doubling last year's numbers.

Injury Prevention Helping to prevent traumatic illness and injury, the experts in our Injury Prevention Department lead our safety efforts for children and adults with educational programs and safety workshops. This program is designed to prevent unintentional and intentional injury for our patients and community members.

The Ambassador Impact Ambassadors serve a key role in the success of Live Better! In addition to being champions of the cause, this year’s 135+ ambassadors actively educated and engaged their teams and helped us spread the message about the importance of giving. Our incredible ambassadors took the time to be resources and liaisons for their teams, and their contributions to Live Better were instrumental to the campaign’s success!

Sandy Bustos Inpatient Pharmacy, Live Better ambassador

“I have been an ambassador for the last five years now. Every year, I get to go to each of our locations, spend time with our employees, and hear their stories on how the Foundation or United Way has helped them. I like that our department as a whole gets a chance to get involved and give back to our community.”

Jessica Powell Community First, Live Better ambassador

“I give to help those in need and make a positive impact in the community I live and work in. I believe that every donation, no matter how much, can make a big difference for someone in need. I continue to give to help build and strengthen the community around me.”

Becky Salas Coordinator of Care, Live Better ambassador

“Our support, donations, and compassion make a difference in our patients’ lives. I have seen first-hand the positive impact in our patients’ health, food securities, housing, financial stability and job opportunities. I’m so grateful to be a Live Better ambassador and make a difference in our community.”

What’s New In 2023 Events for a Cause Departments had the option to hold fundraising events and designate their proceeds to the University Health Foundation, United Way, or split the funds 50/50 between both organizations. Being Social University Health employees took to social media to share why they chose to give back, inspiring others online to do the same. By doing so, all who tagged @University Health Foundation were entered to win a pair of Santikos movie tickets!
