CAREER DEVELOPMENT You can get the coaching and guidance you need to prepare for the job you want with the UHD Career Development Center. Career Counselors are available to assist you in self-assessments, resume and cover letter writing, graduate school admissions, interview preparation and networking advice. They hold an annual fall Career Fair which attracts more than 60 employers who generate over 400 interviews within weeks after the event. The Marilyn Davies College of Business Career Center is also available to provide assistance to students regarding career opportunities, training to develop communication and interview-related skills, and assistance with securing internships and full-time positions. –2–

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT At UHD, we pride ourselves on contributing to the local community. As a student, you will have the opportunity to partner with the community to share knowledge and resources which contribute to the public good. Last year, over 429,645 community service hours were completed by students, faculty, and staff. We offer a number of service learning courses across academic disciplines, enabling you to apply the knowledge and skills you develop in the classroom while you tackle real world issues.

HONORS PROGRAM The University Honors Program offers high-achieving students an enriched academic and co-curricular experience in a supportive environment. Honors students belong to a vibrant community of scholars with a shared passion for learning, exploring and creating. As an Honors student, you will be immersed in a culture designed to transform academic potential into achievement.

The Honors Program is inclusive of all majors. Students are connected with faculty from their disciplines within their first semester of study. Core level Honors courses help prepare you to work one-on-one with faculty in student-driven Honors projects and research within their majors. Each student’s “Honors Experience” reflects individual abilities, interests and future goals. Admission to the Honors Program is highly competitive. Scholarships are available for qualified applicants.

SCHOLARS ACADEMY The UHD Scholars Academy promotes academic success for students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Each year, 160 students are supported through scholarships, mentoring and education-enhancing experiences.

Easy access to the Buffalo Bayou hike-andbike trails and 160 acre Buffalo Bayou Park.

Scholars Academy nurtures students with a passion for STEM. Over 500 alumni from the Academy are pursuing advanced degrees, and more than 91 percent remain in STEM industries after graduation. Scholars Academy has awarded more than 3,300 recipients and approximately $6,000,000 in scholarships. – 5–

Student Life A well-rounded student is a successful student. Develop life and leadership skills while having fun in college! UHD offers a number of opportunities to get involved and stay active outside the classroom. Embrace student life, explore your interests and passions, and promote a healthy lifestyle with the help of student activities, sports and fitness programs, the Student Life Center, the O’Kane Theatre and O’Kane Gallery.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS With more than 90+ student clubs and organizations, there are various opportunities for students to get involved. Join an organization to interact with other students, faculty and staff members with similar interests, such as, Greek, professional, academic, service, cultural, recreational or honorary organizations. By joining student organizations, you will have the chance to strengthen your leadership skills, make new friends, and gain access to exciting new opportunities on and off campus. STUDENT ACTIVITIES Student Activities is dedicated to supporting the educational mission of the University of Houston-Downtown by enriching students’ college experience outside the classroom. They are the hub of all things social, cultural and community focused at UHD. Student Activities is committed to providing programs and events that complement students’ experience in the classroom and help them develop their life and leadership skills. UHD strives to enhance learning and personal development through programs that are purposeful and fun!

SPORTS AND FITNESS Sports and fitness programs provide fun-filled physical activities aimed at promoting wellness and personal development. Participate in one of 11 competitive Club Sports or one of 10 recreational sports teams to enhance your experience. UHD students embrace a healthy lifestyle, which can strengthen academic studies and build friendships and social skills. Group activities help develop leadership qualities and cultivate a sense of ownership and belonging to the university. The Student Life Center is a three-level, 30,000 square foot facility which features two ball courts equipped for basketball, volleyball and badminton, a multipurpose studio for aerobics and martial arts, and a fitness center with weight and cardiovascular equipment. As a UHD student, you will have full access to all of these amenities.

UHD is the smart choice for students seeking college degrees. You will pay 16 percent less than the average tuition of any four-year public university in Texas, and our Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid is here to offer assistance to help fill in any gaps.
