Each graduate program may have different GPA, academic, course, and graduate test score requirements. Some programs may not require a graduate test score and/or offer a graduate test score waiver.
Each academic college and program may have a different admission review process, including varying review schedules. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The FAFSA is used to determine eligibility for federal, state, and university financial aid — including both need-based and non-need-based aid — for graduate students. The 20252026 FAFSA is available at www.studentaid.gov. UHCL FAFSA code: 011711.
Need-Based Aid
Your financial need determines the awarding of grants and work-study programs. Your FAFSA is used to award federal, state, and university need-based aid.
Graduate student loans
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available for all qualified FAFSA applicants, and there is no requirement to demonstrate financial need. The maximum annual loan amount is $20,500 (based on enrollment in 9 credit hours per semester) for graduate students.
Merit-Based Aid
Students receive merit-based funds based on their academic achievements, and they do not require repayment.
Departmental scholarships - We have several scholarship options available for both new and current students. Some require a specific program of study, while general scholarships are available to students in any degree program.
Hawk Scholars Scholarships - Hawk Scholars Scholarships are awarded for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. Non-Texas residents and international students who receive the award are eligible to pay Texas-resident tuition for the academic year.
Graduate Assistantships - Teaching and research assistantships are open to all current and incoming graduate students for select programs in the Colleges of Science and Engineering, Human Sciences and Humanities, and Education.
