2026 Leadership Team Bios The Student Orientation Leadership team is dedicated to creating a welcoming and impactful experience for all new students transitioning into the University of Houston. Through collaboration, planning, and mentorship, the leadership team plays a vital role in fostering opportunities for academic, social, and cultural engagement within New Student Programs.

Diane, Orientation Captain, Class of 2028 Diane is a sophomore majoring in Economics in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences at the University of Houston. Aside from her studies, Diane plays the flute for our distinguished university band, The Spirit of Houston.

Jada, Orientation Captain, Class of 2028 Jada is a sophomore majoring in Biology in the college of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Houston. Aside from her studies, Jada is a member of the Black Student Health Association on campus.

Kendra, Orientation Captain, Class of 2027 Kendra is a junior majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Spanish in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Houston.

Aside from her studies, Kendra is a member of the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association on campus.

KT, Orientation Captain, Class of 2028 KT is a sophomore majoring in Kinesiology with a minor in Human Nutrition in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences at the University of Houston. Aside from his studies, KT is a participant in the Safety & Security Department on campus.

Monique, Orientation Captain, Class of 2026 Monique is a senior majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Human Development and Family Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Houston. Aside from her studies, Monique is also a member of the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association and the American Sign Language Society on campus.

Our leaders come from a variety of backgrounds, majors, and experiences but they all have one thing in common: a deep love for the University of Houston and a commitment to helping students succeed. Take a moment to learn more about their student involvement and academic experiences below:

Alex, Student Orientation Director, Class of 2027 Alex is a junior majoring in Global Hospitality Leadership at the Conrad N. Hilton College at the University of Houston. Aside from her studies, Alex serves as a UH Ambassador and she dedicates her time to bridging the gap between students and University supporters.

Kylie, Student Orientation Coordinator, Student Experience, Class of 2026 Kylie is a senior majoring in Exercise Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Science at the University of Houston. Aside from her studies, Kylie serves as the Vice President of the American Medical Women’s Association where she provides opportunities for students pursuing medical career pathways.

Liliana, Student Orientation Coordinator, Student Experience, Class of 2028 Liliana is a sophomore majoring in Global Hospitality Leadership at the Conrad N. Hilton College at the University of Houston. Liliana also serves as a Hilton Ambassador within her academic college, and she plays the clarinet for our distinguished university band, The Spirit of Houston.

Tailyn, Student Orientation Coordinator, Family and Supporter, Class of 2028 Tailyn is a sophomore double majoring in Accounting and Marketing in the C.T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston. As an honors student, Tailyn is involved in the Bauer College Honors Program and has also been recognized as a Texas Leadership Scholar.

Noah, Student Orientation Coordinator, Orientation Logistics, Class of 2028 Noah is a sophomore majoring in Computer Information Systems in the College of Engineering at the University of Houston. Aside from his studies, Noah is a part of the Army ROTC program and a member of the Society of American Military Engineers.

Campus traditions are the driving force of our campus community here at the University of Houston. Our traditions represent institutional history, campus culture, and school spirit. From key customs and symbols to historical landmarks, UH Traditions are the heartbeat of student experience and sense of belonging on campus!

The Cougar Paw began in 1953 after mascot Shasta I, (the presiding mascot) lost a toe when her paw was caught in a cage door on the way to a game against University of Texas (UT). UT fans mocked the injury by folding their ring finger, but UH reclaimed the gesture back in 1976 with a 30-0 win over the Longhorns, filling the stadium with the Cougar Paw & unity since then.

Frontiersmen: The Frontiersmen are a spirited group of students who uphold UH traditions at athletic events. Dressed in cowboy hats, dusters, and boots, they carry the Texas flag and wave it proudly on the field during home games. Their presence symbolizes the university’s pioneering spirit and pride.

GET INVOLVED AT UH The University of Houston’s Get Involved portal is the main hub for student engagement on campus. It gives students one place to explore organizations, discover events, and find opportunities that match their interests, goals, and passions. With more than 600 student organizations available, the platform makes it easy to connect with the UH community and get involved outside the classroom. Whether students want to meet new people, gain leadership experience, build their resumes, or feel more connected on campus, the Get Involved is the best place to start.

One of the best ways students can get involved at UH is through the many University Sponsored and Affiliated Organizations. Students interested in media and entertainment can join Affiliated Organizations like Coog Radio, CoogTV, The Cougar, and Cooglife Magazine to gain hands-on experience in broadcasting, journalism, design, photography, and content creation.

UH also offers several University Sponsored Organizations that create large-scale programs, traditions, and campus experiences designed to help students feel connected on campus.

For students looking to build connections and create memorable experiences on campus, organizations like the Cougar Experience Board (CEB) and Student Program Board (SPB) play a major role in student life. CEB brings students exciting evening, weekend, and off-campus experiences designed to make college life unforgettable.

SPB plans some of the largest and most recognized events on campus, including concerts, movie nights, and special programs that bring students together throughout the year.

There are also organizations that help students grow as leaders, support diversity and culture across campus, give back through volunteering, and celebrate cougar Spirit.

The Council for Cultural Activities (CCA) creates programs and events that highlight different cultures and help students feel included and connected. The Metropolitan Volunteer Program (MVP) gives students opportunities to volunteer throughout Houston and get involved in the community. Students looking for leadership experience can get involved with the Student Government Association (SGA), which represents the student body and helps advocate for student needs on campus. The Homecoming Board helps plan one of the biggest traditions of the year, bringing together current students, alumni, and the entire UH community to celebrate Cougar pride through events and campus traditions.

Even though you are not on campus yet, start to map out your daily schedule. Download the UH Go app and search the buildings your classes are in on the map to see walking directions for campus.

Knowing how long it will take you to get from one class to the next is a great use of time management. This is also a great time to pencil in some hypothetical time for meals,

Cougar DENS: Building Community,y Confidenc Confidence, ce, and a Strong Start at UUHH For many students, the first few weeks of college feel like stepping into the unknown. New faces, new expectations, and a campus full of opportunities— exciting, yet overwhelming. At the University of Houston, one program is designed g to turn that uncertaintyy into confidence: Cougar DENS. Short for Discover, r Empower, r, r Navigate, r, Succeed, Cougar DENS is a transition program for first-year and transfer students. From the moment students arrive on campus, DENS provides a builtin network of peers, mentors, and resources so no student has to navigate the transition alone. It’s a community. A support system. A place where questions are welcomed, connections are built, and growth begins.

A Community Designed for Transition At itss core, Cougar DENS is about conne ection. Students are placed in connection. cohor rt-based communities where they cohort-based engag ge with peers facing similar engage transi itions. Guided by the DENS Framework Cougar DENS distinguishes itself through its intentional structure. The program is organized around four key pillars—Discover, r Empower, r, r Navigate, r, and Succeed—each representing diff f erent stages in the student transition ff different journey.

Students begin by exploring campus resources, traditions, and opportunities available to them. Peer Support That Makes the Difference A key aspect of Cougar DENS is its focus on peer leadership. DENS Leaders are essential in supporting new students offering during their first year by off f ering ff mentorship, sharing personal experiences, p , and providing p g practical p tips p on topics such as coursework and campus involvement. Through monthly programs, weekly engagement, individual coaching, and casual check-ins, these leaders keep students engaged and connected. They serve as friendly, relatable guides who understand the challenges of the transition firsthand.

Creating a Sense of Belonging Cougar DENS recognizes that each student’s journey is unique. To support diverse experiences, the program includes subgroups tailored to specific populations, including first-generation students, out-of-state out-off state students, and foffer veterans. These subgroups off f er targeted ff support while reinforcing a broader sense of inclusion across the UH community.

In addition to in-person engagement, students can connect through virtual communities, group chats, and campuswide events. STRENGTHS THROUGH MY TOP 5 Feeling stuck has been one of the hardest obstacles I’ve had to overcome. In my case, this has been a frequent, endless cycle. Did I choose the correct major and path for my future career? Are my study methods effective enough to pass my exams? What are some traits that help identify who I am? All of these questions reflect current events in life that didn’t have a clear answer until very recently. Through an established online assessment provided by the University of Houston at uh.edu/strengths, CliftonStrengths by Gallup has helped me identify my strengths and understand how I apply them in my day-to-day life.

RELATOR People with strong Relator talent enjoy developing deep, meaningful relationships and tend to value authenticity, trust, and close connection over broad social networking.

What resonated most was the way these talents are categorized. Remarkably, my top five strengths all fell under “Relationship Building” and “Influencing” domains. Reading the detailed report by Gallup helped me understand the “why” behind the decisions I make. It explained why I’m drawn to team-based environments, attributes often found in the world of Accounting. This similar area also helped clarify my passion for being a member of the Spirit of Houston, which is the largest student organization on campus. Grouped with band, cheer, spirit, and mascots, this core helps represent the university on both academic and athletic fronts. Leaning into my strengths hasn’t just clarified my major; it has helped me truly prosper throughout my college career.

Beyond the broad categories, Gallup tailors the results with surprising precision, providing a detailed background for each individual theme. My personal chart mapped out how each of my top five strengths interacts with the others, with impressive accuracy. Thanks to some extra resources provided through the university’s Strengths website, such as personalized coaching and workshops, CliftonStrengths has allowed me to understand how I approach everything from life events to simple conversations. One of the most intuitive features provided was the personalized scenarios for each specific attribute. Reviewing these results has been a true eye-opener, allowing a clearer mirror into my personality that I haven’t seen before.

With this clearer viewpoint, I can provide energy and advocate for the unique perspective my strengths allow me to bring to the table.
