THE OVERTURE
What you are seeing this evening is the result of a collaboration between Hargrett’s Exhibition Coordinator and Archivist, Dr. Jan Hebbard, Archivist Mazie Bowen, Professor George Contini, and the 60 Students in his Fall 2024 Broadway Musical and American Culture Class. Working with the SCL’s Samuel Golden Poster Collection the students evaluated mid 20th century musical posters and chose those they felt had the most captivating graphic design. Then, they chose numbers they’d like to hear our students in the UGA Musical Theatre Certificate Program sing from those shows. The students in the Spring 2025 Musical Theatre Showcase class then chose the numbers they’d like to work on.
The Golden Age (1942-72) represents a particular mid-century Broadway sound. You know it when you hear it. The scores are bold, brassy, rhythmic, and unashamedly emotionally charged. The lyrics are actively trying to find innovative and clever new ways of saying the same old stuff that musicals have always been saying. In looking at the songs the students collected, the list represented examples of what are now seen as standard dramaturgical conventions in musical libretti and scores. So that is the framework of our concert tonight---presenting the types of songs that make a musical. This two-semester collaboration was a dynamic creative research project for our students and faculty in bringing the archives to life. It’s especially terrific when our research can be showtunes! So, sit back and enjoy the research!
