Starting in early modern Britain and tracing the story of bacon through the colonial era, Civil War, Progressive Era, modern fad diets, and the emerging craft bacon industry, Johnson provides a new perspective on some familiar American narratives. The year 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. But does the nation begin in 1776, or do we trace its origins to some point earlier—for example, the arrival of the first enslaved people in 1619 or the initial settlement of Indigenous people? What’s at stake with establishing a date that marks the nation’s origins? Where does the history of the nation begin? In colonial New England, the Chesapeake, or in the Southwest?

CATHERINE CLINTON is the Denman Professor of American History at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She has served as president of the Southern Historical Association, is an elected member of the Society of American Historians, and is a recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship. She is the author and editor of more than two dozen volumes, including Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom; Mrs. Lincoln: A Life; Stepdaughters of History; and Civil War Stories (Georgia).

JIM DOWNS is the Gilder Lehrman-National Endowment for the Humanities Professor of History at Gettysburg College, a 2025–26 Guggenheim Fellow, and the director of the African American History Program at the Library Company of Philadelphia.

In addition to coediting Beyond Freedom: Disrupting the History of Emancipation and Connexions: Histories of Race and Sex in North America, he has authored Maladies of Empire: How Colonialism, Slavery, and War Transformed Medicine; and Sick from Freedom: African-American Illness and Suffering During the Civil War and Reconstruction.

In this unprecedented volume, leading thinkers come together to debate these—and many other—issues. Their conversation shows that U.S history is not just about what happened but who gets to tell the story and the political implications of the narratives we tell. The participants include two Pulitzer Prize winners: Nikole Hannah-Jones, who created the 1619 Project and ignited a national conversation about slavery and the nation’s founding; and Annette Gordon-Reed, who documented Thomas Jefferson’s relationship with Sally Hemmings. The other specialists include experts in Asian American, civil rights, Native American, Latino, LGBT, and early American history.

Pat Cunningham Devoto had specific hopes for the women imprisoned at the Montgomery Women’s Facility who participated in her book club for the better part of seven years. She hoped the books they read would give some respite from their daily prison life and, at the same time, hoped the individual members might gain valuable knowledge that would have a positive impact on their future. Doesn’t that sound lovely?

Instead, Devoto learned how to “brew” a batch of beer—right under the guards’ noses; how to assume a stone-faced expression while a guard berated her because she brought books—to the book club; what it’s like to have a wedding, complete with trimmings, while imprisoned; how to anonymously pester the parole board from the prison phones; how to make hand sanitizer punch; and how to use PREA cards in the exact opposite way they are meant to be used. In other words, the best way for a self-proclaimed naïve, middle-class, law-abiding novice like Devoto to learn how to be a crook was to go to prison. But in the beginning, of course, she hadn’t a clue. While most of her teachers are now gone, in one way or another, Bookin’ in the Big House is Pat’s remembrance of them and of the place they lived.

KEVIN E. O’DONNELL grew up in northeastern Ohio. He holds a PhD from the University of Wisconsin– Milwaukee and is professor of English at East Tennessee State University. He has published articles about nineteenth-century American magazine writing and nature writing and about environmental history in the Southeast, and he coedited, with Helen Hollingsworth, Seekers of Scenery: Travel Writing from Southern Appalachia, 1840–1900. He lives in Upper East Tennessee.

This book features fifteen notable campus forests in eleven states in the eastern United States, stretching from North Georgia, on up through the Ohio Valley and the mid-Atlantic region, into coastal Maine. The schools range from small religious colleges to state land-grant schools and Ivy League universities. The forests represent diverse ecosystems and attitudes on management: Some are left wild, notable for their tracts of old growth, while others are more contained or controlled, intended more for recreation than conservation or research. Many of these woodlands face considerable challenges; while some are protected in perpetuity, others are threatened by money troubles and development. All face ecological threats. But each forest is managed differently, reflecting the various ways it serves its campus and local community: as a place for research, recreation, and preservation.

SCOTT RANDOLPH HONEYCUTT grew up in Virginia and Tennessee. He holds a PhD in American literature from Georgia State University and is professor of English at East Tennessee State University. He has published numerous poems, including two chapbooks, This Diet of Flesh and Twelve Miles North of the Kentucky River. He lives in Upper East Tennessee.

eDIteD by erIn DUnn anD beryl gIlothWeSt Off the Coast of Paradise is the first major exhibition and publication to explore the profound impact of Ossabaw Island—an undeveloped, 26,000-acre barrier island off the coast of Savannah— on artists in the United States during the latter half of the twentieth century. The show, which opens at the Jepson Center, Telfair Museums, in Savannah, Georgia, in March 2026, focuses on a pair of revolutionary multidisciplinary residency programs known as the Ossabaw Island Project (OIP) and Genesis that ran on the island from 1961 to 1982 and their legacies in its examination of Ossabaw as a site for creative experimentation.

Taking its name from a poem written by renowned poet and former Genesis member, Henri Cole, the exhibition and publication feature the work of internationally renowned artists who either participated in the residency programs or who have spent time on Ossabaw in the years since, including Harry Bertoia, Agnes Denes, Allison Janae Hamilton, Marcy Hermansader, Suzanne Jackson, Ellen Lanyon, Doris Lee, Sally Mann, Michael Mazur, Ross McElwee, Athena Tacha, Betty Tompkins, and Anne Truitt.

Pimento Cheese with Chili Crunch makes 31/4 cups

Chili crunch makes almost everything better, including pimento cheese. Think of a crunchy mixture of pepper flakes, seeds, and crispy bits of goodness combined with oil. Now widely available in grocery stores, it’s fun to find a brand and the level of heat you like. Chili crunch has a little more texture than chili crisp, but either will work great for this recipe. I’ve never met one I didn’t like.

2 (8-ounce) blocks extra-sharp cheddar cheese 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1 (4-ounce) jar diced pimentos, undrained 1/4 cup chili crunch, well stirred

Grate the cheddar using the large holes of a box grater.

Combine the cheddar, cream cheese, mayonnaise, and pimentos in a medium mixing bowl.

Spread into a shallow serving bowl, but leave some texture so the pimento cheese isn’t smooth on top. At serving time drizzle with about 1 tablespoon of chili crunch over the pimento cheese.

Store in the refrigerator, covered with plastic wrap, for 2 days. Let sit at room temperature for 25 minutes before serving.

It’s a story of a mother and daughter, sometimes understanding each other, often not, but trying to cobble together parallel and overlapping lives. Perhaps most interesting to readers of O’Connor, or anyone interested in the biography of an author no longer able to control a public image, is the detailing of how Regina tried to direct and cultivate Flannery’s image after her death, though we get the sense she understood very little of her daughter as an artist.

John Abbot’s love of insects manifested itself in his exquisite watercolor drawings of butterflies, moths, beetles, cicadas, dragonflies, wasps, and spiders. Considered one of the finest illustrated entomological publications of its era, The Natural History of the Rarer Lepidopterous Insects of Georgia combined those watercolors with Abbot’s terse notes that described his encounters with these creatures. Born in London in 1751, Abbot journeyed to the American South in 1773 to collect and draw insects and birds for natural history collectors in Britain. Although he had had ambitions as a young man to join the ranks of London’s natural history illustrators, he never returned to Britain. Instead, Abbot lived most of his long life in Georgia, where he made thousands of watercolor drawings of insects and supplied thousands of insect specimens to his British, European, and American clients. Despite his accomplishments as a naturalist and an artist, he is little known today. Loving Insects aims to rectify this omission by detailing Abbot’s activities as a natural history artist, a specimen hunter, and a naturalist and by claiming a space for him as a major figure in the history of early American natural history.

How do well-meaning people help a community move beyond its past when confronted by those who hold ingrained stereotypes, profit from maintaining the status quo, or are filled with antipathy toward others? This book tells the story of how a Black university president tried to do just that when he led the first non-courtordered merger of an historically Black university with an historically white two-year college in Albany, Georgia.

Arthur “Art” N. Dunning came of age in the Black Belt of Alabama during the Jim Crow era. Among many pivotal experiences, he was part of a group of student athletes who helped to integrate Bear Bryant’s University of Alabama football team in 1967. The values instilled in him by his family and those in his close-knit community, together with life experiences through education and from living, working, and traveling abroad over more than forty years as an educator, shaped his approach to leading Albany State University, an HBCU, through its 2016 merger with all-white Darton State College.

The community’s reaction to the merger proved to be an extreme example of what our nation is experiencing today. The perceived threat of embracing change while racially integrating two institutions brought out painful stereotypes, racial orthodoxy, tribalism, suspicion, and conspiracy theories. It peeled away a veneer of racial harmony and exposed unhealthy patterns of behavior and entrenched beliefs held by community members of both races. Dunning shares here the hard but valuable leadership lessons learned when his race and his personal Southern history intersected with a university and city that were abruptly forced to acknowledge their own history—and were challenged to envision a different future.

A translator, educator, and anthologist of African American poetry, Pool corresponded, after World War II, with Langston Hughes, W. E. B. Du Bois, Naomi Long Madgett, Owen Dodson, Gordon Heath, and others who fostered her involvement in the Black Arts Movement, both in Britain and the United States. Though Pool was often cast as an outsider—one poet was amazed that “one so removed” was interested in the Black cause—she saw herself as part of a transatlantic struggle against oppression. For Pool, the “yellow Jew stars” the Nazis forced her to wear “were our darker skins.”

JOHN OBEE served in the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi in the 1960s and later worked at the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, during which time he obtained his law degree. A former adjunct professor of law at Michigan State University, he has lectured nationally and internationally on discrimination issues.

The literature of the civil rights movement is replete with stories about the major actors in the movement, including, for example, Martin Luther King, but there is little focus on the MacArthur Cottons of the era: the young Black men and women who at great risk to their physical and mental health chose to become involved in the movement when so many others chose not to. Without these young Black people there would have been no movement, and what was accomplished with the Civil Rights Acts of the 1960s would never have happened.

This was particularly true in Mississippi, the most repressive of all fifty states, and one that had sponsored state terrorism to ensure that white supremacy reigned supreme. Despite having no real reason to believe that change could happen, MacArthur Cotton and those like him believed that they had to act. In Cotton’s case, his actions were in the tradition of his activist family, and he relates his involvement with many of the important figures in the Mississippi movement, such as Medgar Evers and Fannie Lou Hamer.

Importantly, he also honors others like him, who are largely unknown to history, such as the Greenes and McGees in Greenwood, who were waging their own war against their oppressive state. While having been imprisoned many times and having lived in a constant state of terror, Cotton persisted as a foot soldier in a war and, as with all veterans of wars, was left with emotional and psychological scars.

Despite the toll that it took on him as a person, however, he remains a committed activist to this day.

Deserter Declarations explores nearly two hundred letters from Confederate deserters to Governor Zebulon B. Vance from 1861 to 1865. It shares the voices of deserters or friends and family petitioning on their behalf. Browning helps us understand who deserters were and lets us tease out some of the factors that motivated soldiers to leave their posts. These letters add vivid specificity to the often-contentious debates over deserters in the Confederacy and shed light on the changing attitudes of deserters over the course of the war. North Carolina is an excellent case study for desertion, as the state had the highest number of deserters. The Old North State also represents a microcosm of the entire South’s geography and demography.

She responded to the suffering of war, witnessed medical care in evolution, and everywhere abetted the end of chattel slavery through aid and advocacy.

GEORGE RADICS is a senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore. After receiving his PhD in sociology from the National University of Singapore (NUS), he earned a juris doctor with a concentration in Asian law from the University of Washington and worked for the Supreme Court of Guam for two years. In the first half of the twentieth century, the United States attempted to build a colony in the Philippines in its own image— one fraught with racist notions of what it means to be civilized, developed, and worthy of self-rule. These imported notions of race and modernity left a profound imprint on the nation. More recently, we have seen a menacing rise of Islamic “terrorism,” political polarization, populism, xenophobia, and isolationism.

Conventional wisdom has attributed this rise to a “failed state” or economic insecurity and cultural backlash. In this book, however, George Radics explains this forgotten part of U.S. history with emotions as a driving force behind social action. The Philippines is currently experiencing the longest-running Muslim-Christian conflict in the modern world and an increasingly anti-Western populist government. By unpacking the role of emotions from the American colonial period to the present, Emotional Filipinos blurs the line between American colonizer and Muslim-Filipino “terrorist,” highlighting the lasting effects of America’s footprint in Southeast Asia. Volunteering is typically thought of as an act of altruism, yet there are power dynamics embedded in volunteer-service recipient relationships, especially when volunteers operate from privileged positions. Following six grassroots homeless service organizations in St. Louis, Missouri, Matthew Schneider unpacks the tensions between race, class, urban space, and volunteerism. Volunteers are well intentioned and provide vital, life-saving services. However, Serving the Street explores how many of these same volunteer groups helped to reproduce racialized stigma and stereotypes about poverty, homelessness, and marginal urban space through volunteer practices that bordered on “poverty tourism.” If our goal is to make communities more inclusive and equitable, this book suggests a need for greater self-reflection, even among wellintentioned, social-justice-oriented volunteers.

His research on fugitive slaves in Georgia and Maryland included the creation of the Fugitive Slave Database, a unique digital archive preserving one of the largest collections of fugitive slave advertisements published between 1790 and 1810.

In Pursuit of Freedom is a pioneering study of advertisements for fugitive slaves published in the early American South. Recovering, reconstructing, and reimagining stories that fugitive slaves compelled enslavers to advertise in print when they fled, the book unearths articulations of agency and expressions of resistance by enslaved persons. Drawing on a database of nearly six thousand advertisements, Wallace challenges the historiographical tendency to interpret escape as a rebellious response to the conditions of enslavement by emphasizing the agency behind freedomseekers’ decision to escape. In Pursuit of Freedom explores the complexities of fugitivity—a phenomenon that Wallace defines as a “transitionary moment” in a wider freedom struggle as fugitive slaves distanced themselves, physically and psychologically, from bondage—in the Upper South (Maryland) and Lower South (Georgia). Drawing from an extensive archive of convention minutes, press coverage, and writings by Black activists, Bourhis-Mariotti shows how free people of color used these conventions not only to protest racial injustice but to build a collective political identity and formulate strategies to claim their rightful place as American citizens. Indeed, the conventions functioned as collaborative spaces where diverse voices debated, strategized, and forged solidarity across regional and (trans)national boundaries. These animated discussions gave rise to a diasporic political and social consciousness, shaping the Black community as both a social and political group in the decades leading up to the Civil War. The study reveals how strategies—from respectability to emigrationism—evolved in response to shifting local and federal contexts and how Black activists engaged with American and foreign people of color. Importantly, it challenges the view that Black emigrationism undermined civil rights efforts, positioning it instead as a foundational expression of Black transnationalism.

Ultimately, the book restores the conventions to their rightful place at the heart of early Black activism and political thought.

By 1865, more than 750,000 enslaved Africans had arrived in Cuba, making it the leading Spanish American slave colony and the epicenter of slavery in the Atlantic. At the height of the global tobacco economy, tens of thousands of these slaves labored in Pinar del Río, Cuba—a region devoted exclusively to tobacco cultivation. These enslaved people were responsible for exporting a record fourteen million pounds of raw tobacco per year, leaving one contemporary writer to argue that no agricultural economy produced more value, in proportion to the capital and labor employed, than tobacco. While tobacco was second only to sugar in export significance and in the number of rural enslaved, tobacco was unequivocally as dependent on enslaved labor as the more infamous export. Despite Cuba being one of the first-introduced and last-abolished slave societies in the Atlantic world, this slave economy remains largely ignored, existing outside the considerable and recent scholarship on the region.

Cuban Tobacco in the Age of Second Slavery directly refutes the myth of tobacco as a small-scale, family, and free-labor crop promoted by both contemporary and current scholarship. It also rejects the prevailing use of sugar as the model for epitomizing Cuban slavery—a paradigm that obscures the full measure of diversity in this region and era. Arguing tobacco was more counterpart than counterpoint to sugar, Cuban Tobacco in the Age of Second Slavery focuses on the development of tobacco as a plantation economy— and the exponential increase in forced labor supporting it—to suggest an alternative narrative in understanding both Cuban and Atlantic slavery in this period.

Examining key sites of activism over recent years— campaigning for a people’s park, upgrading an informal settlement, the “national-popular” movement of Kirchnerism, and struggles over urban redevelopment—speaks to pressing democratic debates around autonomy and self-management, populism and clientelism, and democratic innovation and “participatory articulations.”

Through the lens of space and geography, this book offers a relational analysis of popular participation, working between multiple neighborhoods and scales, across different struggles, and between the streets and political institutions, activists, and politicians. In doing so, Halvorsen proposes a dual understanding of the territorialization of democracy: a reflection of the changing political conditions shaping today’s critics and a tool for assessing how democratic practices emerge from specific, grounded struggles over space.

RAYMOND PETTIT is a researcher committed to a multidisciplinary investigation of the past. His work has straddled anthropology and archaeology for more than two decades, including studies of Icelandic settlement patterns as part of the CUNY Hunter College Zooarchaeology Laboratory and human rights investigations with the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team for cases such as the Cadereyta and Ayotzinapa massacres in Mexico. In the last decade, he has also been active in fighting for worker rights, including at the Cincinnati Interfaith Worker Center and Restaurant Opportunities Centers United.

He currently works as director of partnerships at Possibility Labs, an organization he helped found in 2020, providing flexible infrastructure for building a solidarity economy that works for everyone and the environment.

As the first major U.S. urban center located west of the Appalachian Mountains, Cincinnati depended on the Ohio River for its early development, eventually becoming one of the country’s iconic river cities, with incredible growth during the golden age of steamboats. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, the river had lost its shine and became known as the “poor man’s highway.” The twentieth century ushered in a period of incredible activity concentrated on the Ohio River. Local elites began a series of infrastructural projects focused on transforming both the Ohio River and Cincinnati, bringing to the fore a new kind of river city.

Unlike many water management projects that wanted to tame rivers, Cincinnati elites sought to build a sustained relationship with the Ohio River. For its part, the Ohio River actively took part in these projects, becoming a major contributor to the successful realization of elite objectives around urban growth, public health, and white supremacy.
