A special thanks to Paul Lavender of the Hal Leonard Corporation for his guidance offered in the planning of tonight’s concert, and especially for providing the unpublished manuscripts of selections initially created exclusively for the United States Marine Band (American Journey, Raiders March, Men of Yorktown, Flight to Neverland, Jurassic Park, and Princess Leia’s Theme.
PROGRAM NOTES
John Williams is a renowned American composer with a career spanning five decades. Shortly after moving to Los Angeles with his family in 1948, Williams would study piano and composition at the University of California, and after a short time serving in the Air Force, he would return to New York to attend The Juilliard School of Music. He’s known for his exceptional work in both film and concert music. Williams has served as music director for the Boston Pops Orchestra and has strong ties with major orchestras like the Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and Los Angeles Philharmonic. He’s received numerous accolades, including the National Medal of Arts, Kennedy Center Honor, Olympic Order, and multiple Academy, Grammy, Emmy, and Golden Globe Awards.
PROGRAM NOTES Williams has composed music for over a hundred films, collaborating extensively with director Steven Spielberg on classics such as Schindler’s List, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park. He’s also known for his iconic scores for Star Wars and Harry Potter films. In addition to his film work, Williams has composed symphonies and concertos and has contributed to television themes. He’s an esteemed figure in the world of music and holds honorary degrees from numerous universities. John Williams remains a distinguished and influential voice in American music, with a legacy that continues to resonate worldwide.
Olympic Fanfare and Theme (1984) The Olympic Games continue to fascinate and inspire each one of us -- with every presentation of the Games, we experience that complete dedication and unshakable will to persevere that typifies the goal of each competitor. The human spirit soars, and we strive for the vest within us. These are the qualities that we seek to capture, describe and preserve through music, and it has been my great honor to contribute Olympic Fanfare and Theme to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The Men of Yorktown (1976) The Battle of Midway was a turning point in the Pacific Theater of World War II, and the focus of the 1976 film Midway. The Men of Yorktown characterizes a crew that had sustained heavy damages in The Battle of the Coral Sea, before being hastily repaired and sent back into action at Midway.
Catch Me If You Can (2002) Haunting and captivating describes John Williams’ score to the hit movie Catch Me If You Can. The music features an alto sax soloist and a wide variety of unique percussion and scoring devices. This arrangement includes the most striking musical themes from the soundtrack in a concert setting.
Raiders March (1981) Raiders of the Lost Ark took theaters by storm in 1981 and Williams’ soundtrack featured a rousing march that eventually served as the main theme of the entire series. Raiders March has since become an instantly recognizable musical portrayal of the iconic adventurer.
The Adventures of Mutt (2008) In speaking about the experience of composing for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, John Williams shared “it has consistently offered me a wild and joyous ride.” This accurately describes The Adventures of Mutt with its relentless energy and spirit of fun.
Princess Leia’s Theme (1977) Princess Leia’s Theme is first heard in Episode IV: A New Hope when Darth Vader captures Princess Leia. This lyrical theme is present in the original Star Wars trilogy, and appears in the prequel and sequel trilogies as well. Williams utilizes this theme like a Wagnerian leitmotif throughout the films; it is at once elegant, brave, and regal, epitomizing the central heroine of the series.
ARTISTIC TEAM BIOGRAPHIES
Scherzo for X-Wings (2015) In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, audiences hear Scherzo for X-Wings as Poe Dameron leads a team of X-Wings in an assault on Starkiller Base. The piece incorporates elements of the main title theme and the main thematic theme from the Force.
The Flight to Neverland (1991) The Flight to Neverland is a collage of music from the soundtrack to Steven Spielberg’s Hook. It overflows with feelings of fairy tale magic, pirate adventures, the freedom of flight, and childhood wonder. As Spielberg reunites us with the timeless characters of Peter Pan, Wendy, and Captain Hook, Williams captivates audiences with his Oscar-nominated score.
American Journey Mvt. III Popular Entertainment (1999) American Journey is a concert suite derived from the musical score that accompanies Steven Spielberg’s short film The Unfinished Journey. The full fifteen-minute suite consists of six movements, each of which deals with a specific aspect of American history or culture portrayed in the film. Popular Entertainment is characterized by light-hearted syncopation giving homage to Aaron Copland’s Rodeo ballet suite.
Jurassic Park (1993) I created a theme for Jurassic Park itself, which could be used in several different places, and when orchestrated differently, it could convey the beauty of what [the visitors] were seeing at first. So when the passengers in the Jeep pass by the group of dinosaurs for the first time, this is the theme I used. Instead of a sense of fascination, I believe the theme conveyed the feelings of the dinosaur researchers in the Jeep and their overwhelming happiness and excitement at what they were encountering. Nimbus 2000 (2000) Originally composed and debuted in the original Harry Potter series, Nimbus 2000 has become wildly popular in its association with the movies. Written in ode to the main character’s new ‘broom’ and his intense flight through and around Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Force Awakens: Jedi Steps and Finale (2015) From the blockbuster 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Force Awakens: Jedi Steps and Finale features the dramatic music used at the climax of the film, followed by the explosive Finale.
PROGRAM NOTES NICHOLAS ENRICO WILLIAMS is a Professor of Music and serves as the Director of Bands at the University of Georgia, where he coordinates one of the country’s largest and most comprehensive university band programs, conducts the University of Georgia Wind Ensemble, and oversees the graduate wind band conducting area. Prior to his time in Athens, he was the Director of Wind Bands at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (Melbourne, Australia). Before venturing
to Australia, Dr. Williams flourished for sixteen years as the Assistant Director of Wind Studies, the Conductor of the Wind Ensemble, Brass Band, and Concert Band, as well as the Director of Athletic Bands at the University of North Texas. For a decade, he was the Conductor of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra Wind Symphony and continues to be a frequent guest conductor of the Dallas Winds (formerly Dallas Wind Symphony), one of America’s few professional civic wind bands. Professor Williams earned the Bachelor of Music (music education), MM (performance-conducting), and DMA (conducting) degrees from the University of North Texas. Dr. Williams is active in Australia, Canada, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the United States as a conductor, clinician, adjudicator, consultant, and arranger; his arrangements and transcriptions for wind band, percussion ensembles, drum corps, and school pageantry ensembles are performed by outstanding organizations throughout the world. A member of the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs), he is a sought-after recording session producer, associate producer, editor, and conductor, having been involved with numerous CDs and DVDs on the Klavier, Mark Records, and GIA labels, as well as UNT projects, including the 2019 worldwide release of “FIESTAS” by the University of North Texas Wind Ensemble. In addition to his work in the recording arts, he has written several conductor study guides published in the multivolume series of Teaching Music Through Performance in Band. He is a primary consultant of Women of Influence in Contemporary Music and is an honorary member of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity for women. His professional affiliations include the Georgia Music Educators Association, Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Phi Beta Mu, an international bandmasters fraternity. DR. BRANDON QUARLES is the Lecturer of Saxophone and Allied Areas at the University of Georgia where he directs the saxophone studio, directs and conducts the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, and teaches a local music history course “Music in Athens.” He was one of the founding members of ~Nois, serving as the organization’s Executive Director and soprano saxophonist from 2016 to 2021. Dr. Quarles has performed with a variety of ensembles including Eighth Blackbird, Ensemble Dal Niente, ensemble vim, the Grant Park Symphony, My Brightest Diamond, and the Athens Hip Hop Harmonic, among others. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance with a cognate in music theory from Northwestern University along with the Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from Northwestern and the University of Georgia, respectively. He has had the honor of studying the saxophone with Clint Schmitt, Connie Frigo, and Taimur Sullivan.
