Be like the bird (sung in English)
Original French poem by Victor Hugo (1802-1885)
Music by Abbie Betinis (b. 1944)
Soyez comme l’oiseau, posé pour un instant sur des rameaux frêles, qui sent ployer la branche -- et chante -- sachant qu’il a des ailes.
Be like the bird that, pausing in her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her -- and sings -- knowing she hath wings.
Ave Verum Corpus
Composed by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963)
Ave, verum corpus Christi Hail, true Body
natum ex Maria Virgine, Born of the Virgin Mary,
Ave Regina Caelorum
Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704)
Ave, Regina Caelorum, Hail, O Queen of Heaven.
Ave, Domina Angelorum: Hail, O Lady of Angels.
Salve, radix, salve, porta
Hail! Thou root, hail! Thou gate
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:
from whom unto the world, a light has arisen:
Crossing the Bar
Poetry by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)
Music by Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947)
Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness or farewell,
vere passum, immolatum having truly suffered, sacrificed in cruce pro homine. on the cross for mankind,
Gaude, Virgo gloriosa, Rejoice, O glorious Virgin,
Super omnes speciosa, Lovely beyond all others,
Vale, o valde decora, Farewell, most beautiful maiden,
Et pro nobis Christum exora. And pray for us to Christ.
When I embark; For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
Spes (Hope)
Mia Makaropp (b. 1970)
Quis talis, ut sapiens est?
Who is like the wise?
Et quis cognovit solutionem rerum?
Who knows the explanation of things?
Biekka oapmi lean
I belong to the wind,
muhto liikká ealán
But I live,
ja dat lea vissa eallima dárkkuhus
Maybe that is the meaning of life.
Ealán odne dál ja dás
I live here and now…
ja just dat lea madoheapme de in eali sat ihttin
I won’t be alive tomorrow.
Ozdolu idu
nu ja máid dasto
That is the way— and so what
Non est in hominis potestate
As no one has power
dominari super spiritum
Over the wind to contain it,
nec cohibere spiritum
So no one has power
nec habet potestatem supra diem mortis
Over the time of their death.
sapientia hominis illuminat vultum eius
A person’s wisdom brightens their face
et durities faciei illius commutatur
And changes its hard appearance.
Bulgarian Folk Song arranged by Philip Koutev (1903-1982)
A children’s song about a many colored cart bumping and jumping down the road.
Ozdolu idu sareni kolca.
Ozdolu idu sareni kolca.

Media Vita
Written by Notker Balbulus (c.840-901) arranged by Michael McGlynn (b. 1964)Media vita in morte sumus
In the midst of life we are in death
Quem quaerimus adjutorem nisite Domine
What helper do we seek except you, O Lord
Qui pro peccatis nostris
You who for our sins
Sancte Deus Sancte fortis Holy God, holy and powerful
Sancte misericor salvator O holy compassionate savior
Arrow
Jocely Hagen (b. 1980)
The aiming:
you aim at the center of the eye you gather all the landscape around the single point: if a bird-ribbon flies across the edge if a cloud teases the sun you gather all to the one point
there is only one
The letting go: you are let go you are no longer grasped empty air surrounds you you no longer lean against the bow
Amare mortis ne tradas nos
Do not give us over to the harshness of death
In te speraverunt patres nostris
In you, our fathers placed their hopes
Speaverunt et liberati eos. They placed their hopes and you freed them.
your hock is free you are free you are in danger remember the center all of you remembers the center
The flight: you are moving along an invisible track (you make it yourself) straight as your spine is straight.
Two Latin Motets: In monte Oliveti, Tristis est anima mea Giovanni Battista Martini (1706-1784)
In monte Oliveti oravit ad patrem
On the Mount of Olives he prayed to his Father
Pater si fieri potest transeat a me calix iste.
“Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me.
Spiritus quidem promptus est caro autem infirma
The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak.
Tristis est anime mea usque ad mortem:
Sorrowful is my soul even unto death.
No Time
Arranged Susan Brumfield
Rise, oh, fathers rise: let’s go meet ‘em in the skies. We will hear the angels singing in the morning.
Oh, I really do believe that, just before the end of time, We will hear the angels singing in that morning.
Rise, oh, mothers rise; let’s go meet ‘em in the skies. We will hear the angels singing in that morning.
Oh, I really do believe that just before the end of time,
Vive L’Amour
Arranged by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw
Let every good fellow now join in a song,
Vive la compagnie!
Success to each other and pass it along,
Vive la compagnie!
Vive l’amour,
Vive la compagnie!
And raise up your voices in close harmony.
Vive la compagnie!
Should time time or occasion compel us to part, Vive la compagnie!
These days shall forever enlighten the heart.
Sustinete hic et vigilate mecum
Stay here, and watch me.
Nunc videbitis turban quae cicumdabit me
Now you shall see the mob that will surround me.
Vos fugam capietis, et go vadam immorali pro vobis. You shall take flight, and I shall go to be sacrificed for you.
We will hear the angels singing in that morning. No time to tarry here, no time to wait for you. No time to tarry here, for I’m on my journey home.
Brothers, oh, fare ye well. Sisters, oh, fare ye well, for I’m on my journey home.
Vive l’amour, Vive la compagnie.
Let every old bachelor fill up his glass, And drink to the health of his favorite lass.
Let every old married man drink to his wife, The joy of his bosom and comfort of life.
Vice l’amour, Vive la compagnie!
