Presented as part of our Thursday Scholarship Series The Thursday Scholarship Series began in 1980 and continues the tradition of “Music Appreciation Programs” started by Hugh Hodgson in the 1930s. Proceeds from ticket sales to these concerts and contributions made by you are the primary means through which School of Music scholarship funds are raised each year.

Bailey Hume is an Australian clarinetist and saxophonist. Trained in classical performance, his experience spans a diversity of genres, including classical, jazz, contemporary, and commercial.

Bailey has performed in various settings including orchestras, big bands, theatre pits, and as studio musician, recording extensively for the University of Melbourne, and for the Australian Army Band (Melbourne), as principal clarinet. Bailey’s recordings are featured in the Percy Grainger Museum.

Bailey received his Undergraduate degree from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, and he is currently working towards his master’s degree at the University of Georgia.

Min-Chen Lee is a passionate and versatile pianist from Taiwan. As a soloist, she regularly gives recitals and has performed in Taiwan, Austria, Australia, Korea, and the United States. She was recently invited to perform at Steinway Hall in New York City and at the opening concert of the Yilan International Art Festival. She made her concerto debut with the National Chinese Orchestra of Taiwan, performing A River in Spring by Xu Jinxin. She also won the Tainan National University of the Arts Concerto Competition and performed the Grieg Piano Concerto with the TNNUA orchestra.

Min-Chen is also an active chamber musician who recently performed at the Bowdoin International Music Festival. She has worked with the UGA University Chorus and the UGA Opera Theatre. She is currently studying in the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of Georgia under the tutelage of Dr. Evgeny Rivkin.

Sean Smith is an undergraduate violin performance major studying with Dr. Michael Heald. As a fourth-year student, he will graduate in May 2024 and plans to pursue graduate music studies.

Beginning his music degree during the pandemic introduced him to his first student chamber ensemble, sparking a love of chamber music. Smith attended the Aspen Music Festival in 2023 and has participated in many student ensembles during his time at UGA. Sean hopes to turn his musical career to orchestral performance after completing his graduate studies. He would like to thank his supportive parents, family, friends, and mentors for inspiring him to become the musician he is today.

CONCERTO COMPETITION WINNER BIOGRAPHIES Originally from Atlanta, Aly Soriano is an experienced solo pianist, chamber musician and teacher.

She has attended a variety of festivals including the Texas State International Piano Festival and the Paris International Summer Sessions, as well as chamber programs such as SongFest and the Collaborative Piano Institute. As an active performer and advocate for new music, Aly frequently premieres new works and has played in the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. She recently received the Contemporary Fellowship for the 2023 Atlantic Music Festival, and is now a member of the newly founded Atlanta Contemporary Music Collective (ATLCMC). Aly earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Florida State University with Dr. David Kalhous, and received her master’s degree at the University of Georgia with Dr. Liza Stepanova, with whom she is currently pursuing her doctorate.

Xiaoqian Sun began her musical journey at the age of six in her native China, Anhui Province. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from the prestigious Shanghai Conservatory of Music and came to New York City in 2019 to pursue a master’s degree at the Mannes School of Music under the tutelage of Dr. JY Song. While at Mannes, she was invited to perform at the ELC Performance Workshop Recital at the Glass Theater and gave her first solo recital in the United States. Xiaoqian is currently in her second year of DMA studies at UGA working with Dr. Liza Stepanova. At UGA, she has performed in masterclasses for acclaimed pianists Mikhail Voskressensky and Isata Kanneh-Mason, and enjoys teaching an international group of students through the UGA Community Music School.

ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR BIOGRAPHY Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Nicholas Han made his conducting debut with The Music & More SummerFest Music Festival in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He earned his Undergraduate degree in Violin Performance at Central Washington University in 2020, and his Masters in Orchestral Conducting at Oklahoma State University in 2023. In 2022, he obtained the position as assistant conductor for the Oklahoma Chamber Symphony and was the Apprentice Conductor for the Oklahoma City Philharmonic in May 2023. He is currently pursuing his Doctoral of Music Arts degree at University of Georgia Athens. Nicholas also obtained the position as Cover Conductor for the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra in October 2023. His recent conducting engagements include guest conducting LA Conducting Workshop and Competition Orchestra and Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra.

Nicholas, over the summer of 2022, was selected as one of 3 winners for the ICWC (International Conducting Workshop and Competition) Competition in Atlanta, Georgia. He was also selected as a 1st place winner and received the Audience Prize in the LA Conducting Workshop and Competition in Garden Grove, California. His principal mentors include Nikolas Caoile, Thomas Dickey, Alexander Mickelthwate, and Mark Cedel.
