Endowed and Named Fellowships The University of Georgia Foundation Fellowship was created in 1972 by UGA Foundation trustees to enrich the educational experience of outstanding undergraduates. The Fellowship is supported by multiple endowments and a partnership with the Stamps Scholars Program. The Endowed and Named Foundation Fellowships provide an annual scholarship stipend for each Foundation Fellow.

Letters FROM THE PRESIDENT The Foundation Fellowship program is the University of Georgia’s premier scholarship program, offering extraordinary experiences to a unique community of undergraduate scholars. Foundation Fellows and Ramsey Scholars benefit from the vibrant campus life and educational opportunities that only a major research university can provide while receiving all of the academic and personal support of a small, elite college. From mentoring relationships with world-renowned faculty to travel-study and internships across the U.S. and abroad, the outstanding education they gain at UGA prepares them to become leaders in whatever fields they choose. As President of the University of Georgia, I am extremely proud of our Foundation Fellows and Ramsey Scholars and appreciate all that they bring to our community of excellence.

David S. Williams, Meigs Distinguished Professor of Religion, led Honors at UGA from 2004 to January 2022 and served as the inaugural dean of the Jere W. Morehead Honors College. Dr. Williams oversaw a dramatic expansion in the range and quality of learning experiences offered to students. Thanks in large part to his leadership and vision, the Morehead Honors College is widely recognized today as a national leader in student opportunity and achievement.

Overview

About the Foundation Fellowship and Ramsey Honors Scholarship The Jere W. Morehead Honors College administers the university’s top academic scholarships—the Foundation Fellowship, UGA’s premier academic scholarship, and the Ramsey Honors Scholarship, one of the highest merit-based awards.

The Foundation Fellowship was created in 1972 by UGA Foundation trustees to enrich the educational experience of outstanding undergraduates. Fellows receive an annual stipend, research and academic conference grants, and individual travel-study grants. Fellows participate in a postfirst-year Maymester at the University of Oxford and spring group travel-study.

The Ramsey Honors Scholarship was created in 2000 by UGA Foundation trustees under the name of the university’s most generous individual benefactor, the late Bernard Ramsey (BS ’37). Ramsey Scholars have been selected through the Foundation Fellowship application process and receive an annual stipend and travel-study grants and participate in spring break trips. In 2021, the Ramsey Scholarship was merged with the Foundation Fellowship.

Fellows and Ramseys enjoy mentoring from professors who have matched interests, peer mentoring, dinner seminars and book discussions with faculty and alumni, cultural events, group travel, the Fellows Library in Moore Hall, and off-campus retreats that promote a sense of community.

Foundation Fellowship benefits, 2021–2022 • First-year housing supplement of $614 for in-state students, $1,228 for out-of-state students • Annual stipend for in-state students: $12,650 plus the Zell Miller Scholarship (currently $9,790 per year) • Annual stipend for out-of-state students: $20,900 plus an out-of-state tuition waiver (currently $19,040 per year) • Three fully funded spring travel-study programs (first through third years). First-year Fellows always travel to New York City and Washington, D.C., and then participate in international trips in their second and third years. This spring, Fellows traveled to Colombia, Greece, Morocco, and Thailand.

Recently, they have also traveled to Argentina, Bali, Costa Rica, Japan, South Korea, Tanzania, Uruguay, and Vietnam.

• Fully funded summer study abroad program to the University of Oxford valued at $8,500 • Individual travel-study grants up to a cumulative total of $9,000 (related to academic and professional goals, can be combined with semester stipends for travel-study for semester or academic year) • Research and academic conference grants up to a cumulative total of $1,750 • Special seminars and book discussions with UGA and visiting professors • Faculty, peer, and alumni mentoring • Twice-a-year retreats • Participation in a community of scholars who stimulate each other’s intellectual and personal development

The Jere W. Morehead Honors College

T

he Morehead Honors College provides its 2,700 undergraduates with the resources to make the most of their higher education experience—including 300 Honors classes a year with an average class size of 17 students, expert advice from Honors and faculty advisors, independent research opportunities, mentoring, internships, lunchbox lectures and book discussions with faculty, and the Myers Hall residential community.

The college offers numerous opportunities for local, national, and global civic engagement and career development—including internship placements in Washington, D.C., New York, and Savannah; the Corsair Society, which mentors undergraduates pursuing careers in banking and finance, management consulting, and the technology sector; the Roosevelt Institute at UGA, a student-run public policy think tank; Honors Student Council; MATHCOUNTS Outreach; the Association of Women in Science; and the Thomas Lay After-School Tutoring Program.

Fellows and Ramseys can also access Morehead Honors College staff members, including Jessica Hunt, the assistant dean and director of scholarships, who provides important counsel for a variety of pursuits— including drafting personal statements, resumes, and cover letters for job, scholarship, and postgraduate study applications.

Through the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities, students work with faculty on projects that reach beyond classroom learning and gain researchrelated experience needed for graduate or professional schools. CURO is open to all UGA undergraduates interested in pursuing research ranging from the humanities to social sciences to STEM disciplines.

The mix made for quality conversation and taught me how differing intellectual perspectives can balance into a special harmony. I spent the past four years in homeless services, tech, and private equity; conversations in FFR helped me transfer knowledge among these disparate fields and to find my voice at their intersection.”

“There are two reasons why I could spend a summer working on the spread of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika as the Puerto Rico Vector Control Unit’s first intern. The first was the funding and support from the Fellowship, which allowed me to take an unpaid, summer-long internship. The second was my amazing UGA mentor who connected me to the director of the program, places to stay, and even took me out to dinner while visiting over the summer.

It’s hard to describe the feeling of finally doing the thing you always wanted to do, and realizing you love doing it, but that is the experience you get with the Fellowship.”

“The support of the Ramsey Scholarship and Honors has been pivotal to me as a student with a variety of professional and academic interests. As a freshman, the Honors College connected me to foreign language conversation groups and the Medicine-in-Literature book discussion group. Living in Myers Hall with other FFR led to my involvement with University Housing, where I have now worked for several years. The mentorship of older students, facilitated through FFR events, encouraged me to branch out and seek research, community involvement, and leadership opportunities. The financial support provided by the program made it possible to complete an MPH in biostatistics while finishing up my undergraduate requirements. I was able to explore my interests in medicine, public health, statistics, language learning, and more.”

International Recognition

Gates Cambridge Scholar Claire Bunn Foundation Fellow and Stamps Scholar Claire Bunn will continue her studies in lung biology this fall as one of 23 Americans selected for the 2022 class of Gates Cambridge Scholars.

The scholarship fully funds postgraduate study and research in any subject at the University of Cambridge in England.

In addition, Claire was one of six students nationwide who were awarded the Phi Kappa Phi Marcus L. Urann Fellowship, which carries a $20,000 stipend for graduate study.

Claire graduated in May with a degree in genetics. A 2021 Goldwater Scholar, she devoted much of her time at UGA to researching protein kinases, using bioinformatic and biochemical approaches with Natarajan Kannan, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology. She also worked as a campus tour guide through the UGA Visitors Center.

In fall 2020, Claire began researching developmental lung biology, working remotely with Dr. Jennifer Sucre, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a Foundation Fellow alumna, conducting digital imaging analysis of the lung tissue samples of preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a form of chronic lung disease that affects newborns. She quickly gained an interest in research at the intersection of developmental and cancer biology— topics she will continue to study this fall.

At Cambridge, she will pursue a Ph.D. in the Department of Physiology, Development, and Neuroscience. Her goal is to investigate the cellular mechanisms governing embryonic lung development and tissue maintenance.

“Through this research, I hope to deepen our understanding of fundamental biological processes to guide

personalized medical therapies that are accessible to all populations,” she said.

As an aspiring physician-scientist, Claire also researched public health in the Mississippi Delta region as a Delta Scholar and wrote for the Boston Congress of Public Health.

Her UGA involvement includes serving as an Honors teaching assistant, co-president of the Honors Student Council in the Morehead Honors College, head coach for UGA MATHCOUNTS Outreach, and peer mentor for Destination Dawgs.

National Recognition

Goldwater Scholar Elise Karinshak Foundation Fellow Elise Karinshak is among 417 undergraduates across the nation to be recognized as 2022 Barry Goldwater Scholars, earning the highest undergraduate award of its type for the fields of mathematics, engineering and the natural sciences. Elise is majoring in data science and marketing and is pursuing a minor in studio art.

Her studies focus on data mining and media analytics, and she plans to pursue a PhD in data science and a research career at the intersection of data science and AI-mediated communication, analyzing systems that can generate, augment or modify content to achieve communication goals.

She aims to develop data and modeling techniques to improve socially impactful communications efforts, such as public health messaging, and reduce disinformation in the digital environment.

Since 2020, Elise has studied how messages are shared and altered on social media, conducting research with Yan Jin, a professor and assistant department head for public relations in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

She received a CURO research award in 2020 to support her work and has presented her research at international communications conferences in Austria, Denmark, and France.

The first undergraduate invited to participate in the Grady College’s Crisis Communication Coalition Research Group, Elise collaborates with doctoral students to develop projects analyzing messaging in health, political, social and organizational crises. She has also worked as a research intern in the Stanford Social Media Lab, analyzing applications of large language models in public health messaging.

Elise is co-founder and co-president of CodeHub, which encourages collaborative and hands-on exploration of coding; co-president of the Paw Print Agency, a studentrun advertising and public relations agency serving local nonprofits; co-president of the Honors Student Council; and a leadership fellow in the Terry College of Business. Boren Scholars

With a record number of eight undergraduates selected as Boren Scholars this spring, the University of Georgia ranks third in the nation on the list of top-performing institutions for Boren Scholarships for 2022. These students, including two Foundation Fellows, will receive funding to study critical languages abroad in exchange for a year of federal service.

Natalie Navarrete Natalie Navarrete is a rising fourth-year Foundation Fellow majoring in international affairs, Russian, and Spanish and minoring in Latin American and Caribbean studies. For her Boren year, she will study at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where the UGA Russian Overseas Flagship Capstone provides a nine-month immersive program.

Leah Whitmoyer Leah Whitmoyer is a rising third-year Foundation Fellow majoring in biological science who will use the award to study Arabic for a semester at the University of Jordan in Amman through the CET program. Additionally, she will pursue a directed research course at the University of Jordan in the Water, Energy, and Environment Center to analyze sustainable water management methods.

At UGA, Rosa was a debater in the Phi Kappa Literary Society and is using that experience to help students with public speaking in English.

Foundation Fellow Emma Traynor graduated in May with degrees in applied mathematics and international affairs and a minor in Spanish. She will be a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at IES Antonio Fraguas Forges in Madrid, Spain, where she will also facilitate the Global Classrooms program, which includes participation in Model UN competitions and teaches public speaking, research, and writing skills in English.

We are studying how to develop parenting assessments that better include the experiences of racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse parents, so I’ve gotten to recruit and interview parents across the nation and discuss their various parenting styles with the intention of improving systems for parents like them in the future. Dr. Shaffer and Violeta Rodriguez have been nothing but immensely supportive, and I am so honored to have learned from and worked beside them.”

“In the spring of 2022, I took elementary Tajiki as part of UGA’s Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant program under Prof. Manizha Datlatova.

The Fulbright FLTA program gives students an exposure to languages and cultures that are not easily accessible, and it brings highly qualified and passionate educators to the university. During my three and a half months of intensive education, I have been able to reach a lower intermediate conversational level, and now have the means to learn the Tajiki language independently. I have also gained a deep cultural understanding of Tajikistan and Central Asia, a region that I was always interested in but knew little about.”

ROBYN ANZULIS Fourth-year Foundation Fellow majoring in economics and international affairs “Every summer throughout college, I returned to my internship at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Maryland. Interning there added context to many of the opportunities I pursued at UGA. Sophomore year, I joined the Richard B. Russell Security Leadership Program and conducted research on security threats to submarine telecommunication cables, a project inspired by a presentation I had seen at my internship. I was able to apply coursework in data science and theoretical economics to the work I was doing every summer. And taking classes with the UGA Institute for Leadership Advancement has made me a more effective employee and led me to take risks. I have greatly benefitted from integrating my education and my work in meaningful and unique ways.”

Fourth-year Foundation Fellow majoring in political science and public relations “I found my second home on The Hill when I moved to D.C. in May 2021. I interned with the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture – writing speeches, crafting op-eds, and photographing congressional hearings. It was an experience that satisfied my inner voracious reader, made me an even better writer, avid consumer of media, and wannabe political pundit. It also forged the path for my future career in public affairs communications. The opportunity to live, learn, and work alongside our nation’s elected officials wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Fellowship. Both financially and educationally, the Foundation Fellowship empowered and supported me while I found my voice in Washington.”

GARRETT WILLIAMS Fourth-year Ramsey Scholar majoring in economics and finance “The Foundation Fellows & Ramseys Program supported me as I navigated different career opportunities. My interests ran the gamut – from media & entertainment to education to economic research to finance. When I became interested in pursuing management consulting, I was instantly put in touch with several FFR alumni in the field. The summer after junior year, I interned at Bain & Company in their private equity group. I did deep dives into different industries, conducting primary research to support private equity funds making multi-billion-dollar acquisitions. I built a consumer survey to assess the competitive positioning of a healthcare tech unicorn, and the results ultimately led to a $3 billion merger.”

Fourth-year Fellow majoring in cognitive science, computer science, and philosophy “I found the Fellowship’s support instrumental in helping me fulfil my professional goals. After the Oxford Maymester and subsequent backpacking through Europe post-freshman year, I went to London to work in data analytics for the NHS. The Fellowship provided me with the ability to support myself abroad during this otherwise unpaid internship. I was able to gain valuable experience working on code outside of the classroom and land internships at Google the following summers. I’m excited to return to work as a Software Engineer at Google after graduation.”

MARGARET (EMME) WARREN Fourth-year Fellow majoring in finance and risk management & insurance “I did internships at Padgett (accounting and franchising) and Protiviti (risk and compliance consulting). During school, I was involved with the Ballroom Performance Group, and I loved being treasurer (my favorite style is bachata). I also played Rugby, both hooker and flanker, and it really helped me get my confidence back. With the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF), I was the only female sector leader, headed up the Financial Institutions Group, and won every pitch.”

Fourth-year Foundation Fellow majoring in applied mathematics and international affairs

“Before I came to UGA, I didn’t know that undergrads could do research, but through the FFR community and CURO, I was able to dive head first into research projects that interested me. I met my first research mentor through another FFR and completed my first independent project through the Honors Policy Scholars course. From there, I conducted a variety of other research projects, leading up to a thesis on Media Framing of Women in Organized Crime in Latin America. These experiences also helped me land an internship at the Stimson Center, an international security policy think tank in Washington, D.C., that I heard about through an FFR alum. Without the connections and support of the FFR community, I may never have ventured into the wonderful world of research.”

“I knew I wanted to pursue research coming into UGA, but I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to work on five different research projects in my four years here. On campus, Dr. Byers started out as my research mentor, but he has become a mentor to me in so many other areas of life. He has supported and helped me to explore my interests outside of our research project, and he helped me to start a new organization, Invasive Species at UGA. His guidance helped me grow into a better researcher and make an impact during my time here at UGA.”

“Before freshman year, I heard about the Small Satellite Lab from older FFR and immediately knew I wanted to pursue research there. Upon joining the lab my second semester, I began pursuing multiple research opportunities in satellite and space technology—including a summer fellowship with CURO, three internships at various NASA centers, and eventually a master’s thesis—all while leading multiple teams within the lab. In retrospect, every major accomplishment I’ve made over the past four years can be traced back to FFR and the amazing professional network the program fosters.”

“Since coming here, I’ve conducted research with the UGA Computer Science Department, the UGA Geography Department, the Netherlands Organization for Applied Science Research, and the University of Warwick. I’ve led clubs and was the editor in chief of a political magazine, debated AI ethics at Oxford, and worked at Google for two summers. I’ve also had the opportunity to earn a master’s in AI along with a bachelor’s in CS through the UGA Double Dawgs Program in just four years.”

“I participated in a long-term science education research project under Dr. David Hall’s and Dr. Norris Armstrong’s labs. This project involved the construction of a 3D model of DNA that could be printed and implemented in classrooms to help students better understand the molecular structure of DNA. I also interned in Athens at the Georgia Museum of Natural History, created educational videos related to archaeology in collaboration with Dr. Jennifer Birch, and attended the Slavia Foundation Field School in Gac, Poland. At this field school, I learned surveying and excavation methods and became proficient in mortuary archaeology and osteology.”

Dr. Lemons taught me more and supported me more than I can express in my thanks. With her lab, I’ve presented at conferences, authored published research, and played a mean game of Codenames. Keaton’s research projects range from cantilevered beams to turbomachinery components.

He was the president of AIAA’s UGA chapter, an active member of the Small Satellite Research Laboratory, and an intern at Lockheed Martin, and next year, he will pursue a PhD in mechanical engineering at UGA and study mechanical vibration under a grant from Sandia National Labs.

Fourth-year Ramsey Scholar majoring in cognitive science with an MS in artificial intelligence

A Double Dawgs participant, Rachel is combining technical expertise with deep insight into how people work. Recipient of a CURO research award and a National Science Foundation REU, she has studied cutting-edge problems at the intersection of AI technology and public policy. She has made time to serve as president of the UGA Fencing Club and to compete (she was also a top-10 scorer at the USA Collegiate Fencing Championships).

ALEX ELDRIDGE Fourth-year Ramsey Scholar majoring in linguistics and mathematics

“Sophomore year at UGA, I worked with the Quinn Research Group on their Ciliary Motion Analysis project with the goal of identifying abnormal images of nasal cilia. We adapted newlydeveloped deep learning architectures and experimented on our own novel architectures with powerful computing resources at UGA. In the summer of 2021, I participated in an REU on knot theory mentored by two professors in the UGA math department, and we presented our research from this program at two undergraduate mathematics conferences.”

Fourth-year Foundation Fellow majoring in international affairs “Being a tutor for the Athens Prison Tutorial for all four years of my time at UGA brought me so much personal fulfilment and joy because of the friendships I formed with fellow tutors and the incarcerated students we tutored at the Diversion Center. An internship with the Tahirih Justice Center gave me a clearer idea of where I’d like and not like to take my career, all while working with a group of incredibly caring and inspiring supervisors and team members. I interacted directly with clients seeking assistance from the Forced Marriage Initiative, which was one of the most valuable experiences I have ever had both from an emotional and a professional development point of view.”

Fourth-year Fellow majoring in cognitive science and philosophy with an MS in artificial intelligence “One of the best parts of my time at UGA has been my work leading The Backpack Project of Athens, a local non-profit that works with individuals experiencing homelessness and encampment communities in Athens. I’ve loved meeting new members as we’ve grown, and helping them get involved with the Athens community through hands-on volunteer events that let them actually meet and have conversations with the people they’re helping (the relationships we build are the most important part of our work). I’m so grateful for the support of the community which has allowed us to bring meals to multiple encampments (60+ meals) in Athens on a weekly basis, distribute other important resources such as shoes and medical supplies, and help people in any way we can to escape the vicious and unfair cycle of housing insecurity.”

MARSHALL BERTON Fourth-year Ramsey Scholar studying majoring in finance/international business and international affairs “As executive director of UGA Votes, I led a nonpartisan voter registration organization during one of the most contentious elections in Georgia history. Despite the pandemic, we helped 1,214 students and community members cast their ballots on campus. Our work was covered by CNN, the Washington Post, and other notable media outlets. Managing national press interviews from my college apartment was something I could not have done without the leadership development and support of the FFR program.”

APARNA PATERIA Fourth-year Foundation Fellow majoring in biology and English “FFR was the reason I could obtain a diversity of experience working with children and adults in all kinds of educational and nonprofit settings – as a shift leader with Athens Prison Tutorial, an English tutor with Paper Airplanes, a peer learning assistant and chemistry tutor with the Division of Academic Enhancement, and a volunteer at Bala Vihar Indian Cultural School.”

Fourth-year Fellow majoring in cognitive science, computer science, and philosophy “One of the most meaningful experiences during my time here was founding and running Girls Who Code at UGA. I participated in my high school’s GWC club, which led me to major in computer science. When I noticed that there were no GWC chapters in the schools in Athens, a friend and I started planning. That’s how Girls Who Code at UGA was born, an outreach organization that connects UGA students with Athens-area middle and high school students to teach computer science fundamentals. The best part of volunteering is seeing the look on the girls’ faces when their programs successfully run and they get to play a game or browse a website that they built themselves. Through the club, I was also able to find my own community of women in STEM on campus, which has been very rewarding.”

Through The Backpack Project, Fellows provide support for Georgians experiencing homelessness William Ross, Christopher Rosselot, and Hyde Healy—along with other Fellows and additional college students from UGA and Georgia Tech, gathered for Homeless Heroes Day 2021 at the Westside Cultural Arts Center in downtown Atlanta. The Backpack Project achieved its goal of packing and hand-delivering backpacks to more than 1,500 people experiencing homelessness in Georgia. They were helped by participating companies and over 150 employee-volunteers, pictured here. In 2021, William was CEO of The Backpack Project, which is a student-run 501(c) (3) non-profit dedicated to packing and handdelivering backpacks containing food, toiletries, and other necessities to those experiencing homelessness. Christopher is now CEO, and Hyde serves on the staff.

Individual Travel-Study Claire Bunn ‘22 “For someone from a small town in Arkansas, the Fellowship has been my window to the world. I had always known the world offered so much, but travel with the Fellowship helped me see I had a place in it. Group travel in the beginning gave me the confidence to find my footing in new settings while forming close friendships, and as I grew older, I’ve had the courage to create my own adventures.”

Beyond the resources and opportunities of the Fellowship, they also teach you so much about yourself and what you can do. Traveling with the Fellowship taught me that nowhere around the world is too far or too unattainable.”

Fourth-year Foundation Fellow majoring in anthropology and biology “Spending a month at an archaeology field school in Poland was a really formative experience for me. Focused on a medieval cemetery in Giecz, a village near Poznan, our project hoped to protect the artifacts and remains at the site from agricultural damage. The program challenged my understanding of material from my classes, and it pushed me to grow into a more independent, self-aware, and grounded person. I met other students passionate about anthropology and learned so much from their unique backgrounds – how to properly clean off artifacts, how forensic research centers are run, how to set up a VPN to watch new episodes of RuPaul’s Drag Race. In all seriousness, the opportunity to participate in this program was a major factor in my decision to pursue anthropology as a career.”

Fourth-year Foundation Fellow majoring in history and women’s studies “In the summer of 2021, I decided to combine my interests in history and nature in order to spend as much time outdoors as possible. I went on camping trips to Cherokee National Forest, Grandfather Mountain State Park, Shenandoah National Park, New River Gorge, Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Grand Staircase- Escalante, and North Rim Grand Canyon National Park. Over the course of the summer, I visited Turtle Mound and the Nuttalburg Mine. I went white water rafting on the Nolichucky River and the New River, and I stayed in the raft through giant class-five rapids. I hiked Angels Landing and Grandfather Mountain, surviving twisted ankles, poison ivy, and snake encounters. From getting covered in mud while caving at Worely’s Cave to seeing the Big Dipper while night zip lining, FFR enabled me to have one of the best summers of my life.”

New York & Washington, D.C. Led by Honors assistant dean Jessica Hunt and Dr. Andrew Owsiak of the School for Public and International Affairs, first-year Foundation Fellows explored two of the nation’s most important cities. Highlights of the trip included a discussion with CNN commentator Paul Begala and visits with UGA alumni working in cybersecurity, public health, medicine, finance, law and politics, sustainability, media, and the arts. UGA Foundation emeritus trustee Susan Waltman, senior vice president and general counsel at the Greater New York Hospital Association, and Foundation Fellow alumna Samia McEachin hosted us at GNYHA for a conversation about the role of data management in the city’s emergency preparedness initiatives. Three UGA Grady College alumni provided a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into producing some of the most watched news programs in the country. Inside Edition anchor Deborah Norville invited students into the studio for the taping of the day’s show and discussed both the nuts and bolts of media production and the role of media in the 21st century.

Robin Hommel, executive broadcast producer of The View, hosted students for an episode that included Whoopi Goldberg’s interviews with Kristin Chenoweth and Matt Damon. Kevin Schatell, associate plaza producer at The Today Show, talked about what it was like to win an Emmy before the age of 30.

Spring Travel

Greece Designed by Dr. David Williams, former associate provost and Honors dean, and led by Honors staff Colleen Pruitt and Kavi Pandian, this Fellows trip explored the history, philosophy, art, and architecture of ancient Greece. Alongside reading Bettany Hughes’s The Hemlock Cup: Socrates, Athens and the Search for the Good Life—visits to the Tomb of Agamemnon in Mycenae and the Temple of Apollo at Delphi brought tales of the Trojan War and ancient Greek mythology to life, while tours of the Parthenon, Acropolis Museum, and National Archaeological Museum highlighted the cultural and artistic development of Greece over the millennia. A closing day trip to the island of Hydra gave students a chance to explore Greece’s natural beauty and learn about one of its oldest and most reliable forms of transportation—donkeys!

Colombia Led by Professor Tim Samples of the Terry College of Business and Honors assistant dean Maria de Rocher, Fellows explored the political economy, history, urban development, and geography of Colombia. From Bogotá to Medellín to Cartagena—on bikes, on buses, on foot, on catamaran—students explored the three cities and their surrounding environs. They visited Monserrate in Bogotá and hiked to waterfalls in the mountains outside the city; toured La Nueva Comuna 13 in Medellín to learn about the neighborhood’s revitalization, and explored Cartagena’s colonial past within its Walled City, a UNESCO World Heritage site that includes Plaza de la Aduana, where over a million enslaved people were once trafficked, and Palacio de la Inquisición, seat of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Thailand Led by Dr. Hyangsoon Yi of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and Honors communications coordinator Stephanie Schupska, Fellows explored Buddhist history and practice in Thailand as well as traditional Thai cuisine. Through visits to Thai landmarks and temples—including Wat Phra Kaew (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha) in Bangkok and the Summer Palace and temples including Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Phra Mahathat, and Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon in Ayutthaya—they engaged with the country’s religious and cultural traditions. They rounded out their trip with visits to Koh Larn (Coral Island), one of Pattaya’s stunning coastal destinations; Khao Chi Chan (Buddha Mountain); and the Grand Palace in Bangkok, a complex of buildings that have been the official residence of the Kings of Siam since 1782.

Morocco Led by Dr. Kenneth Honerkamp of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and Honors staff Emily Ramsey, Fellows explored the religion, culture, history, and landscape of Morocco. They visited the medina in Marrakech, Agalmous and a 14th century Berber granary in the High Atlas Mountains, a madrasa and mosque under restoration outside Tinghir, a library in Tamegroute containing over 4,000 illuminated manuscripts dating back to the earliest days of Islam, a small Jewish synagogue in the old town of Zagora, and the ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They also discussed local initiatives with NGO community leaders, camped overnight in the Sahara Desert, and met with the caretakers of the Sufi zawiya in Tamegroute. One of the highlights of the trip was being invited to attend a roundtable lecture at Qasi Ayad University, after which students were interviewed for a local news broadcast.

San Francisco

Led by Honors dean Meg Amstutz and Honors director of development Debbie Daniel, Ramsey Scholars visited San Francisco, Sausalito, and Palo Alto to connect with alumni and opportunities in the Bay Area. After a whirlwind food tour of the city, they spent a day in Muir Woods and engaged with John Muir’s timeless works about the connection between humans and nature. To close out the trip, they visited Stanford University and met with administrators from the business school and the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program as well as UGA alumni currently studying at Stanford.

“The Oxford Maymester met and exceeded my expectations (and oh boy, my expectations were high). My favorite parts were grabbing warm chocolate croissants from the HB Allen cafe, walking the beautiful cliffs and shores of England, talking with my Biomedical Ethics class in the absolute dark at Dans le Noir for our London excursion, and playing chess all night with my friends at the UGA@Oxford house. I also loved how I was able to get closer to my amazing peers in the program. I really feel, even more so after the Maymester, that I have found a family at UGA.”

Lisa Ann Coole Award

Emma Ellis and Emma Hale honored with Lisa Ann Coole Award The Foundation Fellows Class of 2022 chose Emma Ellis and Emma Hale as this year’s recipients of the Lisa Ann Coole Award. The award was established in 1999 to honor Lisa Ann Coole’s memory and to inspire Foundation Fellows to translate into their lives the compassion, joy, courage, and excellence that defined Lisa’s presence in the Fellowship, at UGA, and in her communities both in Georgia and in Illinois.

Lisa was an extraordinary person. She graduated from the University of Georgia magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in biology in 1997. She was a 19-time All-American swimmer, won two NCAA titles, and was selected as the 1997 NCAA Woman of the Year. Lisa had just completed her first year of veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois-Champaign when she died as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident.

In 1999, she was inducted into the UGA Athletic Association Circle of Honor, the highest tribute paid to former Bulldog athletes and coaches.

Emma Ellis graduated with a degree in genetics and is now completing a year-long community health fellowship with Project Horseshoe Farm in Alabama while applying to MD/MPH programs for the following year.

Emma (Chandler) Hale graduated with degrees in history and women’s studies and is now teaching high school in Mississippi and pursuing a master’s degree at Ole Miss as part of the Mississippi Teachers Corps.

Their classmates share their appreciation below: “Emma Ellis excels in anything she sets her mind to, but she never flaunts her talents or her accomplishments. Ellis is intentionally kind to everyone she interacts with, whether that is her friends or people she’s just meeting. She’s always done her best to bring the people in our grade together, and she always makes sure that everyone is included. She’s served the Athens community through her work with IMPACT and The Cottage, and her life goals are also aimed toward service. She’s been a kind, considerate friend who supports others while achieving many great things herself, and she is very deserving of this award.”

“Emma Ellis is a thoughtful, supportive, and inviting friend with a big heart, and is everyone’s go-to when they need a sympathetic ear. At the same time, she constantly keeps herself busy with various campus and community commitments, not for any sort of recognition, but because she enjoys helping people. She is a true servant-leader; from volunteering at the library, hospital, and sexual assault center, planning IMPACT trips, organizing Global Health Union events, and more. She is so humble and would never brag on herself, but her academic, research, and leadership accomplishments are beyond impressive as well.”

“Chandler Hale helps everyone feel included (and comes up with memorable group bonding ideas, like hosting a class-wide sleepover in Myers). She treats others with respect and an everpresent kindness. She also cares deeply about serving others in an impactful way; she often talks about how much she enjoys her work with Athens Prison Tutorial and is the first to sign up for the

local Days of Service. Her academic pursuits are also impressive, though we don’t hear her bragging about them. She tells us about her new projects because she’s excited about learning about history and wants to share that interest. And there’s no question that Chandler has a love for the Fellowship—I think our collective handmade masks, pillows, and blankets are a testament to that.

She embodies the values this award hopes to honor.”

“Affectionately known as Chandler to our class since she didn’t want multiple Emmas to confuse anyone – she is the type of student who asks questions in class because she is genuinely curious and will fascinate you with stories of feminist figures at a party. Her academic distinction is a natural outgrowth of her innate love of learning. Her profound empathy is her greatest strength, and it reverberates throughout the Fellowship. Her desire to bring others together is responsible for Shakespearean reenactments in Oxford, crafting workshops, camping trips, and squirrel watching. She never meets a stranger and is a mentor, inspiration, and friend to all.
