FROM THE PRESIDENT
As a leading public research university committed to innovative teaching, pioneering research, and community-engaged service, the University of Georgia is proud to be the home of the outstanding Foundation Fellowship program. Foundation Fellows and Ramsey Scholars benefit from the vibrant campus life and educational opportunities that only a major research university can provide while receiving all of the academic and personal support of a small, elite college. They work closely with renowned faculty both inside and outside of the classroom and begin making their mark on UGA and the world from their very first semester. I am proud of all that our Foundation Fellows and Ramsey Scholars achieve as students and alumni. They are a valued part of UGA’s diverse academic community, which shares their dedication to excellence.
Jere W. Morehead, President University of Georgia
FROM THE UGA FOUNDATION CHAIR
As we welcome a new class of Foundation Fellows, we are reminded of the incredible capacity of these tremendously talented and diverse students. Whatever their interests, past history tells us that after making significant contributions at UGA, many of these scholars will advance to careers and callings in local, national, and global forums addressing the most critical needs of our times, while others will be admitted to top graduate programs, and many will earn the country’s most prestigious post graduate scholarships. The University of Georgia Foundation is proud to support these outstanding students and is convinced that the Foundation Fellowship is the one of the best and most prestigious programs of its kind in the country.
Neal Quirk, Chair University of Georgia Foundation

“The Foundation Fellowship has been the base that allowed me to explore and follow my passions for the past four years. It has provided the financial support, resources, community, and encouragement that have guided and uplifted me in every arena of my college and professional experiences. I was able to experience this all alongside my best friends, while traveling the world, meeting incredible people, and learning from faculty across disciplines.”
“I have done so much more in so many different directions than I would have thought possible. I’ve done research in three departments, multiple internships and clubs, and designed my own degree path, all while being met with encouragement and assistance at every step. Having that level of support and engagement from my mentors and advisors has made my college experience so much more than just attending some classes and taking exams.”

“My time as a Foundation Fellow changed my life, undoubtedly for the better. I’ve been given the freedom and support to grow, learn, pursue passions and interests, and further myself by improving upon and adding talents and skill sets. I have met life-long friends, reconnected with old ones, and built a foundation for myself that will allow me to become my best self and, hopefully, better the world. I hope my impact here is long-lasting, and I want to thank those who were there for the ride.”

“UGA has given me the opportunity to fully explore my interests and passions on my own schedule. I would recommend that any student take full advantage of the wide breadth of education available but also the range of friends, mentors, and spaces that allow you to be bored, think, and dream.”

“The Ramsey Scholarship afforded me the opportunity to study food security and medical Spanish in Amsterdam and Riobamba and travel to San Francisco, Sapelo Island, and the Mississippi Delta with the Ramsey Scholars. However, from the faculty-led seminars and book discussions to the 4 a.m. conversations in Myers lobby, some of the most special parts of my college experience took place right here in Athens, immersed in a community of scholars, leaders, and friends.”

“The Fellowship has been very accommodating of me throughout the entire process of exploring possible careers during college. Whatever direction I was going at the time, and even during the chaos of the last year, I was provided with resources that helped me perform my best, gain more exposure, and enjoy my college experience.”
“In my room I have a stack of books heavier than I can carry from all the book discussions I’ve attended at UGA. I have taken the chance to sign up for every Fellows and Honors enrichment activity I could fit into my schedule. It’s so exciting when alumni come back to lead discussions or seminars about their books and research, and to hear all about the cool work that they’ve been up to since graduation. Honestly, there’s one simple word to describe everyone and everything: interesting.”

Rhodes Scholar
Phaidra Buchanan
It was Nov. 21, 2020, and Phaidra Buchanan was on Zoom, interviewing for a Rhodes Scholarship. She was about to make history: She is in the first class of Rhodes Scholars to be elected virtually—she is one of 32 U.S. Rhodes Scholars for 2021—and she is the University of Georgia’s first Black Rhodes Scholar.
Phaidra was one of four Rhodes finalists from UGA— the highest number of finalists the institution has produced in a given year—and she said she was able to go into the interview with good energy because of all of the encouragement and preparation the finalists received from Jessica Hunt, assistant dean and director of scholarships; David S. Williams, dean of the Morehead Honors College; and other UGA faculty.
“As dean, I interact on a daily basis with wonderful students and people,” Williams said. “In Phaidra’s case, I’ve had numerous interactions, including helping to recruit her to come to UGA, leading domestic and international travel study groups that included her, and teaching her in a course. I have had the chance to watch Phaidra grow over the past four years. As the Rhodes Scholarship campus representative, it has been great to work especially closely with her.”
Phaidra is UGA’s 25th Rhodes Scholar.
It was a four-hour wait from the time her interview ended until the time Phaidra was called back to the computer. She spent every one of those hours in the Foundation Fellows Library on the second floor of Moore Hall, perched on the couches, pacing the floor, and sitting at the table at the back of the room.
She and the other finalists played Pictionary and made a Spotify playlist during their wait.
Immediately after the Rhodes committee made its announcement and finished its housekeeping duties with the recipients, Phaidra pulled out her phone.
“As soon as it was over, I called my family,” she said. “It was very surreal.”
When Phaidra applied to the Foundation Fellowship in 2016, she wrote a bio that still holds true: “An aspiring teacher … she plans to major in education with a focus on education policy.”
Phaidra graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in social studies education from the Mary Frances Early College of Education and a minor in German. She plans a career as a teacher “who fosters criticality, compassion, and joy,” and as an advocate for policies that empower students and communities, according to her Rhodes bio. At Oxford, she plans to pursue an M.Sc. in comparative and international education.
Phaidra was a volunteer with U-Lead Athens, a tutor for the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement Tutoring Service, and an assistant and panel moderator for the Morehouse

College Annual Math Competitions Bootcamp. She was a student assistant in the history department, on the Meigs Professorship Selection Committee, on UGA’s First Look Academic Panel, and in the LEAD Fellows Program. Through the Honors Team-Based Problem-Solving Course, she also worked with Envision Athens and its partner organization MOB Athens.
Phaidra worked on several research projects at UGA, including investigating structural inequities in the American educational system and their historical roots, and how teachers, teacher educators, and educational theorists have sought to combat them; completing an inquiry into the history and current state of school segregation in Fayette County, the school district where she completed her primary and secondary education; investigating the history of slavery at UGA as part of a research team; and helping facilitate workshops designed to develop pre-service teachers’ cultural awareness.
She is especially proud of her work with U-Lead, an organization that provides educational support, scholarships, and mentoring to local students of various immigrant backgrounds and documentation statuses.
“As a second-generation immigrant whose life was shaped by my parents’ educational attainment, I’m proud to have served as a college coach, tutored in math, and enjoyed spending time with such brilliant, passionate, and fun students since my first year.”
Recognition
Schwarzman Scholar Zakiyya Ellington International
Zakiyya Ellington was one of 154 students selected internationally for the Schwarzman Scholarship, a graduate fellowship designed to prepare the next generation of leaders with an understanding of China’s role in global trends.
Zakiyya is UGA’s sixth Schwarzman Scholar. The incoming Class of 2022 was narrowed down from more than 3,600 applicants from China, the U.S., and around the world. It includes students from 39 countries and 99 universities.
Six classes of Schwarzman Scholars have been named since the highly competitive program opened to applicants in 2015. Scholars are taught by leading international faculty and pursue a fully funded, yearlong master’s degree in global affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Students choose a focus of public policy, economics and business, or international studies.
An Honors student, Foundation Fellow, and Stamps Scholar from Allen, Texas, Zakiyya graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Arabic with a minor in Spanish from the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences in addition to a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in business analytics from the Terry College of Business.
Zakiyya intends to apply her talents, experiences, and passion to advance social and economic equity for underserved communities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through entrepreneurship. She aspires to work directly with ethnic minorities, refugees, and migrants to assist them in growing sustainable startups.
She plans to later continue this work at a larger scale as a strategy expert, serving organizations with similar aims.
As a Schwarzman Scholar, Zakiyya’s concentration will be in economics and business. She plans to examine China’s approach to recent economic development and its impact on the socioeconomic status of underserved groups. As she translates these learnings to MENA contexts, she will build capabilities in marginalized communities to help them navigate appropriate development models and advance their social and economic empowerment.
“Zakiyya has been a delight to know and work with since I first met her when she was still in high school,” said David S. Williams, associate provost and dean of the Morehead Honors College. “Though Zakiyya obviously has a first-rate intellect, she is also an extremely kind and supportive person. Given all her gifts and promise, it is clear that Zakiyya will make a very positive impact on society.”
Zakiyya is a Sea Island Scholar and Presidential Scholar and received the Hostilo Family Scholarship in History. She

is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies. She has interned as a summer business analyst for McKinsey and Company and has served as a Career Prep Fellow for Management Leadership for Tomorrow and a campus organizer for Food and Water Watch. She is an Honors teaching assistant, Athens Prison Tutorial volunteer tutor, Kickstart Fund partner, LEAD Fellow, Terry College of Business ambassador, Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity co-vice president of professional activities as well as a UGA Women’s Rugby Football Club student-athlete, treasurer, and three-time team MVP. She was a Freshman Connect member of UGA’s Student Government Association.
An advanced speaker of modern standard Arabic, specifically in the Moroccan dialect, Zakiyya is also proficient in Spanish. She has studied abroad in Tanzania, Morocco, and the United Kingdom.
“The Schwarzman Scholars program connects future global leaders, and that makes it a perfect fit for Zakiyya,” said Jessica Hunt, assistant dean of Honors and director of scholarships. “Zakiyya has proven to be an exceptional mentor to her fellow students and to budding entrepreneurs, and she has worked hard to promote diverse and inclusive workspaces and communities. She will no doubt do the same during her year in Beijing as a Schwarzman Scholar.”
KnightHennessy Scholar Arden Farr
Arden Farr is among the fourth cohort of Knight-Hennessy Scholars, a global graduate-level program at Stanford University.
Established in 2016, the KnightHennessy Scholars program provides full funding for graduate students as they pursue studies ranging from medicine to law to doctoral programs as well as joint and dual degrees.
The program is designed to prepare students to take leadership roles in finding creative solutions to complex global issues. Arden is UGA’s third Knight-Hennessy Scholar.
“As someone who has taught and worked closely with Arden, I know that she is a most deserving recipient of the Knight-Hennessy Scholarship,” said David S. Williams, associate provost and dean of the Morehead Honors College.
“It is evident that Arden’s academic, internship, and service background informs her long-term interests in defense, diplomacy, human rights, and public service. Taking into account the leadership roles Arden has already filled both on and beyond our campus, I am sure that she will be a force for positive change in the future.”
A Foundation Fellow and Honors student from Memphis, Tennessee, Arden graduated this spring with bachelor’s degrees in international affairs and economics from the School of Public and International Affairs and Terry College of Business, respectively. She will begin a master’s degree in international policy at Stanford University in the fall.
She plans to apply to the Presidential Management Fellowship, putting her on

a direct track to a leadership position in the federal government. Her goal is to work in the federal government, advocating for arms control policies that are conscious of human rights.
Arden was an Undergraduate Research Fellow for the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Monterey, California, focused on the intentions and capabilities of ISIS and the degradation of the norms of weapons of mass destruction.
Her list of previous internships as a UGA undergraduate is extensive— she was an analytical intern with the U.S. Department of Defense, digitally tracking information campaigns and propaganda; a remote research intern with the Justice Centre Hong Kong, analyzing the human rights situation; and an analytical and legal intern with the Freeland Foundation in Bangkok, Thailand, researching countertrafficking programs. Her internships with the U.S. Department of State include the Office of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, investigating gross violations of human rights; the Office of Weapons of Mass Destruction Terrorism, working with partner countries and updating databases of nuclear trafficking
incidents; and the Global Engagement Center, tracking disinformation and propaganda campaigns.
She was a Public Service and Outreach Scholar with UGA’s J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development, a UGA Public Service and Outreach unit, focusing on state-wide foster care programs; and a Research Fellow with the KAIST Nuclear Nonproliferation Education and Research Center in Daejeon, South Korea, conducting research on the future of nuclear power in South Korea.
Arden has been a CURO research assistant, Honors Policy Scholar, and member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Richard B. Russell Security Leadership Program. She has served on the executive board and as external engagements coordinator for Roosevelt at UGA.
During her time at UGA, Arden studied abroad at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science Technology and the University of Oxford. She has been awarded the Senator Chambliss Leadership Fellowship and the U.S. Department of State Certificate of Appreciation. She speaks German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

“For every official faculty mentor I’ve listed, there are probably 10 other faculty members, staff members, students, alumni, or other UGA/ Athens/Morehouse/Walton County community members who have changed my life and helped me grow. I am forever grateful for the many people who guided me through my journey at UGA. They know who they are, and if they’re reading this right now, I want them to know that I will never forget them. My only future aspiration is to pay their kindness forward.”

“Dr. Jeffrey Berejikian is the reason I study international affairs. I registered for his first-year odyssey class, Foreign Policy and Neuroscience, largely by chance, but by the end of the semester I had discovered an unknown passion. He and I have conducted three years of U.S. military decision-making research, which is advising the Pentagon. I earned a Master of International Policy through the Double Dawgs program and will be moving to Washington, D.C., after graduation. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Berejikian for helping me find my path.”

“Taking organic chemistry with Dr. Suzanne Ellenberger was directly responsible for my decision to become a chemistry major. I was always waiting in line to ask her questions after class, and I remember constantly finding myself in her office for her weekly office hours. It was through her encouragement I realized I should be doing more with chemistry. Despite my protesting, she kept gently prodding me to add the major. It’s been three years since that class, and I cannot imagine my college career or future without it.”
“With the support of the Fellowship, I discovered my passion for computer science and cybersecurity. As a result, I have conducted exciting research on campus in Dr. Kyu Hyung Lee’s Software Security and Cyber Forensics Lab and off campus as an NSF REU cybersecurity researcher at Oakland University. I am thankful for Dr. Lee’s guidance. I have learned so much from him, and it’s because of his patience and willingness to work with undergraduate researchers like me that I am the cybersecurity researcher I am today.”

“My work with the UGA football team was one of the most valuable experiences in my four years here. Working with the special teams coaches, I broke down film of future opponents and recorded relevant information used in scouting reports. It feels amazing knowing I am doing something I really love and gaining new insights into the sport as well as the insider knowledge of the industry. (It’s always fun hearing something before ESPN reports it!) I have made great connections with some amazing people.”
“Having the privilege to work in Washington, D.C., for six months, fully funded by the Foundation Fellowship and the Sen. Chambliss Fellowship, allowed me to do meaningful work in the realm of foreign policy and adapt my career trajectory. I spent these six months working for the U.S. Department of State, promoting diplomatic partnerships to prevent weapons of mass destruction terrorism as well as addressing gross violations of human rights and genocide in the East Asia and Pacific region.”

“I am grateful I packed as many experiences as possible into summer 2019. I spent the end of May and early June in South Africa, studying politics and development, funded by the Honors International Scholars Program. I spent the remainder in New York City as a software engineering intern with The Daily Beast. From my first day, my code was going live on the site and in their databases. I learned how to operate in a corporate software environment while also gaining valuable skills, like new programming languages and collaborative code writing.”

“The Fellowship has empowered me to research pressing issues surrounding access to affordable, quality healthcare and reduce barriers through community-based advocacy and government regulations. Through collaborations with renowned faculty, staff, and an inspiring cohort of students engaged in a variety of interdisciplinary work, I was able to merge my interests in health policy, economics, community health, and legislative advocacy to travel and intern across the United States and the globe.”

More importantly, I was able to immerse myself in a community of intellectuals and driven individuals. Every day, this community inspires, motivates, and encourages us to pursue what we desire and be a bit better than we were the day before.”
“My experiences analyzing pension plans for clients as an actuarial intern at Aon and examining workers’ compensation losses for a new safety program as a risk management intern at TBC Corporation confirmed for me that actuarial science was just the right combination of mathematics and business for me. Stamps Day of Service
UGA Stamps Scholars invited other Fellows and Ramseys to join them in two service activities in the fall Stamps Scholars and other FFR joined PERIOD@ UGA for its packing party, which is a work session that includes documentary screenings and guest speakers to incorporate education and advocacy into the evening’s activities. PERIOD@UGA is committed to eliminating the period taboo and expanding access to menstrual care in the community.
Stamps Scholars and other FFR also volunteered with The Backpack Project of Athens (TBP/ATH) to cook 60 meals. They delivered the meals to homeless encampments that the organization works with in Athens.
Luke Armao, a Foundation Fellow and Stamps Scholar, was president of TBP/ATH in 2020-2021.
“Once we had people’s trust and built relationships with them, it became a lot easier to help, because the people we knew in one encampment would show us other encampments,” he told The Red & Black in November 2020.
“It’s been really cool to see people we started working with finding housing and work,” Luke said. “That’s been my favorite part of leading this organization, is you see how our relationship with our clients has evolved. I’m glad we have their trust.”
Feeding the Frontlines
Collaboration provided meals for healthcare workers and revenue for restaurants
In spring 2020, Fellows alum Aditya Sood and Honors alum Anita Qualls formed a nonprofit to help ease the burden of thousands of workers across the state.
When the pandemic hit, Aditya (Fellows Class of 2019) was in his second semester of medical school at Emory. Anita was in Cambridge, England, as UGA’s first-ever Churchill Scholar.
After Anita returned to the States, she actively sought ways to contribute to the fight against COVID-19. One of the friends she reached out to was Cali Callaway (Fellows Class of 2017), a thirdyear medical student at Cornell. Cali was involved in an effort to deliver restaurantmade meals to healthcare workers around New York, called NYP Healthcare Heroes.
When Anita learned about NYP Healthcare Heroes, she set up a similar effort in Athens and contacted Aditya, who was in Alpharetta. The concept created a partnership between the organization
and local restaurants who made and then delivered fresh meals to healthcare workers in hospitals and medical clinics around the state. Feed the Frontlines volunteers handled the logistics of connecting with healthcare providers and providing funding to restaurant partners.
“We realized there was a need, not just with healthcare workers who were struggling but also with local restaurants that had no source of income but massive rents to pay,” Aditya said.
Anita and Aditya cast a wide net and reeled in dozens of friends and acquaintances from across Georgia who, like them, were trying to figure out a way to make an impact.
“Being a part of this effort during the early stages of the pandemic helped me feel connected with UGA, and I got to help organize a fundraiser targeting UGA students,” said Jaaie Varshney, a third-year Foundation Fellow majoring in political
UGA Visitors Center tour guides

science and women’s studies.
Jaaie was a coordinator in her hometown of Rome, along with her sister Juhi.
Feed the Frontlines Georgia grew from four people to 80 in just two and a half weeks, and as of fall 2020, had served more than 40 hospitals and clinics across the state. More than 1,000 meals were delivered statewide every week. Anita estimates that 90% of the volunteers were current UGA students or alumni.
Feed the Frontlines Georgia also provided crucial support to rural areas. They raised more than $75,000, which helped keep dozens of restaurants afloat.
Also involved were Avni Ahuja (Fellows Class of 2020); Elise Karinshak, third-year Foundation Fellow; Jessica Ma (Fellows Class of 2020); Prabhjot Minhas (Ramseys Class of 2019; and Vineet Raman (Ramseys Class of 2019).

“Serving as SGA president during a pandemic has been the most formative experience of my life. I got hands-on experience with institutional advocacy, lobbying/governing, policy implementation, and much more. From creating a campaign to the out-going inauguration, I have been humbled and honored by this role and believe it has been the experience of a lifetime.”

“As a UNICEF Youth Representative, I love seeing new UNICEF club leaders gain a sense of empowerment and purpose in the face of otherwise overwhelming global issues. My most meaningful takeaway has been a sense of personal responsibility for improving our world however I can and the belief I can actually do so.”

“I enjoyed learning about UGA’s mission of public service as a land-grant institution. In the PSO Student Scholars program, I visited all eight of UGA’s public service units and heard from public service faculty and staff. I later interned with three of those units: I coordinated the state science fair at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, collected economic data on rural communities for the Archway Partnership, and oversaw Campus Kitchen operations at the Office of Service-Learning. Each of these roles showed me UGA’s impact on communities across the state. ”
“The Backpack Project gave me a family away from home. I found mentors in the previous executive directors and my closest friends in the other members. We spent hours in the storage unit packing hundreds of backpacks with daily supplies and necessities to be distributed in Athens, Atlanta, and Augusta. I always looked forward to our annual Homeless Heroes Day when we packed thousands of backpacks along with our community and corporate partners to be taken to various shelters and locations in Atlanta.”

“I direct enrolled at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid for the 2019 spring semester with the goal of improving my Spanish and broadening my academic horizons. From a tiny apartment steps away from the Plaza Mayor, I spent my days reading Cervantes, studying the legal foundations of the European Union, and composing essays on Spanish mystic poets. I took advantage of every break, fulfilling long-standing dreams of visiting the Alhambra and the Sistine Chapel. I put down roots in Madrid, and I appreciate the Fellowship for giving me this opportunity to grow academically outside of my major field of study.”

“I spent a week at an equine hospital in Tennessee and shadowed a veterinary dermatologist in Switzerland to get experience in the veterinary field, and I also studied at Oxford, hiked Yosemite, gotten my motorcycle license, and completed an SCCA race driving course. These are things that I would have only dreamed of doing coming out of high school. These amazing experiences have inspired me to keep pursuing new things even as my life changes.”
“Sophomore year after I had been doing research with Dr. William Kisaalita for a few months, he asked if I was ready to go to Uganda the following summer to direct clinical trials there for some data we needed. I was taken aback but also deeply appreciative of the confidence and trust he had in me to travel there and complete the last phase of our project. The experience ended up being one of the greatest summers of my life, and I will forever be grateful to him and the Fellowship for providing the support and resources that enabled it.”

“Summiting Kilimanjaro was the most challenging yet exhilarating experience of my life. In my hardest moments, I often find myself calling back to the immense strength, freedom, joy, and gratitude I felt during the trek. The relationships I created are unlike any I have had before: sweetened by hours-long meandering conversations, warm meals together at the end of exhausting days, and words of encouragement during the final gruelling hours of the summit. The Kilimanjaro trek was a mental, physical, and spiritual detox I needed as I entered into my adult life, and I will always be grateful for it.”

“After sophomore year, I traveled to Costa Rica for the Humanities and Social Sciences Maymester. As an applied mathematics student, being able to take abbreviated courses in environmental journalism and creative writing was both intellectually stimulating and a lot of fun. But classes were only part of the experience. I’m a complete animal nerd; living in the Monteverde cloud forest was a dream come true. I saw coatis and capibaras, walked at night in search of tarantulas, befriended a cow, and went on a few hikes on my own through the old growth forest (where I finally saw spider monkeys).”

SENIORS: Lisa Ann Coole Award
Rachel Yuan honored with Lisa Ann Coole Award
The Foundation Fellows and Ramsey Honors Scholars Class of 2021 chose Rachel Yuan as this year’s recipient of the Lisa Ann Coole Award. The award was established in 1999 to honor the memory of an extraordinary young woman and to inspire Foundation Fellows to translate into their lives the compassion, joy, courage, and excellence that defined Lisa’s presence in the Fellowship, at UGA, and in her communities both in Georgia and in Illinois.
Lisa was a model Foundation Fellow. She graduated from the University of Georgia magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in biology in 1997. She was a 19-time AllAmerican swimmer, won two NCAA titles, and was selected as the 1997 NCAA Woman of the Year. Lisa had just completed her first year of veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois-Champaign when she died as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. In 1999, she was inducted into the UGA Athletic Association Circle of Honor, the highest tribute paid to former Bulldog athletes and coaches.
Rachel Yuan
Rachel graduated with a bachelor’s degree in entertainment & media studies and a STEM MBA and is now working at Anonymous Content, a talent/literary management and production company in Los Angeles, in their media rights department. Rachel’s classmates share their appreciation below.
—“Rachel is just a fantastic leader, a public servant who is deeply committed to service, and an all-around enthusiastic and genuine person. She has a deep love for those around her and is invested in the learning and growth of others.”
—“There is simply no one more qualified to receive this award. Rachel is talented and is a leader but does both so humbly. She is personable, can carry on a conversation with anyone, and always makes you feel like your opinions are valid and she is interested in them. More than anything, Rachel is the best representation of what a student leader and a Foundation Fellow should be, as her impact is more than just her impressive resume. Rachel exudes kindness and empathy.”
—“Rachel embodies all the qualities of Lisa Ann Coole, but the one that sticks out to me the most is leadership without a hint of self-promotion. Since freshman year, I’ve known that Rachel is one of the most selfless people I’ve ever known. She drops everything to support her friends and peers in their endeavors, whether it be a comedy show, a musical performance, or even an interview, and to serve the community around her with the same vigor. It doesn’t even occur to her to do otherwise—to not rearrange her entire schedule at the drop of a hat to support someone. One of

my favorite phrases is ‘moving in silence,’ a tale of humility, and she does just that, even though she herself is a highly accomplished student and future entertainment mogul. In this way, by just being herself, Rachel is the best example of kindness, leadership, and modesty, and of what we should all strive to be more like.”
Previous recipients are Avni Ahuja and Emma Goldsmith (2020), Caroline Shearer (2019), Emily Maloney and Mollie Simon (2018), Moira Fennell (2017), Kirstie Hostetter and Chris Lewitzke (2016), Eilidh Geddes (2015), Jesse Chan (2014), Sara De La Torre Berón (2013), Hank Schwartz (2012), Mir Inaamullah and Alex Squires (2011), Betsy Allen (2010), Elizabeth Godbey (2009), Anant Mandawat (2008), Helen Smith (2007), Chloe Thompson (2006), Krisda Chaiyachati (2005), Vanessa Reynolds (2004), Chris Gibson (2003), Cathy Lee and Tina Rakkit (2002), Laquesha Sanders and Kyle Wingfield (2001), Bronson Lee (2000), and Lacy Feldman and Torre Mills (1999).

Brian Quinif: From south Georgia to vice president at HSBC
Thomasville native Brian Quinif says it was a big move for him when he came to Athens to attend the University of Georgia. There would be much larger ones to come.
As an underclassman he earned a Foundation Fellowship, the university’s foremost scholarship, which set him up for a journey that filled his passport with stamps.
Brian studied abroad in Innsbruck, Austria, had an internship in Barcelona, and another study abroad trip in Rio de Janeiro. Those latter two experiences helped him acquire fluency in both Spanish and Portuguese. Further study at the London School of Economics honed his business acumen. By the time Brian (Fellows Class of 2006) graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics (he double-majored in Romance languages as an undergraduate), he had a job waiting for him as a trader on Wall Street.
“I combined the economics, politics, and language skills I acquired through the fellowship while studying abroad, so I’m extremely thankful for the opportunities that Georgia gave me both academically and in terms of learning about the world,” he said.
In June 2019, he started his current job as a vice president at HSBC. Because of his language skills, Brian works as a trader for the Latin American market, but in a general sense, the lessons he learned traveling as a student pay off every day in the increasingly global banking market.
“Knowing how to find a common language, whether it is literally speaking the same language or simply finding common ground, is a very useful thing,” Brian said. “Knowing what it’s like to be a foreigner somewhere and learning how to adapt to that culture while still being true to your own is a really valuable skill.”
