During the months of June and July, we will revisit a selection of exhibitions presented over the last 8 years.

Please join us on a virtual journey where we pause, recall what has been done and take another look at art that has been exhibited at the Johannnes Stegmann Art Gallery. #PauseRecallRelook has been conceptualised in an effort to rethink, reevaluate and open up new conversations around the incredible artists and art we have been privileged to host.

“How was it possible to subvert that hierarchy and re-write the political implications in the [colonial] photograph? Since they represent colonialism, should they simply not be erased from memory, forgotten, delegitimized? The women in the photographs that I selected had come to represent collectivities of women and men who have been subjected to the dehumanizing scientific gaze. The patronizing visual language in colonial photography had to be rudely interrupted.�

From the township streets to the hallways of power, Dr Magubane has spent more than half a century photographing the struggle against apartheid as well as other social issues. It is largely thanks to this type of heroic work that the atrocities of apartheid and the struggle by the people was documented, so all may learn from the past.

On 16 June 1976, photographer Peter Magubane went into Soweto at the break of dawn. The protesting children came up the street to meet him and said, “Stop! We want no pictures.”

Magubane replied, “A struggle without documentation is no struggle.”

In The Blind Astronomer the visible night sky and cartographically correct star maps are presented as a tactile experience written only in Braille.

Both sighted and blind remain in the dark.

The sighted can only see the night sky for its superficial beauty; the blind has a more informative experience but cannot totally grasp the visual impact of the night sky.

A mysterious, glowing creature moves uncannily in fluid motion within dense blackness. Eremocene (Age of Loneliness) is a play on our fear of the ‘extinction of the human experience’ and the descent of all bio-diverse worlds, as we know it, into permanent darkness. It suggests that we might instead embrace artificially intelligent ‘things’, with little need for that which we are comfortable with.

This survey exhibition covers twenty-five years of Andrew Tshabangu’s distinctive black-and-white photography. Tshabangu is drawn to people, urban landscapes and domestic spaces. He is fascinated by religious pilgrimages and devout ceremonies as well as the more mundane rituals like washing clothes, baking bread, carrying firewood, waiting for transport or brewing beer.

“When I started photography, it was during the height of the violence in this country. The images that were being published in mainstream media were violent ones. As somebody from the township, I knew that violence wasn’t the only thing that existed in townships – I didn’t see myself in those images, I didn’t see my people in those images.

There were other, quieter moments.

So, I decided to dedicate myself to capturing those quieter images.”

No More Fairy Tales reflects upon the long-term effects of the violence of apartheid in South Africa, twenty years after the formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It focuses on the reality that the painful trauma of apartheid deeply affected not only those who had to live through it, but continues to be a defining factor in the lives of their children.

With the victim on the left and the perpetrator on the right, viewers are invited to move the text slats with phrases out of the testimonies of both. When Dust Settles is a large immersive installation of sculpture, textiles and used vinyl panels (“tapyt”) that layers the walls and floors of the gallery. The exhibition explores iconographies and objects of material culture central to the shaping of the artist’s identity as a gay, Muslim man and his upbringing in a ‘Cape Coloured’ community in the 80s.

Igshaan Adams uses garden fencing and white cotton thread in his sculptures to reference his grandmother’s garden. Although abstract, the sculptural forms have an anthropomorphic quality - figures or creatures that sit between the real and imagined. They symbolized barriers from the inner and outer violence of everyday life experienced by Adams as a young homosexual man growing up in the 80s in South Africa.

A large scaled-up version of a spiked plastic nose ring that is used for the weaning of calves announces

the

exhibition,

Purgatorium’s

governing theme. The distress of purgatory is here understood in an earth-bound weaning context of stress and suffering. The paintings and the prints in the exhibition disseminate the tenor of the weaning metaphor of struggle for survival into the farming domains of the land, its creatures and its people.

The year 2015 begun with a series of international tragedies that reminded us that intolerance, fanaticism and violence still pervade our world.

Not enough has changed from the 1960s when the idea that a more peaceful and tolerant society was possible took hold of the world. The lyrics of “Blowin’ in the Wind” by Bob Dylan say it all. The curatorial intention of this exhibition is to revisit these lyrics in the light of a half century since.

The fragile banner installation by Vulindlela Nyoni depicting a murmuration of swallows is an ambiguous reminder of the power of solidarity, where a critical mass can alter the course of history, as we have seen with events such as the Arab Spring. It is also the affirmation of the importance of the individual in the crowd and alludes to immigration and issues of xenophobia against those seeking a different world.

On August 16 2012 South African Police shot striking mineworkers of the Lonmin platinum mines, killing 34 and wounding 78 within a radius of 350 metres of this koppie, where the men used to meet. Seventeen of the men, seeking shelter among boulders from police fire, were shot with seemingly lethal intent, some with their hands up in surrender, none was given medical assistance for his wounds. Beyond is the Lonmin smelter, which stood idle during the strike. Marikana, NorthWest Province. 11 May 2014.

In the early 1970s Pretoria’s old Market Square was given over to an opera house and to these structures symbolic of the Afrikaner struggle for national domination. Four “fiery horses” representing the four provinces, celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Republic declared under apartheid’s architect, HF Verwoerd in 1961. A 3.6 metre head commemorated the late JG Strijdom, “Lion of the North”, former prime minister and militant protagonist of Afrikaner domination. The remainder of the site was designated for commercial use and put out to tender. The only bid was from Volkskas, the “people’s bank” founded in 1934 to mobilise Afrikaner capital and break the monopoly of the “English banks”.

At about 3 a.m. on 31 May 2001, the 40th anniversary of the Republic, the Strijdom head fell through the floor on which it stood, into a parking garage below and was shattered. Two homeless people sleeping nearby were slightly injured. There was no evidence of sabotage.

Memorial to Nokuthula Simelane, who became a courier for the ANC. Trapped by the Security Police in 1983, she was severely tortured, then murdered and disappeared. The sculpture is by Rohan Janse van Vuuren, Bethal. 14 February 2014.

For some 32 years her family have tried to discover where her remains were buried or destroyed. Hers is one of many cases in which the ANC government appear to have hindered prosecution of known murderers in the Security Police. (See “Sunday Times� May 24 2015) Corne van Tonder vandalised the sculpture, was fined R15000 and ordered to pay R214000 for its repair.

On March 9 2015, Chumane Maxwele, a student of the university, threw human excrement over the statue of Cecil John Rhodes, which had “sat” undisturbed at the centre of the university’s upper campus for some 80 years. Later Maxwele spoke of having to pass “this brutal, racist, imperialist” every day and of the discomfort black students felt within the Eurocentric structure of UCT. The event greatly intensified the debate about transformation in many areas of the university’s life and policies. By a vote of 181 to one with three abstentions, the university’s senate voted to remove the statue, which was done on April 9. There followed several copycat incidents in which sculptures in different parts of the country had paint, not excrement, thrown over them.

Frances Baard, militant trade unionist and leader of the ANC Women’s League, sculpted by Anton Momberg. Kimberley, 5 February 2013.

Born in 1909 (some say 1901) she was a teacher, domestic worker and factory worker. She helped draw up the Freedom Charter, was one of the leaders of the Women’s march against Pass Laws to the Union Buildings in 1956, and went on trial for treason with Nelson Mandela and others in 1956. She was arrested in 1960, again in 1963 when she was held in solitary confinement for 12 months, and again in 1964 when she went to prison for five years for her ANC activities. After release in 1969 she was banished for two years. She died at Mabopane in 1997.

Unity is power: Let us be united, is a carving in wild fig by Noria Mabasa, on the campus of the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein.

14 March 2013 This is one of a number of works commissioned by the university after some Afrikaner men students were alleged to have urinated into the food of some Black workers. It is hoped that this “Sculpture-on-Campus” project would “promote greater understanding, respect and appreciation of cultural differences” among staff and students, and that it would instil a sense of belonging within them.

East Bank Location became Duncan Village when Governor-General Sir Patick Duncan inaugurated a housing scheme there on September 21 1941, and unveiled this namepillar. 21 October 2013.

“There was an impressive demonstration of enthusiasm and loyalty by the large Native gathering.” In his address Duncan said, ‘...Municipalities in many parts of the country are doing a great deal for the Native people, and the Government is doing all it can to help the municipalities. But the Natives can also do much to maintain satisfactory standards in their locations. ...the unsatisfactory conditions in town locations were in a large measure due to their being overcrowded by the influx of Natives who were surplus to the labour requirements of the towns...The towns can employ only a limited number, and when that number is exceeded, not only does the rate of wages drop but the workless Natives become dependent upon those in employment...Conditions of overcrowding and unemployment bring many social evils...You can do much to alleviate the position by discouraging this drift from the country of Natives other than those who come to the town to take up definite employment...’ ” Daily Dispatch 25 September 1941.

Little is factually known about her life and death. She is said to have been a Khoi woman born in about 1789, possessed of the protruding buttocks and elongated labia said to have been found among Khoi women. She was taken to England in about 1810 and for four years was exhibited as a curiosity in Britain, whether voluntarily or under duress is not certain.

She refused to display her genitals. In 1814 she was taken to France where, again, she became an exhibit. After her death in 1815 her skeleton, preserved brain and genitals became museum exhibits in France until 1974 when they were withdrawn and a cast was shown. Eventually, at the request of Nelson Mandela her remains were returned to South Africa and buried here in 2002.

A two-metre high steel picket fence encloses her grave. In 2015 a stone, next to the grave, bearing her story was defaced with paint.
