MILANO MEMO 2022
Salone del Mobile June 06 - 12
Milano Memo /
It’s been three years since the last full-scale Milano Salone del Mobile (Milan Design Week). Post-pandemic the way we engage with private and public spaces has completely changed. Flexible working is the new norm, and globally the mood is shifting away from tense and uncertain, toward hopeful optimism. As we emerge again, it’s thrilling to see large-scale events return, with the chance to reconnect with the international design community. We sent journalist and UFL brand ambassador, Emily van Velthooven to discover and report back on all the Salone had on offer. In this Milano Memo, we capture musings from her diary, and share key trends and themes that stood out during Milan Design Week 2022. This report also contains your first look at new releases we’re loving, plus updated classics from our exclusive European brands bringing comfort, elegance and sustainability to design in 2022.

Milan feels different. There’s a certain energy in the air; the city’s chicly dressed with its people looking even better than usual. Sunglasses tipped to perfection. Everyone looks exclusive, as if they’re heading to some sort of luminary party we wish we’d been invited to. While the parties are pumping life into the warming weeks of summer, there’s one party everyone’s talking about.
Stepping off the subway, I joined the thousands outside the Rho Fiera, rejoicing in innovation and design. Two kiss hellos, sometimes three out of sheer excitement for the return of pre-pandemic times. Inside the halls, our favourite designers are waiting for the clock to strike half nine. There’s a quiet flurry of activity; last minute vacuuming, the lick of a cloth across a glossy surface.
The return of the Salone del Mobile.
And finally, after two years of kitchen tables becoming company HQs; two years of business up top, pyjamas on the bottom, two years of new design, conceptual thinking and innovation comes to life. And it’s beautiful. — Emily
Two years of downtime saw designers return to the drawing board. Everything we knew about technology, nature, sustainability and work has been flipped on its head. This is back to basics. But what would that look like?

THEMES
Milano Salone del Mobile knocked it out of the park with a full programme of events, installations and launches. Colour and texture were centre stage, with designers unveiling new and archival pieces. Sustainability was key. Our favourite Italian and Spanish brands shared progress on research and innovation, incorporating circular processes and materials to help this industry actively minimise its impact.

Nature First Without losing track of its long history, the Salone was future-focused on bringing eco-awareness into furniture production – using reusable, upcycled, low environmental impact, and FSC/PEFC-certified materials for communal spaces, and urging exhibitors to do likewise.

Ghia explores organic form and texture inspired by nature / Arper
Organic shapes and botanical silhouettes abounded – giving a sense of comfort, accessibility in Ghia from Arper, Twirl by LaCividina, and Enea’s Lore. Everything out is in again. As lockdowns had people everywhere giving thanks for their exterior space, outdoor collections came in from the cold this year. Many designers experimented with design and materials that are equally at home in the living room, office or poolside. UFL / MILANO REPORT 2022

Hue’s the Boss Look no further than Sancal for textile texture, colour and mixing up materials. The brand showcased its new Link and Loop by Raw ‘designers collection’ in bold multitone fabric designed by Kvadrat x Raw Color. At the other end of the (colour spectrum) we went back to nature – with a focus on rich, earthy hues. Eschewing classic black, white and grey, a palette of browns, creams, beige, and terracotta both played into 70s nostalgia (see below) and created a calm, reflective mood.

Feel Good
Origamni-like folds of Taco / LaCividina
A sense of ease and comfort in silhouettes, materials and colours. Woven materials with warm texture and depth. On the one hand, manufacturers were making the most of brand-new materials and technologies. On the other, we returned to a golden age – with the updating and rerelease iconic pieces from the 60s and 70s. Think curves, boucle, and gleaming metallic surfaces. Yet other design houses launched collections paying homage to this era with contemporary classics like Artifort’s Moon and Idda by LaCividina.

Arper’s stand took visitors on a journey through ombre curtained ‘vignettes’
Arper’s exhibition felt like stepping aboard its hopes and dreams. Everywhere you looked was a reminder of its talent and skill to combine both uber-chic functionality with sustainability. And after turning around every corner in the cloud-like experience, I realised this was no dream, this is their reality.

Strikingly thin yet sturdy, Aeeri is the product of design and material alchemy. This feat of high-tech engineering is crafted from a single sheet of steel just 1 millimetre thick. The top pairs with metal or FSC-certified European oak legs in two different heights. If there’s one thing that characterises Sancal, it’s a strong aesthetic. Not only bold shapes but also textures and colours are key to its identity. The products presented in Milan imagines new, joyful, life-affirming shapes and silhouettes – some conceived during confinement – without losing function. A optimistic expressiveness contrasts and complements formal elements. Sancal takes its motto ‘breaking the mould’ seriously!
You couldn’t miss Sancal even if you were blindfolded. The gravitas this brand has for designing pieces that both stick out, and complete any room, is undisputed.

LINK & LOOP / Raw Color Seat of power Loop & Link are part of a collaborative project between Raw Color and Sancal. Raw Color seeks to create new joyful ways of sitting. Visually connected by the cylinder, the geometry softens the volumes of both pieces. Textiles add a warm, tactile touch. The Link pouf is an everyday object turned sculpture – the result of a reflection on alternative furnishing solutions. The Loop family of sofas offers a mix of finishes that break the loop and turn it into a sartorial work through different sizes and special finishes. Like a patchwork, each version combines three hues of the same colour.

BODY / Sylvain Willenz The elegant minimal Versatile Body is a single structure with unlimited possibilities thanks to multiple options of finishes and legs. Its name refers to its backrest, which echoes a human body, in particular the back and shoulders. Several layers of moulded ash wood veneer form a structure with organic, smooth, and simple lines, whether seen from the front or back. Body is an elegant, minimalist chair that works in all types of interiors thanks to its universal and customisable character.
FACES / Nathan Yong Expressions of interest With a clear human approach, Faces tables reflect our desire to unmask ourselves. Artistic and provocative, they are rooted in the essence of Sancal. To create functional tables, the designer shifted away from traditional aesthetics, using unusual shapes which change their appearance depending on the angle of the viewer. These tiny details are not superfluous, as they add volume and make Faces feel both animated and abstract. UFL / MILANO REPORT 2022

ELLE MINI / Rafa García She’s a beauty This family of armchairs and lounge chair is stylised and fashionable, ideal for relaxed, casual seating. LA CIVIDINA /
LaCividina is all about the pleasure of rediscovering the comfort of a personal space. One to feel at ease in, at any place and any time. Organic, cosy shapes are designed to develop naturally around the new needs of the user, who becomes once again the protagonist of design planning.

UFL / MILANO REPORT 2022
Few things make you look chic sitting on your own in an airport, but La Cividina’s Twirl somehow manages to do it. Gone are the days of sitting exposed on a table and chair; this single sofa unites features of a desk, seat and screen, all within a private alcove.
29
TWIRL / Gordon Guillaumier Private space, anyplace Twirl is a seat, a desk and a screen in one. It can serve as a cosy private alcove, realising and uncluttered vision of working environments. Everything revolves around the small support surface, which comes with electrical and USB sockets. Its slender spiral wraps around the desk and seat, acting as both backrest and partition. Available with the spiral starting on either side, Twirl can be used ergonomically by both left and right-handed people. Exquisitely finished: solid wood and marble shine a spotlight on the seat as the focal point, while also elevating the formal, sophisticated design.
BORGO / Antonino Sciortino Surface tension The top of the Borgo coffee table is a thin sheet of steel with precise cuts. Its irregular shapes are inspired by the Cretto di Burri sculpture, which uses concrete blocks to mark out where the buildings of Gibellina stood before they were hit by a devastating earthquake. Strips of different shapes and sizes appear to join and overlap each other on the table’s surface, creating small gaps reminiscent of the streets in the old Sicilian town. UFL / MILANO REPORT 2022
30
IDDA / Antonino Sciortino Lava love The Catanian name for Mount Etna, Idda takes the outline of the volcano – wraps it with winding lava flows, and turns it upside down. Strips of sheet steel are bent by hand and form three or five overlapping layers in a sculptural creation with full, natural shapes. The soft, organic lines are enhanced by smooth welding, which reveals the outstanding technical skills of the makers and adds a delicate touch to tough, industrial materials.
TACO / Alessandro Stabile Innovation collaboration Taco soft chair launches the partnership between Alessandro Stabile and LaCividina. Rethinking padded furniture, the groundbreaking design pulls apart and adds a lighter touch to materials and processes. Taco offers the softness and comfort of a padded chair thanks to its natural felt and slender spring steel core construction and unique production. Featuring both clean-cut shapes and soft lines, Taco showcases LaCividina’s artisanal skills, in a design whose juxtapositions make it a versatile choice for residential and contract applications. THE FACTORY / Ramón Esteve Urban design The Factory collection is instantly recognisable thanks to its clean aluminium profile and metal ‘deploye’ mesh. Inspired by New York’s cast-iron architecture, the collection exudes the builtup feel of some of Manhattan’s grittier districts such as Tribeca and Soho. At the same time, the industrial-feeling structure contrasts with its generously proportioned upholstered cushions, adding a warm and friendly touch to each piece.

GATSBY / Ramón Esteve Take a ribbing The Gatsby collection now includes a modular sofa, side tables and planters that reproduce the shape and feel of etched glass. Its ribbed outer surface continues the style of the corrugated glass set by Gatsby the table lamps, taking us back to the Art Deco era and the Roaring Twenties in America.
VINEYARD / Ramón Esteve A vine time Ramón Esteve designed the Vineyard collection ad hoc for his own country house. Each piece has been conceived in line with the house itself, maintaining a common design language based on the introduction of upright wooden planks framed by a lacquered aluminium profile, in combination with ergonomic upholstery. Each piece has generous, comfortable shapes with castors, providing mobility and creating a versatile, easy line.

MANTA CHAIR / Eugeni Quitllet Feels like floating Versatile Manta adapts to any space, whether in the home, office or public space. Its interchangeable shells and bases allow infinite combinations. Designed with Barcelona’s ARQUITECTO-G, the nanimarquina stand at the Salone was a showcase of colour, sustainability and manufacturing transparency. Nanimarquina unveiled five glorious new products at the 2022 edition of the Salone del Mobile in Milan, including the showstopper: Re-Rug, a collection that emerged from the decision to use the wool leftovers generated by suppliers. The stand displayed ceiling-height piles of recycled wool to introduced these sustainable floor coverings.
I’ve never held my head as high as when I walked onto the rugs at Nanimarquina. Knowing that among 2000 stands, there’s a New Zealand influence gives you a neat feeling. New Zealand merino is used to produce some Nanimarquina rugs – and not just for function. It’s being used loud and proud. The collection suits both homes and commercial spaces, even more so in a post Covid world where the lines between work and leisure are blurred. MARINA / Renato Zamberlan See the sea Marina is a family of tables and coffee tables whose essence lies in the harmonious disproportion between cylindrical legs in Canaletto walnut and a striking marble top. The shapes are inspired by Marina, painted by the Venetian Virgilio Guidi – which evokes a lagoon landscape with a few simple strokes. The Marina collection synthesises the traditional lines of a table just as simply, avoiding superfluous detail, creating powerful and evocative shapes in wood and marble. UFL / MILANO REPORT 2022

Sartorial seating
Designer Sebastian Herkner defines Ulis as his idea of modern comfort. His studio worked to create a soft aesthetic for the armchair, chair and footrest. Curved lines that embrace the user in a comfortable semireclining position. Ulis is space friendly and welcoming with an option of black metallic legs or a single black rotating tube as the central foot, available in two heights.
Bolero’s generous and sinuous shapes invite you with a cosy embrace. The comfortable foam-covered seat and are supported on a wooden base with straight lines, which contrast with the curvaceous upper half. The collection consists of an armchair, two-seater sofa and bench. The name was inspired by the designers’ observations of the finished product. “We think that the arm and back of the sofa resembles a collar, or more specifically a fur collar from the 1920s”.
