Sometimes the structure and governance of Christian denominations makes it difficult to respond promptly to an issue. Occasionally there may not be a unified viewpoint from within a denomination. As a result, the Church appears not to have a view or, more importantly, not to be concerned. As we approach the Scottish election an initiative aims to provide some coherence and unity over Christian involvement in the election campaign.

Churches Vote has brought together CARE for Scotland, Christians Count, Evangelical Alliance, the Roman Catholic Parliamentary Office, and the Scottish Churches Parliamentary Office with the aim of representing a Christian viewpoint to politicians and the media,

There has probably never before been such a significant resource to inform the Christian public ahead of an election. The strength of the Churches Vote campaign is that it engages the widest possible range of Christian denominations and organisations to emphasise the central role that the Church plays in Scottish society. At the same time, each of the collaborating organisations will continue to carry out their own activities, building on their particular expertise and strengths.

Part of the statement by church leaders says: “… elections are community events in which “my” vote is not only for me but also an opportunity for each of us to express the needs of the whole community. Let us look beyond the selfish and fearful parts of ourselves and aspire to build a society where everyone is able to live with dignity.”
