Lilla Dorvilus is one of 60 food sellers chosen by Aprosifa to prepare hot meals for local families in Carrefour Feuilles, a deprived neighbourhood in Port-au-Prince. Soon after the earthquake struck Haiti, Christian Aid provided support to its long-standing partner, the Association for the Promotion of Integral Family Healthcare (APROSIFA) to fund its hot food programme.
Aprosifa has since contracted 60 food vendors in Carrefour, each one serving one meal a day for 80 people in the community. Each day the programme feeds 4,800 people in Carrefour who would otherwise go hungry. It also stimulates the economy as food is being purchased in local markets that reopened soon after the quake. For Lilla and other street vendors, the programme gives them a small income
and the chance to help families in their communities. Some of the dishes include fish stew and beans and rice. Lilla added “a hot meal a day is better than 50 gourdes (80p) a day which can only buy bread and sugar”.
