PRESIDENT'S GREETING Welcome to a new decade and more excitingly, welcome to the first issue of the Probe for 2020!

A big thank you goes out to the 2019 UDSS committee for all of their efforts and incredible events that were pulled off. This year we welcome another fantastic committee of 27 members, to ensure students are being well represented and are provided with ample opportunities to enjoy themselves outside of dental school.

As incoming President this year, I hope to not only help everyone enjoy this course just a little bit more, but also advocate for changes that will improve our education and student experience for now and the years to come. The UDSS already has some small changes in the works to make sure this year is better than ever, you may even see a new logo making an appearance later in the year!

UDSS has had a smashing start to the year so far.

Our first event was a combined effort between Ed Reps Pauline and Bede and Research Rep Simran hosting an ‘Intro to Dentistry’ lecture series for DMD1. It was definitely an insightful evening, and an event that I hope to see continued over the coming years. I know both Education and Research representatives have an array of events coming this year so stay tuned for those!

Junior Social Representatives Ebony and Lili also put in the hard yards to organise another fantastic Prime and Bond! To give you something to look forward to throughout the year,

Junior Social and Sports Representatives will be hosting many more events to give you a chance to relax, socialise and take a break from the Clinic, Optech, or 5hr lecture grind (sorry DMD1). Not to mention, Senior Social Representatives are already busy organising the annual Dental Dinner for 2020 which is guaranteed to be nothing short of spectacular.

This year, July specifically, we will also welcome Professor Hien Ngo as our new Head of School and Dean. Prof. Ngo comes to us with a wealth of experience in dentistry, Prosthodontics and most importantly, running dental schools! Of course, we must give a huge thank you to Prof. Anthonappa for taking the reins and continuing to oversee the dental school until Prof. Ngo’s arrival, and we wish him all the best with his future endeavours.

On a slightly more serious note – a big focus for me in 2020 is making sure student wellbeing is brought to the forefront. With a lot of course changes currently underway we need to make sure to look out for ourselves and each other! The lovely class reps Gurjyot and Mona (DMD1), Ethan and Yash (DMD2), Lisa and Han (DMD3) and Jason and Charn (DMD4) are here to listen to any course concerns and help to make these heard so please get in touch with them if you need.

With all of that said – I look forward to a fantastic year, there’s loads to come so buckle in!

Why dentistry? What’s your favourite topic so far?

I wanted to be in a profession where I could combine my two greatest passions - healthcare and teaching. I also believe oral and dental health is an overlooked area by many people and wanted to make an impact on the oral health of disadvantaged groups while also changing the perception of dentists. My favourite topic has by far been dental public health!

One thing you’ve learnt from the DMD course/advice for first years?

In dentistry you have to be prepared, but even more so, be adaptable. No matter how much you plan, something will always change on the day and you have to be ready for it. You may go into an appointment ready to do an exam and come out doing an emergency endo.

Favourite food?

Tofu all day every day.

Why dentistry? What’s your favourite topic so far?

I always wanted to work in the health field, I love working with people and I also like being hands-on, doing something practical that has a bit of an artistic element to it. My favourite topic is probably Paediatric Dentistry, as it involves all branches of dentistry with the added challenge of requiring skills in communicating with young children.

One thing you’ve learnt from the DMD course/advice for first years?

It is a full-on course, more contact hours than almost any other degree, there is a lot of content, but if you are passionate about it, it can be really fun. My biggest piece of advice would be to make sure you have an outlet outside of uni, a fun hobby or something to take your mind off the study.

The importance of patient management and building rapport.

I was working in cancer research prior to starting dentistry so I'm particularly interested in cancers of the oral cavity and how they are unique and can be treated differently from other diseases One thing you’ve learnt from the DMD course/advice for first years?

Reading, eating and watching cricket, in no particular order.

Favourite food?

Ahhh this is the hardest question!! I'll go with the Chocolate Mousse from Koko Black because I'm craving it at this very moment.

Take it easy What is one achievement you're really proud of?

Why dentistry? What’s your favourite topic so far?

Bad teeth can ruin the most beautiful smiles. I believe beautiful and healthy teeth are a must-have for everyone and I’d love to help everyone achieve that! Also, I find teeth absolutely adorable. My favourite topic has been prosthodontics so far, because I believe it has the biggest impact in dentistry and there’s so much more to learn and investigate in this field!

One thing you’ve learnt from the DMD course/advice for first years?

I’ve learned that it’s okay to not be perfect at everything XD What is something you've done before that you think everyone else should try at least once?

Why dentistry?

I love the mix of science, art and working with people!

One thing you’ve learnt from the DMD course/advice for first years?

While most of us are focussed and high-achieving people, it is important to maintain a healthy life balance at all times.

Getting the HD in dentistry is not worth it if you have to sacrifice your mental health and wellbeing. Your best is all that anyone can ask for and sometimes to do that, you need to take breaks.

What are some of your favourite past times?

Learning languages (recently Auslan - Australian Sign Language), playing music and gym Favourite food?

One thing you’ve learnt from the DMD course/advice for first years?

Stay level-headed. Lots of things may (will) frustrate you, but it’s important to remind yourself of your end goal and remain calm when needed.

What is something you've done before that you think everyone else should try at least once?

Try avocado in a dessert (esp smoothies). Don’t @ me ‘til you’ve tried it!

What are some of your favourite past times?

I have learned to be patient. Other students should try not to fixate themselves on the negatives of the course, no course is perfect. And always set aside time for things non-teeth related!

Why dentistry?

Dentistry is art and science in a combo meal. You get to do lots of procedures that stimulate your brain whilst being able to help people! The microbiology of biofilms is what got me interested in dentistry in the first place and still continues to fascinate me.

Why dentistry?

There are so many reasons but one of the main reasons is my lifelong passion for learning science and medicine. As I grew older, I realised I loved working with my hands and the practical side of dentistry just made sense to me. Nothing makes me happier than the idea that one day I'll be able to put a smile on someone's face from the work that I do.

One thing you’ve learnt from the DMD course/advice for first years?

Get involved as much as you can!

What are some of your favourite past times?

Why dentistry? What's your favourite topic?

I really love being apart of the healthcare realm. So I felt that making a positive impact to oral health and promoting health education as a dentist would be an interesting career for me.

Pathology has to be my favourite topic, just because it allows you to dive deep into diseases but also allows you to have a holistic view.

What is one achievement you’re really proud of?

I am really proud of the Butterfly Effect, a club I created during my undergrad that promotes mental health through random acts of kindness.

If it ever comes back, order the $10 popcorn chicken bucket from KFC and gravy and fries and dunk it all together.

The one time I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to redo a prep in optech... jk, there have been a FEW timesâ&#x20AC;Ś I can also do the splits in all directions which is kind of cool if I may say so myself.

Treat every patient as if they were a family member or close friend. You'll find that your standard of work will be more consistent and to a higher level!

SPORTS REPORT Our 2020 sports reps, Sarah and Anooshree, kicked off the semester introducing 3 UDSS volleyball and 1 mixed soccer team. Being a part of these UDSS social sports teams is a great way to make new friends across all DMD years while showing off your athletic side. No Hard Fillings , one of the vball teams, play every Tuesday at the Rec Centre versing other UWA volleyball teams. Party Enamels and Amalgang both play on Wednesday, so could have a chance of battling each other head-to-head soon. At the moment, Party Enamels is on the top having won 2 out of their 3 games, while the other 2 teams have won 1 each.

Bendodontists

Meanwhile on Wednesdays, down at UWA Sports Park, our soccer team Bendodontists set alight the soccer field with their impressive dribbling skills! They won their first round with a score of 5-2.

Unfortunately, due to COVID 19, all social sports have been cancelled until further notice. Our sports reps had registered a team under UDSS for the HBF Run for a Reason that was set to occur on the 24th of May, however this has also been cancelled.

The Sports Day at BOUNCE Trampoline Park has been postponed to semester 2. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates!

1. ADSA CONVENTION ADSA has hosted the annual conventions inviting dental and oral health students from across Australia and NZ for the past 11 years. This year’s Convention planned for 29th June - 5th July, however, has been cancelled due to the interstate travel restrictions and the recent socialdistancing rules. Please follow ADSA on Facebook for any updates or changes.

2. ADSA BLOOD DRIVE With the new COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian Red Cross has had up to 800 people a day cancelling blood donating appointments. There are currently, and will continue to be, road accident patients, women with complications during childbirth, and cancer patients who need blood transfusions to survive their treatments.

Donating blood means you are saving lives, but there are also health benefits for you as the donator. Studies show that blood donations reduce your risk of strokes (Salonen, et al. 1998), cancers (Zacharski, et al. 2008) and depression (Musick & Wilson, 2003), AND it increases your happy hormones (Borgonovi, 2008).

Join the “University of Western Australia (UWA) ADSA” blood drive competition and get ready to give! If you’re not eligible, not to worry— you may be eligible for donating plasma or you could just help us promote donating blood!

COVID-19: MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR QUARANTINE Make a plan!

If you are like most of us, you will have fallen into the trap of treating self-iso as a holiday.

Sadly, we still need to keep ourselves on top of things! You might find it helpful to keep a strict daily calendar of things you want to achieve. (It may also be good evidence in case someone asks whether you have been on top of study?)

Keep balanced Include time to relax, exercise, socialise (over video call) and sleep in this schedule.

Hobbies Do creative artwork (this will help with hand skills!)

Learn a language (might impress your patients?)

Read a book

Teamwork A team study session goes a long way, especially if you are struggling getting through content on your own. Give a friend a call and just study togetherâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;this will hold both of you accountable!

Look after your mental health Self-iso is tough, but don't forget we are all in this together! Please take the time to reach out if you are struggling.
