o, another semester over...well close enough over...as long as well a pass our exMedia Representative | ams! So good luck everybody!

Semester 1 has been pretty packed, with Claire Waldock Prime & Bond and Shipwrekt bought to you by our Junior Social Reps (Keenan & Reezy) and our Sports and Wellbeing Reps—Michael and Lionel— organizing the Sports Day and Table Tennis Tournament.

Scholastically, which—although some may not admit it—is why we are all here, there has been a massive amount of work and achievement from our newly formed UDSS education sub-committee. They have all put in a lot of effort to help make sure dentistry runs as smooth as possible for all of us.

And, of course, the end of semester also means it’s time for Issue 2 of the Probe, which you are currently reading. Hope you all enjoy it and have great mid-year break...all 7 days of it (don’t waste it!)

I

t’s the business time of year – exam period! Seventeen weeks of a semester has you tired as hell, but you got hours of study ahead, sleepless nights, a whole load of stress – but hey! At least you have a whole load of holidays to look forward to afterwards – what is it officially? A week? FML

In other news, unfortunately our grant application for the common room didn’t make the final round - but we’re not giving up. On the education side of things, we’ve been working hard to try and make some changes. The biggest change should be seen next semester.

After many meetings and pushing hard from our end, a strict instruction has been handed down from the head of school that all guidebooks must be ready by the end of week one – including every single date of every single assessment in the semester!

Gone will be the days where staff forget about assessments, the constant postponing and waiting.

We should be able to organise our study from the very beginning! I say should – I never underestimate the chances of things going wrong at OHCWA.

Things to look forward to: Discounts along Hampton road: Baskin Robbins seems keen to get in on the action, and we’re planning to contact a whole lot more over the holidays.

FREE CPD lectures: students can now attend CPD lectures from the ADA WA for free!

This deal should continue for years to come We’re hoping to get an internationally renowned lecturer to come in and have a chat about implants UDSS nominations and elections: This should kick off early next semester. This year we’re looking to change the constitution to include incentives for UDSS committee members. You’ll hear all about the incentives and what the positions involve via email, however start to have a think about what role suits you!

In saying that, if this isn’t done you can expect us to cause some trouble and get multiple parties involved as having guidebooks and assessments dates in week one IS university policy. Our feedback forms are getting filled in quite a lot, which is great! These will be summarised and sent to the head of school, year committees and the faculty Till next time, evaluation committee.

Prime & Bond, the annual fresher event, was held at the Claremont hotel this year and it's safe to say it was a huge success!

First years to fifth years were mingling and treated to a night off having to worry about teeth, The event was DJ'd by the excellent DJ Vibez, who everyone agreed did a great job. On to the next event!

A

fter the tom foolery of Prime and Bond, the thoroughly nautical, ship-shape event Shipwrekt happened on the evening of the of the 22nd May 2015.

ON AN ＡＣＴＵＡＬ ＢＯＡT!!!

The deck was swabbed , the sails were hoisted and many a glass raised—and everyone “shipwrekt”.

Any nautical celebration would not be complete without a plethora of seafaring songs—from the most appropriate “I’m on a boat” — to the entire crew’s heartfelt rendition of “My heart will go on”...

Of course, unlike Titanic, this tale had a happy ending, and all our mariners ended up back on terra firma— albeit some still green-faced with seasickness and scurvy (well that was the official story anyway…).

UDSS Sports Day #1 Sports and wellbeing representatives | Michael Yuan & Lionel thompson

The UDSS, twice a year, organises a sports day where all the year’s students can come together and enjoy some fun and fitness. This year’s event was met with a good turnout by all years. The day’s events included a 5 on 5 basketball match, a 7 on 7 volleyball match and an all-in indoor soccer match to finish proceedings. There were some keen athletes mixed in with some eager newbies, but the day’s proceedings were inviting and encouraged all attendees to participate in at least one of the sports. Basketball got the people excited with fast break layups and great teamwork, volleyball had a more friendly atmosphere which got all involved in, and soccer was left to those with any remaining energy. For those who participated, a great effort and a great attitude – you helped made the day fun! A special commendations to the girls who mixed it with the fellas on

the basketball court and volleyball courts.

Don’t forget: it is always nice to break a sweat and keep fit when studying/working in a spine- and neck-breaking industry, and a healthy body leads to a healthy mind. Plans for UDSS Sports Day Semester 2 are well underway, and the organisers are considering a few outdoor sports to help people soak up some Vitamin D. Suggestions and feedback are always welcome to your Sports and Wellbeing Officers…

Nepal Dental Outreach Volunteer for Around GoodPeople | Zi Lin Sun

I

n January 2015, I was presented with the opportunity to travel to Nepal in order to participate in a dental volunteering outreach undertaken by Around GoodPeople.

Around Good People (AGP), in collaboration with Himal Dental Hospital, is a not for profit grassroots organisation established to empower the marginalised and disadvantaged people in the mountainous rural communities of Nepal. Grassroots activism relies on the basic rights to freedom of action and expression by individuals to create change for the good and wellbeing of the people.

The trip exceeded all my expectations; it was the perfect combination of travel, culture, adventure and dental experience. In the mere two weeks I was not only exposed to more dentistry than I could have hoped for, I was also deeply touched by the warm Nepalese people, their culture and their beautiful country.

Around GoodPeople

The majority of my time in Nepal was spent in Macchapucchre, a picturesque rural village at the base of Fish Tail Mountain, a scared mountain offlimits to climbing. In the mornings we were fortunate enough to go on hikes, see nearby Buddhist monasteries, have tea at the chief’s house and go to the local hot springs. From 8am until dusk, we were in the community hall made dental clinic, providing free dental treatment to those of the village and many who had travelled hours to see us.

There was screening, cleaning, restoring, OHI and performing extractions of varying complexity on many patients, many of whom have never experi-

enced dental care. We were aided by several Nepalese dental hygienists and two qualified Nepalese dentists, all of whom were fluent in English. The experience I gained as a dental student and growth that I gained as a person was priceless.

On the way back to Kathmandu, we spent some time in Pokhara, the adventure city of Nepal. We went paragliding, kayaking, hiking, some of us had spa days, some opted for nights out, it was definitely a great end to the trip.

I was a part of one group of Australian dental students that travelled to different rural villages in Nepal between November and January in 2015. Together we were able to make a huge impact in a meaningful and sustainable way.

I would have to strongly recommend this program to anyone interested, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I will forever cherish the amazing friendships and wonderful memories I’ve made along the way.
