PRESIDENT’S REPORT It’s shaping up to be a big year on the OHCWA campus! January 29th saw the commencement of the DMD course and all the fun stuff that a bunch of freshers entails – arguments over lockers, constant timetable changes and hours of tooth drawing fun!

The 5th years are large and in charge, although somewhat of a rare species around campus these days as they have emerged from the oppressive cocoon that is OHCWA and taken flight far, far, away…..well as far as they can possibly get.

Our darling 3rd years are just beginning their foray into clinic, and while they are all friends right now, let’s just wait until the “War for the edentulous patients 2013” gets underway. They are working on their orthodontic wire bending, and can often be seen in the lab until the wee hours stabbing themselves with wires and cursing old Adam for ever coming up with that crib.

As usual, the 4th years are 3 weeks into the year, and on the brink of nervous breakdown. We have come to the realisation that we would need approximately 3000 clinical hours to complete our requirements and this has coincided with our descent into madness. Please avoid the 4th years.

UDSS has some pretty sweet events lined up for your tasting pleasure this year, and it all kicks off with FRESHER WELCOME! We somehow managed to overcome the odds to organise what is shaping up to be an off the hook night for one and all. March 8th is the date, so do yourself a favour and mark it in your diary while stocking up on Panadol and Gatorade for the next morning.

A couple a regular events are being trialled this year, the first being “Tea Break Time”, a monthly sundowner for staff and students to get their drink on together at the Byrneliegh, titanium marking not included. The second is our UDSS Cake Stall, set up as a fundraiser for the Dental Dinner, and also a way of ensuring a steady supply of carious lesions for you to treat – find it just outside the waiting room every month!

Well, that’s all the juicy goss I’m willing to give for now, stay tuned for the next edition of Probe, where it will be Ricky’s turn to write and I’ll be up in the lab working…probably with Tim O’Hehir…..seriously, that guy never leaves…

FIFTH YEAR REPORT

 "Fifth year makes it all worthwhile", "don't worry you're almost in fifth year" and "just get to fifth year, it's so much better". This is all I heard through 4 years of pain and anguish. As a result, I was apprehensive starting this year...could it actually live up to the hype?

Would the 'reward' of fifth year just be another headache? Could I actually enjoy going to uni?

Turns out...fifth year is actually pretty damn good. I mean, we still do long hours, the dentistry can be pretty intense and OHCWA is still an organisational nightmare, but it's definitely better. One lecture a week (if that) makes for easy study and treatment planning is a hell of a lot simpler (at least at DHS). The tutors are definitely an improvement (keep an eye out for Jimmy Ho) and I can't say I miss Form 40 or spending hours in lab. Unfortunately we don't get to see as much of each other anymore; but on the other side of the coin the people we do see, we are getting to know even better. And any day you get to pull out some teeth is a good day.

So don't worry guys, fifth year makes it all worthwhile.

FOURTH YEAR REPORT Now that we’re 4th years, we’ve all suddenly gained all this insight into the mad world behind the glass, we never thought possible, so time to share some of this knowledge with y’all youngin’s.

Firstly the 4th years do not take any responsibility for any emotional disturbances, loss of sleep, anxiety attacks, false expectations or raised hopes associated with this article. Our experiences are solely isolated to the one fine year group and only aim to inspire you in you're pursuit of dentistry.

However we will share some of wisdom if you must insist.

1. 8am lectures- optional for some, not for others. Basically if you want parking at OHCWA or anywhere near OHCWA, or don’t want a parking ticket, it’s worth getting up for these babies.

2. Break after 8am lectures- most useful for a quick 3hr trip down the road for some caffeinated beverages, according to this reporter. You survived the 8am, you got yourself to the 8am, you stayed awake during the 8am (well mostly) then you deserve it.

3. Break from having a break- not too much of the good life now, you’ll forget that you’re meant to be a prisoner of the Glass Prison. Pay a visit to the library, the quiet section of the library, or if you’re feeling really brave you may enter the lab.

4. The lab- so it’s established itself already as a black hole, where time and happiness are sucked out of life. Remember; there is life outside the lab, you have a home, you have friends, food is also a requirement!

5. Tooth preps- now to all you 3rd years, you all remember Op Tech (sorry for the shiver that sent down your spine, it has that same effect on us too). Clinic is not op tech. You can relax now. Trust your skills. The tutor just wants you to save the patient from a slow, painful, caries related death.

6. Manage your time- now let’s be serious here, we’ve all heard about this urban myth going around, about this thing called FUN… apparently it exists. Make time for it! You’re only a student once (or the case of the 1st years, more than once)! Don’t take yourself too seriously! I expect to see you all at Fresher Welcome and other fun associated events run by this year’s UDSS being happy, joyous and most of all LOOOSSE! 4th Year reps, over and out!

THIRD YEAR REPORT It feels as though we are back at uni again a few days after sitting our final exam last year… Our hopes and dreams that this year would be better than the last were all crushed within the first few hours back at uni – being forced to sit through 8 hours of straight lectures. On top of that, we are all trying to adapt to the new 30 min breaks that we now get…barely enough time to finish the sandwich and juicebox mum packed in our lunchbox.

Parking still sucks... A big thanks to the construction crew for stealing 60% of our 32 allocated car spaces! Oh and a shout out to Charlie’s nurses for taking the other 30%! And let’s not forget the parking inspector…booking us even though uni hasn’t resumed…well when he can manage to copy the rego properly!

Still don’t know why we can’t wear shorts and singlet’s in clinic on 40 degree days – don’t worry we are fighting for this as your UDSS representatives PS. Greg and Jon are currently in possession of 12 lockers. Rent starts at $10 per week, please email Sheona ASAP to secure one today.

DRUMROLL PLEASE…INTRODUCING THE DMDʼS!!!

DMD REPORT From the very first day, we were told to think of ourselves as ‘pioneers’; however, we all know that’s just a euphemism for ‘guinea pigs’. Being the new “kids” on the block, we’ve had to adjust to a new environment, including the very hot weather, finding shady places to sit during our 30-minute lunches, and thinking about what to wear to uni every day (the girls found it difficult to find fully enclosed shoes that were not ugly)! The best thing about our year group is that we’re made up of a wide range of characters, from various backgrounds.

Learning new skills has been a major part of our routine, such as learning how to address our lecturers correctly, which is strange because some of us are the same age as those teaching us. We’ve heard that Mr McGee doesn’t like to vary his assessments (we’re still doing the plasticine models and anatomical drawings of a tooth). Professor Slack-Smith has tried her best to convince us that dental research is worth doing but many of us are beyond convincing. The infamous Michelle has taught us the importance of washing our hands properly – after the exposure of our hands under UV light, we didn’t need to be reminded twice. Dr. Lejamanoski has entertained us with her stories from the front line, always telling us to remind her at the next lecture about the story of Mr. Smith and Mrs. Jones.

The opportunity to take radiographs of Dexter the dummy was a steep learning curve as most of us find it hard to keep awake for the radiology lectures, conducted in near total darkness, often after lunch. The state-of-the-art Simodont machines have provided us with the chance to improve our manual dexterity, but not without frustration. Despite our grumbling, we are all looking forward to discovering what the new DMD course has to offer, and we’d like to thank the dental community at UWA for welcoming us, and we hope to meet all of you soon.

DENTAL D INNER 2012

The night of all nights arrived. The one event of the year that dental students actually take time from their studies to have a shower, brush their hair and dress to the nines for a night to remember. The Annual Dental Dinner Spectacular was again amongst us and we were all ready to party.

The Hyatt Ballroom was decorated beautifully, with tables given the special touch of every guests face adorning each centrepiece. All the ladies, of course, looked stunning and the boys somehow managed to scrub up as they all looked very dapper, transforming into fine young men.

A delicious three course dinner, free flowing drinks and a shiny dance floor to show off our moves: it was a recipe for success. Of course to top it off was a talented video showcasing the 5th years’ ability to sing and dance (if Gangnam Styling counts as dancing). Many great memories were made; and the many photos taken soon reminded those of what happened for those whose minds started to blur by the end of the night.

In the blink of an eye, the night came to end. For the most of us, it marked the end of another year in our journey through dental school. To the rest, a farewell was made to another group of students let loose into the big wide world, dangerously armed with the licence to drill. We all wish the dental graduates of 2012 all the best for their futures’ and hope all their wildest hopes and dreams come true.

PSVP Program 2012: After a busy year, the Primary School visits program finished the year with a bang, with two visits to schools (Neerigen Brook and Westfield Park Primary School) and one to the kids at Unicare. Although it was a long journey to reach the schools in Armadale, it was great to really get out there and reach kids who didn’t have a great deal of access dental services. Our program involved teaching them about the dentist, oral hygiene, tooth trauma and diet – using methods including origami chatter boxes, dental student developed Youtube video (check it out), powerpoints and hands on demonstrations. For research purposes, we got the classes to answer quizzes to assess their baseline knowledge and effectiveness of our teaching methods.

The Unicare visit was an amazing and enjoyable day for all involved, kids and students alike. Despite their wee age, children aged 3 and up were eager to get involved with the dental initiative, often surprising students with the grasp of the information delivered.

A small group of the PSVP team also visited unicamp for kid, conducting an oral health station. The kids got actively involved, some of them even beating the stuffing out of the ‘evil decay monster’ – an unfortunate dental student who had unwittingly volunteered for the position.

After successfully attaining several grants for research, the committee (basically CK, Jen and Ryan) finished up writing research to enter the Colgate Bright Smiles competition – in which the winning entrants travel internationally to meet up and discuss oral healthcare for children. The conference is held in Korea this year, so fingers crossed we get in! Mad props to CK who has graduated already, but put in a huge amount of effort in getting it done.

Despite all the initial difficulties encountered in 2012, there were so many significant milestones accomplished. Not only did the program receive national recognition through research grants, but of the upmost importance, the program has delivered oral health education to over 1300 children in Perth in a 12 month period! As dental students, we should be proud of the contribution we are making to improving not only the oral health, but general well-being of Western Australia children.

With regard to 2013, the program wants to focus on getting more people out there to help out, teach kids in need, get into new schools, and most importantly to have a good time. So get around it!
