Clinical Issues and Lessons in Implants, Extractions and Failure to Diagnose Cases Michael R. Ragan, DMD, JD, LLM This course addresses the expanding role of dentists in health care and increases in clinical risk and liability exposure. Strategies to improve patient care and enhance clinical knowledge will be highlighted through a comprehensive review of implant, extraction and failure-to-diagnose oral cancer case studies.

Learning objectives: • Increase clinical knowledge and risk awareness through case studies • Identify common issues in implant, extraction and failure-to-diagnose cases and use them in an effort to improve patient care • Understand the key clinical risks that lead to untoward outcomes and malpractice claims Dr. Michael R. Ragan is managing partner of a Miami-based law firm, with 25 years of experience as a defense trial attorney.

After receiving a BA from Syracuse University, he received a DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, a JD from Georgetown University Law Center, and an LLM in health law from Loyola University College of Law. Dr. Ragan has held academic appointments at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, the University of Florida College of Dentistry, and the Georgetown University School of Dentistry. Dr. Ragan is presently professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Nova Southeastern College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Ragan practiced dentistry for 15 years and also spent seven years supervising health care professional liability claims within the insurance industry. Dr. Ragan is a member of the board of directors of Fortress Insurance Company and chairman of the claims committee.

Dr. Ragan is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the American College of Legal Medicine.

An Oral Infection That Can Kill— Diagnosing and Treating Periodontal Infection in the 21st Century Thomas E. Baldwin, DDS, MAGD Periodontal infection has been shown to be directly related to and may be a major cause of heart disease, stroke, brain abscesses and other systemic diseases. Its incidence has been estimated at affecting over 50% of people over 30 years of age, and over 70% of those over 65 years of age. This is why it is extremely important that all dentists know and understand the microbiological basis of diagnosis and treatment of periodontal infection.

Following attendance at Dr. baldwin's course dentists and hygienists will be able to: • Properly diagnose periodontal infection • Explain the problem and its solution to the patient in easy to understand terms • Treat periodontal infection in an effective and successful manner, and to prevent its reoccurrence • Make the treatment of periodontal infection a profitable and spiritually rewarding center for the dental office • Know better how to prevent periodontal infection before it occurs This presentation is appropriate for general dentists, prosthodontists, periodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, hygienists and assistants.

Dr. Baldwin graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School in 1970. After serving for two years in the U.S. Army, he joined a practice as an associate dentist. He then taught full-time for two years at the dental school, during which time he opened a private practice in general dentistry in Towson, Maryland, in 1975. He received a master of science in nutrition from the Clayton College of Natural Health in 2005. He has been awarded a mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry along with fellowship and accreditation from the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. Dr. Baldwin retired from active dentistry in 2008 and now practices nutritional counseling and mentoring in dental practices.

Clues to Your Patients’ Health History: The Most Common PhysicianPrescribed Medications Harold L. Crossley, DDS, PhD your patients are living longer thanks to their medications but many of the physician-prescribed medications used by your patients have dental implications and side effects affecting your treatment plan. Some medications can cause a “burning mouth syndrome” and, in fact, others may cause sexual dysfunction. This presentation includes the indications, contraindications and side effects of the most commonly prescribed medications.

This four hour seminar includes information that satisfies the new Maryland State board of Dental Examiners CE requirement for “Proper prescribing and disposal of medications” required for licensure renewal.

At the conclusion of this course, the attendees will know: • Medications that could adversely interact with dental drugs • What oral side effects may be caused by these medications • Maximum doses for commonly prescribed pain medications • How to combine analgesics to maximize their effects • Alternatives to opioids for treatment of post-operative pain • What statins are less likely to be affected by grapefruit juice interactions • Indications for metformin (Glucophage) • A dental drug interaction that could be fatal • Current recommendations for subacute bacterial endocarditis (SbE) and orthopedic prosthesis prophylaxis This seminar is appropriate for dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants.

Harold L. Crossley, DDS, PhD is professor emeritus at the University of Maryland Dental School. A native of Rhode Island, Dr. Crossley received a bachelor of science in pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island in 1964. He later was awarded master of science (1970) and doctoral degrees (1972) in pharmacology. The University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore awarded Dr. Crossley his DDS in 1980. His role as liaison between the classroom and his dental practice produced a practical approach to understanding the pharmacology of drugs used in the dental office.

Dr. Crossley has co-authored a number of articles and four books dealing with a variety of topics within the field of pharmacology. Other areas of expertise include the pharmacology of street drugs and chemical dependency.

Dr. Crossley serves on the Maryland State Dental Association’s Well-Being Committee, was a member of the University Interdisciplinary Committee for Drug Abuse Education and served on the Governor’s Commission on Prescription Drug Abuse. He is an active member of Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society, the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists and an honorary member of the Thomas B. Hinman Dental Society. He was the recipient of the 2008 Gordon Christensen Lecturer Recognition award presented by the Chicago Dental Society and the recipient of the 2012 Award of Distinction presented by the Academy of Dentistry International for his efforts in Continuing Dental Education. He has been a consultant for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and other law enforcement agencies since 1974.

Drawing on this unique background, Dr. Crossley has become nationally and internationally recognized as an expert on street drugs and chemical dependency as well as the clinical pharmacology of dental drugs.

Thursday, July 28, 8 a.m.–noon

Restorative Endodontics: A Modern Standard of Care for Long-Term Success Bradley Trattner, DDS Restorative endodontics (RE) is based on minimally invasive root canal preparations and bioceramic bonded obturation that enhance the long term biomechanical success of the endodontically treated tooth. RE is based on a biologic approach that emphasizes debridement and disinfection rather than shaping for obturation. This real world endodontics presentation is highly practical and will describe numerous facets of clinical endodontics, utilizing a “case based learning approach.” Premolar and molar clinical cases will be discussed in detail that will demonstrate both the basic and advanced instrumentation and obturation technique, as well some technique variations to handle more challenging cases.

A demo station with hand pieces and plastic blocks will be set up and available to provide participants the opportunity to use "real world" techniques and to witness first-hand how they will change the way they practice endodontics.

During this lecture participants will learn: • The scientific concepts for success by incorporating a few new simple steps during clinical care • How to properly use the ESX® NiTi rotary file and instrumentation system • Gain insight into the use of the new bioceramic materials in both surgical and nonsurgical endodontic care This seminar is appropriate for dentists.

A diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and a member of the College of Diplomates, Dr. Bradley Trattner received both his DDS and certificate in endodontics from the University of Maryland Dental School. He holds staff positions at Sinai Hospital and teaches endodontics in the departments of Endodontics and Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the University of Maryland Dental School. He has maintained a private practice

in endodontics in Baltimore, Maryland, for over 25 years and has been voted “Baltimore’s Best” endodontist by baltimore Magazine since 2002. He is a past president of both the Maryland Association of Endodontists and Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity as well as a member of the Pierre Fauchard International Honor Academy and is a fellow of the American College of Dentists. He is presently president-elect of the University of Maryland Dental School Alumni Board. He has lectured extensively nationally and is a clinical advisor and certified lecturer for Real World Endo.

Dentistry’s Crowning Moment Lary George, DDS Many factors play a role in developing fixed restorations that adhere to the goals of fit, form and function. There are times the procedure will need to be altered or redone in order to achieve the desired outcome.

This presentation shines a light on the determinants involved with minimizing detours and taking your fixed cases to completion.

After the completion of this course, the participant will: • Describe the procedural variances that affect the outcome of treatment • Establish criteria to determine whether to continue adjusting the restoration or start over with a new impression • Decrease stress at the cementation appointment This seminar is appropriate for dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants.

Dr. Lary George graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1988. After a stint in private practice, he furthered his education at the Ohio State University, completing the advanced prosthodontics program in 1995. He went back into private practice and in 2001 joined the communication team at Green Dental Lab where he worked for 10 years consulting with dentists on their fixed, removable and implant cases. Today, Dr. George serves as director of professional education for the largest network of dental laboratories in the United States, National Dentex. With significant clinical

and laboratory experience, Dr. George has a unique perspective that can enhance your practice. He has lectured extensively throughout the United States on the subjects of fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics and his energetic presentation style makes for a memorable learning experience.
