Why organize a program in ECUADOR?

Ecuador is one of the smallest countries in South America. However, it is a country that is rich in cultural, geographic, and biological diversity. In Ecuador you can explore moorlands and snow-capped volcanoes in the Andes; dry forests, beaches, and mangroves on the Pacific coast; tropical forests in the Amazon; and a great biodiversity and world heritage site in the Galapagos Islands. Additionally, Ecuador is characterized for being one of the best countries in Latin America to learn Spanish due to its clear and neutral accent. 3

Why

QUITO?

Quito is the capital of Ecuador. It is located 2,850 meters above sea level, a couple of kilometers north of the 0º0´0” parallel also known as the Equator. It is known as the city of “eternal spring”. As it is located in the northern central part of the country, it is easy to access and easily connects to the other areas of Ecuador. Additionally, the capital hosts a wide array of gastronomical diversity from all the regions which tourists can enjoy.

Quito is a modern city and has a colonial center that is amongst the best preserved in Latin America. For this reason, Quito was the first city to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978. Its colonial center is lauded as one of the most beautiful in Latin America, as it showcases a great number of churches and colonial buildings.

Temperature in Quito varies from 18ºC during the day to 8ºC at night, with only two seasons: “Summer” (dry season) from June to September and “Winter” (rainy season) from October to May. 5

• Universidad de Las Américas (UDLA) is the largest private educational institution in Ecuador. FACULTY-LED PROGRAM

Programs organized by UDLA in all their areas of knowledge* Those are flexible, tailor-made, academic programs which include: • Talks with UDLA professors on specific topics. • Field trips. • Community Outreach Activities. • Participation of international students in UDLA community activities, such as clubs and others. • Accommodation with host families. • Transportation. • Food.

According to each program, international students may spend between one and eight weeks experiencing what it is like to be a student of UDLA. * Academic Program

HEALTH SCIENCE

This program emphasizes on the learning of the Ecuadorian health system. In this program, international students can have a comparative study of the public and private systems and learn about the ancestral medicine used in some of the regions in the country. This academic activity includes talks, field trips in Quito, Otavalo, and the Amazon region as well as a cultural immersion by being hosted by Ecuadorian host families and sharing activities with UDLA students.

Additionally, within the Global Health* program, the international students can carry out their medical rotations at hospitals which have agreements with UDLA. The program is organized jointly with the faculties of Health and Medicine Science. The Faculty of Health Science offers majors in: Veterinary Medicine, Nursing and Physical Therapy, while the Faculty of Medicine offers the major in Medicine. *UDLA Global Health

SOCIAL WORK

Social work programs are related with the community outreach projects*. International students participate in activities with vulnerable groups in Ecuador, such as: children and adolescents, elderly citizens, indigenous communities, among others. International students experience Ecuadorian culture first-hand, as they are hosted by local families. *Community Outreach Projects

BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

This academic program is focused on bringing international students up close to the world of business and entrepreneurship. They will analyze topics such as: • • • • • • • •

Quality and productivity. Leadership and teamwork. Mergers and acquisitions. Commercial opportunities. Consumer behaviors. Neuromarketing. Banking risks and regulations. Sports Marketing.

The program is developed jointly with the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Science (FACEA), whose majors include Business Management, Finance, International Business, Marketing, Sports Management, and Economy. The program includes academic talks given by UDLA professors, as well as visits to important production and export companies of the country.

COMMUNICATION

The Communication Summer Academy combines conferences, workshops, and practical field work all directed by academic experts.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Participating in a research project, in the Environmental Engineering major, to measure the social and ecological impacts of land use change is the hallmark of this program. The project consists of the evaluation of water quality in high Andean rivers, using benthic macroinvertebrates as indicators. Additionally, the students may survey and get to know the members of the communities which neighbor the rivers to understand how land use change affects the ecological quality of ecosystems. This academic and cultural program includes theoretical classes, field trips, project development and presentation, and a cultural immersion as the student will live with Ecuadorian host families.

LAW

The Faculty of Law offers the possibility of participating in the research project titled “Gender and Justice”, which seeks to analyze the impact of domestic violence in some areas of Quito. This academic and cultural program includes theoretical classes, field trips, project development and presentation, and a cultural immersion as the student will live with Ecuadorian host families.

AGROINDUSTRIAL MANAGEMENT

This program allows to learn about agricultural methods. Includes academic guides in every trip: to complement the information given by the people in charge of the farms and plantations, as well as to explain all the details of each type of crop (vanilla, pitaya,pineapple, cacao, rubber, African palm, coffee, roses, among others) and in livestock farming (Production of milk, llamas, alpacas and guinea pigs). The program includes theoretical classes, field trips to different cities around the country and a cultural immersion as the student will live with Ecuadorian host families.

GASTRONOMY

There are 4 programs offered, whose objective is for foreign students to learn about native products, ancestral preparations, and food traditions from different areas around Ecuador. ll of these programs includes: theoretical classes, field trips, workshops with expert professors and a cultural immersion as the student will live with Ecuadorian host families.

Additionally, the School of Gastronomy offers a program focused on “Sustainable and healthy Gastronomy” which seeks to generate a model of gastronomy education focused on health and sustainable development based on four pillars:

• Nutrition and wellness. • Local production and responsible consumption. • Environmental preservation. • Quality education.

CULTURAL HERITAGE

Ecuador is a great biodiverse country which is home to various important World Heritage sites, ornate handicrafts, and important pre-Incan ethnic groups. This is due to the rich history and geographical diversity of the country. This course analyzes the key aspects of pre-Hispanic, Hispanic, and Mestizo identity and history in Ecuador. The ornate baroque art and architecture of Quito and Cuenca (United Nations World Heritage Sites) will be specifically examined. The ancestral wisdom of the main nations and indigenous peoples will be explored; students will also be able to appreciate renowned Ecuadorian handicrafts such as the Panama Hat (originally from Ecuador). The program includes theoretical classes, field trips; and cultural immersion as the student will live with Ecuadorian host families.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

This program will include the following courses: 1. Republican History: its objective is to offer the student a general vision of the socio-political history of Latin America, beginning with a chronological periodization, and considering the differences and inequalities of the Latin American countries.

2. Global political issues: its objective is to offer a general vision of the socio-political problems of the world. The program includes theoretical classes field trips and cultural immersion as the student will live with Ecuadorian host families.

MUSIC

The program is focused on international students learning more about different musical genres, participating in concerts, and attending cultural events, where they can experience the active participation of professors from the School of Music. SCHOOL OF SPANISH

The UDLA Spanish School works jointly with the Cervantes Institute to prepare and proctor exams in Spanish as a Foreign Language. The study programs are tailor-made and taught by native-speaking professors who are highly qualified and with over 20 years of experience in teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL).
