Ecuador is one of the smallest countries in South America; however, it is a rich country in cultural, geographical, and biological diversity. In Ecuador it is possible to explore the highlands and snowcapped volcanoes in the Andes Mountains; the dry forests, beaches, and mangroves of the Pacific coast; the tropical forests of the Amazon; and, the incredible biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands. It is easy and low-cost to get around the country using public transportation, which makes traveling and exploring perfect for a student budget. In addition, Ecuador is one of the best countries in Latin America to learn Spanish because Ecuadorian’s accent is neutral and easy to understand.

Quito, capital of Ecuador was founded at the foot of Pichincha Volcano, 13 km south of the Equator, at 2,850 meters above the sea level (9,200 feet). With an area of over one million acres, a population of 2,2 million inhabitants, and temperature that ranges from 49 to 70 degrees Farenheit, Quito is agreeable and charming, with deeply intriguing history and the gorgeous Andean backdrop. Snow-capped mountains, cloud forests, and “patchwork” valleys surround the city. Quito is also known by its priceless colonial treasures.
The city of Quito has been considered cradle of art and civilization, historically recognized as the Light of America, UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Its historical center, the largest in the continent, is filled with life, commercial activity, and the placid, laid-back atmosphere of colorful plazas surrounded by stunning architecture preserved since colonial times.
ABOUT UDLA The Universidad de Las Americas (UDLA) is the largest private university in Ecuador, founded in 1994 in Quito. UDLA has three campuses in the city and an experimental farm in Nono, one hour away from the downtown. COLLABORATIVE ONLINE INTERNATIONAL LEARNING (COIL) COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) is a pedagogical method that consists in the development of courses with a collaborative, international and virtual dimension, in which students can appreciate a global experience without leaving home.
• International virtual classroom: project that connects UDLA faculty with the faculty from foreign universities, to develop joint seminars or workshops on the topics related to the subjects they are teaching.
Within this program, UDLA offers: • Virtual Exchange: complementary experience to the academic semester, where students can take courses at a foreign university and experience what it is like to study in an international environment, without having to travel abroad.
• Intercultural Chat: program to practice English with an intercultural approach, through video-chat conversations with students from English-speaking countries, exchanging their culture.

Medical Insurance:
UDLA provides a free insurance policy for exchange students. The policy will be provided upon arrival in Ecuador and can be used in emergency and hospitalization with a coverage until USD 35.000.
We offer a 20-hour free Spanish Language course. This course takes place during the orientation week. If students need to improve their Spanish language skills, we suggest taking more classes at our Spanish School, before, during, or after their exchange semester.

RESEARCH INTERNSHIP UDLA offers an internship in research with the guidance of UDLA staff from the Department of Research and Community Service. There is a list of prerequisites required to get involved in the pre-selected topic in which students can contribute to research and, at the same time, learn from their tutors. Also, an online interview will be carried out with the candidates to decide on their final admission to the program.
During the internship, tutors will spend time with students, sharing analysis, surveys, pictures, and any other documents related to the research and its progress until the time when the intern is accepted to be part of the program. Finally, discussion forums are organized in order to exchange vievs on the theme of the investigation, accordind to the schedule provided at the beginning of the project.
