[ITA] Italiano d’origine, Freddy Bozzo lavora nel mondo del cinema da oltre 40 anni, ha creato a Bruxelles uno dei festival dei film di genere più importanti al mondo (fantasy, science-fiction, horror e thriller), lanciando in Europa opere come Il silenzio degli innocenti, L’esercito delle 12 scimmie e Videodrome. Ha fondato vari festival, tra i quali anche la Biennale di Cinema Italiano. [ENG] Of Italian origin, Freddy Bozzo has worked in cinema for more than 40 years, organising in Brussels one of the most important genre film Festivals in the world (fantasy, science-fiction, horror and thriller), and launching in Europe films such as The Silence of the Lambs, 12 Monkeys and Videodrome. He founded many other festivals, including the Biennale of Italian Cinema.
[ITA] Mattie Do è la prima, e finora unica, regista donna in Laos. Cresciuta a Los Angeles, è tornata presto nel suo Paese d’origine dove si è impegnata a costruire l’infrastruttura necessaria a permettere le prime co-produzioni internazionali. Il suo secondo film, Dearest Sister, ha debuttato proprio a Udine, ed è stato il primo film laotiano a essere sottoposto all’Academy. [ENG]Mattie Do is Laos’ first and, so far, only female filmmaker. She was raised in Los Angeles, but soon returned to her country of origin, where she worked to create the infrastructure necessary to introduce foreign co-productions. Her second feature, Dearest Sister, premièred at Udine’s own festival, and was the first Lao film to be submitted to the Academy.

[ITA] Giovanna Fulvi è programmatrice di cinema asiatico al Toronto International Film Festival dal 2002, oltre a far parte del comitato di selezione della Festa del Cinema di Roma e di quello del Festival di Macao. È stata inoltre giurata in vari festival asiatici: Jeonju, Tokyo, Bucheon e Macao. Ha collaborato come esperta culturale a L’ultimo Imperatore di Bertolucci. [ENG] Giovanna Fulvi has been programming Toronto International Film Festival since 2002, and she was a member of the selection committee for the Rome Film Festival and the Macau Film Festival. She has served on juries for many Asian film festivals, including Jeonju’s, Tokyo’s, Bucheon’s and Macau’s. She worked on Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor as cultural expert consultant.

When she wakes up, she has forgotten all about it, and the rest of the family decide to make her believe that while she was unconscious her son went to work in Argentina. L'Associazione cinese del Friuli Venezia Giulia "ACFVG" è stata fondata a Udine nel 1999 per dare assistenza e informazioni gratuite alla comunità cinese del territorio, favorendo l'integrazione con la comunità locale. [ITA] Il Far East Film Festival e Canicola Edizioni proseguono nel percorso di indagine e divulgazione del fumetto asiatico contemporaneo: con la mostra "Lungo i bordi" di Zuo Ma. Una preziosa occasione per conoscere da vicino il grande fumettista cinese, autore dello splendido Night Bus, e per ammirare quasi un centinaio di tavole originali (in bianco e nero e a colori). La mostra rimarrà aperta fino al termine del FEFF, il 5 maggio. Zou Jian (questo il vero nome di Zuo Ma) è nato nel 1983. Le sue opere sono fortemente ispirate alla vita quotidiana e sono state pubblicate su riviste indipendenti di fumetti, come Special Comix. Nel 2007, la casa editrice francese Xiao Pan ha pubblicato il suo Le repos de la baleine. Sempre per Xiao Pan, nel 2008, Zuo Ma ha partecipato al libro di autori vari Chroniques de Pékin. Nel 2018, ha firmato Entre Chien et Loup (edito in Francia da Cornelius) e il già citato Night Bus (edito in Italia da BAO Publishing). Lungo i bordi, ricordiamo, è anche il titolo del volume che verrà pubblicato da Canicola edizioni in occasione della mostra: un racconto breve in cui Zuo Ma torna ai temi che gli sono più cari.
[ENG] The Far East Film Festival and publisher Canicola Edizioni continue investigate and promote contemporary Asian comics with the exhibition: “Along the Edges” by Zuo Ma, creator of the splendid Night Bus. “Along the Edges” is a valuable opportunity to learn about this wonderful Chinese cartoonist, who will be be present for the opening, and to admire nearly a hundred original black and white and colour panels first hand. The exhibition will remain open until the end of the FEFF, on May the 5th. Zou Jian (Zuo Ma’s real name) was born in 1983. His work is deeply inspired by everyday life and has been published in independent comic magazines including Special Comix. In 2007, French publishing house Xiao Pan published his Le Repos de la Baleine. In 2008, Zuo Ma participated in the anthology Chroniques de Pékin, also published by Xiao Pan, and in 2018, he released Entre Chien et Loup (published in France by Cornelius) and Night Bus (published in Italy by BAO Publishing). Along the Edges is also the title of the book which will be published by Canicola editions on the occasion of the exhibition: a short story in which Zuo Ma returns to the themes which are most dear to him.

I CHOOSE EVILLAWBREAKERS UNDER THE MILITARY DICTATORSHIP [ITA] Per festeggiare il centenario del cinema coreano abbiamo preparato qualcosa di leggermente diverso. Invece di concentrarci su un particolare periodo o genere, presenteremo una selezione di otto film di spicco che, sebbene molto diversi in termini di contenuto, stile ed epoca in cui sono stati prodotti, hanno qualcosa in comune: sono stati tutti realizzati durante il periodo di dittatura militare che si è esteso dal colpo di stato di Park Chung Hee’s nel 1961 fino all’insediamento del presidente Kim Young Sam nel 1993, e sono tutti incentrati su persone che hanno infranto la legge. [ENG] 2019 marks the official celebration of 100 years of Korean cinema. To celebrate the centennial of Korean cinema we have prepared something slightly different. Rather than focus on a particular time period or genre, we are screening a selection of eight standout works that, although quite diverse in terms of content, style and the era in which they were produced, all share something in common. They were all made during the period of military rule that extended from Park Chung Hee’s coup in 1961 to the inauguration of president Kim Young Sam in 1993, and they are all centered around people who break the law.

[ENG] The brightly-coloured story, full of delicate humor and empathy, of an adultery (a crime which in the 1990s could be punished with prison) set in an imaginary working class suburb of Seoul. An incredibly dynamic and vital film which is only superficially non-political and which underlines the spiritual emptiness and violence of the Korean society of the times. @ Teatro Nuovo

Attraverso una fitta rete di flashback e prospettive contrastanti, il film sfugge al manicheismo del tempo e racconta con umanesimo antimilitarista le guerre ideologiche che hanno oppresso la penisola coreana fin dagli anni ‘40. [ENG] Former cop Song has spent the last thirty years trying to capture the man who slipped through his fingers during the Korean War communist partisan Jagko. Through a dense tapestry of flashbacks and contrasting perspectives, the film avoids the manichaeism of the time to examine, with anti-militarist humanism, the ideological wars that had tormented the Korean peninsula since the 1940s. @ Cinema Centrale

[ENG] A woman in her thirties, much of whose life has been characterized by betrayal by men and suffering, boards a train “to meet a man who will not show up”. A deeply expressionist film which powerfully evokes the world of the unconscious, by a director known for his eccentricity and for his unconventional view of the world.

[ENG] Obsessed with Saem, his first love, Du-sang moves to Seoul to look for her. [ITA] Nel 2016 il controverso film hongkonghese Ten Years – un’antologia che proponeva cinque visioni cupe e sorprendenti del futuro della città – è stato presentato al Far East Film Festival. In quell’occasione il team di Golden Scene, distributore internazionale del film, e la produttrice, Takamatsu Miyuki, si sono incontrati davanti a un caffè e hanno pensato che l’idea poteva essere estesa ad altre regioni dell’Asia. È così che è nato il progetto Ten Years. [ENG] In 2016, controversial HK anthology Ten Years – featuring five shorts offering bleak and startling visions of the future – screened at FEFF. It was in Udine that the team from Golden Scene, the film’s distributor, and producer Takamatsu Miyuki met over coffee and came up with the possibility of expanding the concept to other Asian regions. Thus, the International Ten Years Project was born.

L’abbinamento dei film ci consente di vedere i cambiamenti apportati per il pubblico di un altro paese, con i suoi diversi limiti e accenti. Speriamo che questo primo tentativo dia il via a future edizioni che analizzino altre opere provenienti dall’Asia. [ENG] Remakes and adaptation of other films have always been part of cinema’s DNA. Odd Couples is a first step towards examining the relationship between different film industries and cultures, whether as inspiration, influence, revision, homage or just plain plagiarism!
