FAR EAST FILM FESTIVAL 19 TUTTA LA FORZA DELL’ASIA! Chi ha spento la luce? Non l'ha spenta nessuno e non è saltato il salvavita. No, non si tratta neppure di un guasto momentaneo: l'elettricità ha proprio smesso di esistere. Così. Di colpo. E la famiglia Suzuki, adesso, deve imparare molto in fretta l'arte della sopravvivenza: affrontare un black out planetario non è esattamente un gioco da ragazzi! Si apre qui, in un mondo improvvisamente interrotto, l’irresistibile road movie giapponese Survival Family, e si apre qui anche l’attesissimo Far East Film Festival 19: non solo perché la bella commedia di Yaguchi Shinobu farà da starting gun, venerdì 21 aprile, ma anche per una ragione di simmetria: proprio come il black out di Survival Family, infatti, il FEFF rappresenta un’improvvisa interruzione.
La normalità quotidiana si blocca, così, di colpo, e il buio (in sala) del Teatro Nuovo “Giovanni da Udine” inghiotte per 9 giorni tutto e tutti. Mai come quest’anno, tra l’altro, il Festival ha messo a fuoco un’interruzione tanto perentoria: un programma vasto, vastissimo, un enorme black out che conta 83 titoli (selezionati su circa un migliaio di visioni) e include 4 anteprime mondiali, tra cui l’adrenalinico Shock Wave di Herman Yau che chiuderà ufficialmente il #FEFF19 (sabato 29 aprile), 12 anteprime internazionali, 10 International Festival Premiere, 25 anteprime europee, 1 European Festival Premiere e 22 anteprime italiane, testimoniando l’incredibile vitalità (produttiva e creativa) del cinema asiatico!
THE POWER OF ASIA! Who turned out the lights? Nobody did, and the fuses haven't blown. And no, it's not even a power cut. Electricity has just suddenly ceased to exist, so the Suzuki family must now very quickly learn the art of survival: and facing a global blackout is not exactly a walk in the park! It's with the world screeching to a halt of the irresistible Japanese road movie Survival Family that the highly anticipated Far East Film Festival 19 opens: not just because Yaguchi Shinobu's wonderful comedy is the festival's starting pistol on Friday the 21st of April, but also for a question of symmetry: just like the blackout in Survival Family, the FEFF is an interruption. Normal daily life suddenly stops, and for nine days, the darkness (of the cinema) in the Teatro
Nuovo “Giovanni da Udine” swallows up everything and everyone. More than ever before, this year the Festival has - among other things focused on creating a peremptory interruption: a packed programme and a massive blackout that counts 83 titles (selected out of more than a thousand films seen) and includes 4 world premiers, including Herman Yau's high-octane Shock Wave (which will officially closet the FEFF on Saturday the 29th of April), 12 international premieres, 10 International Festival Premieres, 25 European premieres, one European Festival Premiere and 22 Italian Premieres – testament to the incredible productive and creative vitality of Asian cinema!

A beautiful terrace, a dinner party, the right amount of alcohol, social masks being removed and a frisson of sex: the fuse is lit, and the spark is the rivalry between the buxom lady of the house and the beautiful Haruko who try to outdo one another while the men’s secrets gradually emerge. A caustic, tightlypaced chamber comedy whose witty dialogue uses irony to expose the vices of "good" Japanese society.

A peggiorare la situazione ci si mettono il padre di Cherie, una vecchia amica di Jimmy che si trasferisce da loro e degli sms sospetti sul telefono di lui. Riusciranno a rinsaldare le crepe? Amore, sesso ed altri guai… Pang is back in town!
Un ragazzo inconcludente dà appuntamento ad una ragazza tramite un sito di incontri ma questa è in realtà una casalinga annoiata. Superato l’imbarazzo i due trovano una sintonia caratteriale e sessuale. Ma entrambi hanno una vita "reale": lui una ragazza che lo mantiene, lei un marito. La rete di bugie cade facendo emergere altri inaspettati segreti. Con uno stile evocativo, Miura ribadisce che non esiste un'unica verità e che nessuno è solo buono o cattivo
Living together is no bed of roses for Jimmy and Cherie. Cherie struggles to put up with Jimmy’s laziness and his love of cheap trinkets, as she confides in her girlfriends. Adding to the complications are Cherie’s father, an old female friend of Jimmy who moves in with them and those suspicious text messages on his phone. Will they manage to repair the cracks in their relationship? Love, sex... and other problems. Pang is back in town!
Through a dating site, a young slacker hooks up with a girl who actually turns out to be a bored housewife. After the initial embarrassment, the two realise that there is a powerful attraction between them, both sexually and otherwise, but both have a "real" life: he has a girlfriend who funds him and she has a husband, and eventually the web of lies collapses and other unexpected secrets emerge. The training is no picnic, especially when he falls for a vampire, but the "blood moon" is approaching, bringing with it great danger. The quintessence of Park Chan-wook’s talent and given its prize at Cannes by the king of pulp, Quentin Tarantino, Oldboy – the second chapter in the Vengeance Trilogy - is probably the film principally responsible for bringing the new Korean cinema to the world’s attention. Thirteen years after its release, Old Days (a documentary which started life as an extra for inclusion on the special edition Blu-ray and became a film in its own right given the amount of available material) examines how it was made.
Siam Square, a meeting place for Bangkok teenagers, becomes home to horror as a group of students investigate their school after discovering the terrifying apparition that haunts the institute corridors. A tense horror film with a complex plot, tight editing and an eerie atmosphere which gradually reveals a potent, sincere portrait of adolescence and its dark side.

Dialoghi brillanti, una capacità di invenzione continua e uno stile radicale fanno di questo film uno degli esempi più felici e originali del cinema irriducibilmente cantonese di Pang Ho-Cheung. In Hong Kong the ban on smoking in enclosed places has forced people to gather outdoors near garbage cans to smoke, and it is in precisely on of these groups that lightning strikes and an unlikely love story between an advertising executive and a sales girl. Witty dialogue, a capacity for continuous invention and a radical style make this film one of the most succesful and original examples of Pang Ho-Cheung irreducibly Cantonese cinema.

Joey è un universitario dallo spirito libero che vorrebbe scrivere una canzone per un film. Anna ha dovuto sposarsi giovane e ora si sente prigioniera. Man mano che i due diventano più intimi, lei assaggia la libertà, mentre lui trova un senso alla sua vita. Ma la realtà si insinua tra loro e dovranno scegliere: risvegliarsi o rimanere nel “sogno rubato”? Amara love story che smaschera le contraddizione della famiglia nella società filippina.
Rosario is an elementary school teacher who during the Second World War is raped by Captain Masugi, a Japanese officer born in the Philippines. After discovering she is pregnant, she refuses Masugi only to then develop a strange love for him, even agreeing to marry him. The townspeople believe that Rosario is a collaborator and when American troops return to the Philippines, Rosario and Masugi must flee with the retreating Japanese army.
Joey is a free-spirited university student who wants to write a song for a movie. Anna was forced to marry young and now she feels like a prisoner. As the two become more intimate, she gets a taste of freedom and he finds meaning in his life. But reality intervenes, and they are forced to choose: to awaken or to remain in a “stolen dream”? A bitter love story that exposes the contradictions of family life in Philippine society.

Osannato dalla critica d’arte e letteraria, Yoshiharu Tsuge (1937) è tra i maggiori autori di fumetto di tutti i tempi. A trent’anni dal suo ritiro dalle scene e nell’ottantesimo anno dalla sua nascita, Canicola edizioni in collaborazione con il Far East Film Festival, presenta in Italia L’uomo senza talento (1986), opera cruciale per il manga moderno che mescola realismo a squarci lirici. Il romanzo è un watakushi manga, un “fumetto dell’io” denso di introspezione, e si può considerare un capolavoro assoluto del genere, e il canto del cigno della straordinaria carriera di Tsuge che ritiratosi dalle scene nel 1987 è diventato figura di culto in Giappone e nel resto del mondo. La mostra allestita al Visionario si pone come omaggio al grande maestro giapponese attraverso un’esposizione divisa in isole tematiche del libro. Le sezioni saranno aperte da grandi manifesti disegnati che faranno da “copertina” e introduzione alle sezioni, si tratta del tributo di autori del nostro fumetto contemporaneo come Andrea Bruno, Vincenzo Filosa, Fabio Ramiro Rossin, Michelangelo Setola e dell’argentino Berliac, tra i principali “gekiga gaijin” della scena internazionale. La mostra e il libro edito per l’occasione sono il primo progetto culturale dedicato a Tsuge in Italia.
Acclaimed by art and literary critics, Yoshiharu Tsuge (1937) is among the most important comic authors of all time. Thirty years after his retirement, and in his eightieth year, Canicola Edizioni in collaboration with the Far East Film Festival, presents the Italian version of The Man Without Talent (1986), a crucial work for modern Manga which mixes realism with the surreal and the grotesque. The novel is a Watakushi manga, an “ego comic” dense with introspection, and is considered a masterpiece of the genre and the swan song of the extraordinary Tsuge, who retired in 1987, becoming a cult figure in Japan and the rest of the world. The exhibition at the Visionary, divided into the thematic islands of the book, aims to pay tribute to the great Japanese master. At the entrance to each section there will be large posters which will act as “cover” and introduction – they are the tributes of contemporary Italian comic authors like Andrea Bruno, Vincenzo Filosa, Fabio Ramiro Rossin, Michelangelo Setola and Argentine comic artist Berliac, some of the best-nown gekiga gaijin on the international scene. The exhibition and the book published for the occasion are the first cultural initiative dedicated to Tsuge in Italy

Tsuboi e Kinoshita iniziano a vagare per la città finché non incontrano una giovane donna, Atsuko. I tre, divenuti amici, partono insieme per un viaggio. Ma un giorno la donna scompare… Yamashita ci regala con il suo stile inconfondibile un’interpretazione personale e contemporanea dell’opera di Tsuge.
Tsuboi and Kinoshita, two amateur filmmakers, have just arrived in a desolate town, lured by the flatteries of an actor that is now nowhere to be found. The two of them begin to wander the streets until they meet a young woman, Atsuko. Quickly turning into friends, they set out on a journey. Until one day, the woman suddenly disappears…Yamashita offers us, with his unmistakable style, a personal and contemporary take on Tsuge’s work.

Dedicata all’idea di paradosso e di contraddizione nella cultura estremoorientale, Paradoxa è una mostra d’arte contemporanea che ogni anno esplora uno dei contesti nazionali di quell’area. L’edizione 2017 affronta il tema dell’oscurità e del suo valore dialettico per la cultura e l’arte contemporanea cinese. Oscurità e buio, come temi da sempre associati alla filosofia e alla religione cinese, sono divenuti oggi un modo per rivelare alcuni aspetti contraddittori della modernità e della visione della personalità in Cina. Da superpotenza dell’economia globale, essa mantiene infatti una relazione controversa con il suo passato e con l’individualità della persona, che in questa mostra viene messa in luce, attraverso l’oscurità, come una questione d’importanza filosofica, psicologica, estetica: una sorta di controparte del radioso processo di sviluppo economico e tecnologico cinese, spesso rappresentato come dirompente e inarrestabile. In mostra sono esposte le opere di tre artisti: i video allegorici di Cheng Ran; le fotografie incantate e misteriose di Chen Wei; le immagini ambigue e oscure di Xie Nanxing.
Focused on the notion of paradox and contradiction in Far East Asian culture, Paradoxa is a Contemporary Art exhibition, held at the Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea of Casa Cavazzini, which every year explores a different national context. The edition of 2017 is dedicated to Chinese Contemporary Art and the topic of obscurity according to the dialectic value it embodied for Chinese culture. Being one of the classic theme associated with Chinese philosophical and religious tradition, the darkness and obscurity will be here intended as a revelation of some contradictory aspects of Chinese modernity and personality. As a superpower of the global economy, China has now a controversial relation to its past and to individuality, which can be revelated by the theme of darkness as a philosophical, psychological, aesthetic counterpart of its overwhelming process of economic and technological progress which is often represented as much disruptive than endless. The exhibition includes the works of three artists: the suspense and allegory of Cheng Ran’s videos; the enchanted photographs of Chen Wei; the ambivalent and obscure images of Xie Nanxing’s Painting.

Alla sua 3a edizione torna il progetto dedicato ai giovani giornalisti asiatici ed europei. Una scuola di giornalismo che affiancherà la didattica all’esperienza. Il programma includerà seminari e workshop e i ragazzi saranno gli ambasciatori del Festival e del FVG nel mondo.

GOURMET SANDWICH CONTEST
Four chefs compete to create the most mouthwatering Asian-Friulian fusion sandwich, with the public choosing the winner. The event will be held in collaboration with FVG Wine Movimento Turismo, which will have its own wine bar inside the theatre.
COFFEE & TALKS
Each day from around 10:00 on the 22nd to the 25th of April and from around 14:30 on the 26th to the 28th of April, the visiting stars will meet the public in the theatre (first floor). Languages: Italian and English.

There will be over 100 events from martial arts, workshops and wellness to videogames and erotica. Entry to events marked on the calendar with a dot requires the purchase of tokens. Each token costs € 5 and a ‘loyalty pack’ of 5 tokens for € 20 is available. Tokens may only be bought at the Infopoint in V. Cavour and the festival bookshop in the Teatro Nuovo. The initiative dedicated to young Asian and European journalists returns for its third edition. A real school of journalism which brings together study and first-hand experience. The programme will include seminars and workshops and the students of the Campus will be ambassadors around the world for the Festival and for Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The info-point is sited in Via Cavour, in the heart of the city. It provides information on the festival’s programme and events and is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00. During the Festival, another info-point will be open in the Teatro Nuovo. Opening hours 8:30> 00:00.
As audience members enter the cinema, they are given a card upon which to give each film a mark from 1 to 5 and which is left in a special urn at the end of the projection.
