Due parole molto semplici che contengono una grande complessità: l’intera line-up del FEFF23, cioè 64 titoli nati durante un periodo di buio e ora pronti ad affrontare le luci dell’alba. Una potente ondata artistica e geografica che trova specchio non solo nel moving forward del claim ufficiale, ma proprio nella struttura delSPONSORS Festival di ques’anno. [ENG] Moving forward: two simple words that contain immense complexity: the entire FEFF23 line-up, 64 titles created during a period of darkness and now ready to walk into the light of dawn. An immense explosion of creativity and geography which is mirrored not only in the festival’s official slogan but also in the very structure of the Festival itself. A new structure, where the digital experience of 2020 joins the highly anticipated return of in-person events. This is a FEFF that multiplies instead of shrinking, starting with the number of locations. No longer a single screen, but a system of 5 screens: 3 at the FESTIVAL PARTNERS Visionario, 2 at the Cinema Centrale and an open-air cinema for 400 spectators on the Visionario’s lawn. FEFF 23 guarantees numerous daily screenings from morning to evening and, needless to stress, will also guarantee maximum safety. Maximum safety also for the highly anticipated Far East events: over fifty in-person appointments that will bring a vital taste of the FEFF to the centre of the city!

WHITE MULBERRY: THE PRIZE FOR THE BEST FIRST FILM IN COMPETITION
Il Gelso Bianco, premio istituito nel 2018 in occasione del ventennale, sarà assegnato alla miglior opera prima della selezione ufficiale del FEFF23. A decretare il vincitore è stata chiamata una giuria di professionisti:
A new award, created especially for the occasion of the FEFF’s twentieth birthday (2018): the White Mulberry (Gelso Bianco), which will be awarded to the best first film in the official selection for FEFF23.
Nato a Barcellona, dove risiede, Mike Hostench ha trascorso la prima infanzia nella Carolina del Sud (Stati Uniti) e negli anni Novanta ha vissuto e lavorato a Londra. Il suo percorso professionale è sempre stato legato all’industria cinematografica: ha iniziato con la vendita al dettaglio e la distribuzione, lavorando per aziende come la Virgin e poi per la propria Gorgon Video. Dal 2002 al 2019 all’impegno come vicedirettore del Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia Hostench ha aggiunto la stesura di sceneggiature, la produzione e la distribuzione cinematografica.
Born and based in Barcelona, spent his early childhood in South Carolina (US), and has lived and worked in London, UK, during the 1990’s. His career has always been connected to the film industry. First in retail and distribution, working for companies such as Virgin, and his own: Gorgon Video. From 2002 to 2019 Hostench combined his position as Deputy Director of the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia with scriptwriting, and film production and distribution.
Igort (pseudonimo di Igor Tuveri) lavora dalla fine degli anni ‘70 come autore di fumetti, illustratore, saggista e musicista. Alcune tra le sue prime storie appaiono sulla rivista Il pinguino, da lui fondata. Nel corso degli anni ‘80 i suoi fumetti appaiono in molte riviste nazionali e internazionali tra cui Linus, Alter, Vanity, The Face. Scrive articoli, saggi, riflessioni per Il Manifesto, Reporter, Il Corriere della Sera, la Repubblica. Nel 2000 fonda e dirige la casa editrice Coconino Press. Nel 2019 porta al cinema il suo romanzo a fumetti 5 è il numero perfetto, firmando regia, soggetto e sceneggiatura. Il film con Toni Servillo riceve 9 candidature ai David di Donatello.
Igort (Igor Tuveri) has been working since the 70s as a comic book author, illustrator and musician. Some of his first stories appeared in the magazine Il Pinguino, which he founded. During the 80s, his cartoons appeared in many international magazines, including Linus, Alter, Vanity and The Face. He has written articles for Il Manifesto, Reporter, Il Corriere della Sera, la Repubblica. In 2000, he founded and also runs the publishing house Coconino Press. In 2019, he brought his graphic novel 5 is the Perfect Number to the cinema, both directing and writing the screenplay. The film, starring Toni Servillo, received 9 David di Donatello nominations.

Ángel Sala (Barcelona, 1964). Writer, screenwriter and film critic, especially well-known as the director of the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia since 2001. He is variously the author, co-author and editor of some thirty books, many of which analyse different aspects of the fantasy and horror genres, such as Cine fantástico y de terror alemán. 1913-1927 (2005), Universo Lynch (2006), El demonio en el cine (2007), El cine de ciencia ficción. [ITA] A-Cheng riscatta debiti per un gangster e per farlo non lesina sulla violenza ma sa anche essere clemente con chi lo merita. Ha un colpo di fulmine per Hao-ting, figlia di uno dei debitori, ma il ragazzo conosce solo il mondo della malavita e quindi si lancia in un rozzo e primitivo corteggiamento con la riduzione dei debiti della ragazza in cambio di pietosi appuntamenti. Quando Hao-ting intravede del bene in lui, le nubi del melodramma si addensano e A-Cheng dovrà fare i conti con la natura del suo lavoro. Go Yeong-nam gioca con la sintassi del brivido, della tensione e dell’erotismo, impaginando una storia che non concede tregua fino ai titoli di coda... Chi è veramente la giovane orfana che la famiglia Kang assume come cameriera? HONG KONG CINEMA IS ALIVE AND KICKING
[ITA] Le voci che preconizzavano la fine del cinema hongkonghese erano davvero esagerate. A uno sguardo superficiale, sembra proprio che i film che incarnano la cultura e il sapore unici di Hong Kong siano in gran parte estinti. Ma il cinema di Hong Kong esiste ancora, ed esisterà sempre, finché continueranno a darsi da fare quei registi interessati a una città così ricca e variegata, alla sua storia e alla sua cultura. Anche oggi continuano a sfornare film hongkonghesi unici, seppure non così sontuosi o sfarzosi come negli anni passati. La scelta vincente per la sopravvivenza del cinema di Hong Kong è stata quella di promuovere nuovi talenti che avevano il desiderio di raccontare le proprie storie. È passato il tempo delle pellicole rivolte a un pubblico di massa, come i film di arti marziali raffazzonati e le commedie surreali prefabbricate, sostituiti ora da prodotti più ponderati, con idee personali più forti. Il botteghino locale è l’ombra di se stesso e gli incassi dei film hongkonghesi in lingua cinese si sono decisamente contratti, mentre le opere tanto di Hong Kong quanto della Cina continentale sono state eclissate dalle epopee dei supereroi Marvel. Il cinema hongkonghese si è quindi evoluto nel senso della controprogrammazione, con film più piccoli, budget più limitati e nuovi registi che fungono da alternativa ai prodotti di Hollywood. La sezione Hong Kong New Talents del FEFF23 ha lo scopo proprio di dimostrare quanto detto sopra.
[ENG] Reports of Hong Kong cinema’s death have been greatly exaggerated. At a superficial glance, films that channel the unique culture and flavour of Hong Kong now seem largely extinct. But Hong Kong cinema still exists. It will always exist, as long as filmmakers interested in the rich and diverse city, its history, and its culture still toil. Even now, they’re still making unique Hong Kong movies, if not as grandly or gaudily as in years past. The key to Hong Kong cinema’s survival has been fostering new talents with the desire to tell their own stories. Gone are mass audience films like the slapdash martial arts films and manufactured nonsense comedies, replaced by more thoughtful fare with stronger personal ideas. Local box office is a shadow of its former self, and Hong Kong’s Chinese-language cinema grosses are now much smaller, with both Hong Kong and mainland efforts being eclipsed by Marvel superhero epics. Local Hong Kong cinema has thus evolved into counterprogramming – smaller, lowerbudgeted films from newer filmmakers that act as an alternative to Hollywood films. The Hong Kong New Talents section of the 23rd edition of Far East Film aims to showcase all of that.

[ITA] Nella sua vocazione di promuovere e celebrare il cinema di tutta l’Asia, il FEFF ha deciso di rendere omaggio al più grande attore filippino di tutti i tempi, Eddie Garcia! Con 659 film all’attivo come attore e 37 come regista, Garcia è stato probabilmente l’attore più prolifico di tutta l’Asia. Nato nel 1929 a Sorsogon, nella provincia di Bicol, Eddie era una leggenda vivente nelle Filippine. Tra il 1949 e il 2019 (settant’anni di carriera!) ha interpretato pellicole di tutti i tipi, dai celebri classici degli anni Cinquanta ai film “d’autore” dell’ultimo decennio e ha diretto una trentina di film dai primi anni Sessanta agli anni Novanta. Si è cimentato in tutti i generi del cinema popolare filippino: film d’azione, bellici, melodrammi, commedie e chi più ne ha più ne metta, a fianco degli attori e dei registi più celebri di diverse generazioni. La sua vita e la sua lunghissima carriera costituiscono una vera e propria epopea cinematografica che ha attraversato tutti i diversi momenti e aspetti del cinema filippino e della società filippina in cambiamento. Ti ameremo per sempre, Eddie!
[ENG] As part of its mission to promote and celebrate cinema from all over Asia, the FEFF has decided to pay tribute to the greatest Filipino actor of all time Eddie Garcia! With 659 films to his credit as an actor and thirty-seven as a director, Garcia was probably the most prolific star in all Asia. Born in 1929 in Sorsogon, Bicol province, Eddie was a living legend in the Philippines. Between 1949 and 2019 (a seventyyear career!), he starred in all kinds of films, from the famous classics of the 1950s to the “art-house” films of the last decade, and between the early 1960s and the 1990s he directed some thirty films himself, trying his hand at all genres of popular Filipino cinema - action films, war films, melodramas, comedies, you name it alongside the most famous actors and directors of the various generations. His life and incredibly long career constitute a true cinematic epic that spanned every period of Filipino cinema and of a changing Filipino society. We’ll love you forever, Eddie!

[ITA] Il regista Yoon Jong-bin ha realizzato, ad oggi, cinque lungometraggi a partire dal suo esordio, avvenuto nel 2005 con il premiato The Unforgiven. In questo lasso di tempo è assurto alla posizione di uno dei cineasti più influenti dell’attuale industria cinematografica coreana. Per la maggior parte degli autori che hanno lo stesso tipo di esperienza, il termine “mondo cinematografico” potrebbe sembrare un po’ troppo altisonante. Dopotutto, quanta parte di un mondo può essere inglobata in soli cinque film? Nel caso di Yoon, però, la descrizione è calzante. C’è un elemento di ampio respiro nelle sue storie: anche se ambientato in un particolare momento o luogo, o incentrato su un gruppo ben definito di personaggi, ciò che lui racconta ci apre gli occhi su qualcosa di molto più vasto. Considerati nel loro insieme, i film di Yoon offrono una prospettiva caleidoscopica su vari aspetti della società coreana, dal punto di vista contemporaneo e storico. La capacità del regista di intrattenere lo spettatore e nel contempo di scavare a fondo per svelare le dinamiche insite in diverse questioni sociali e politiche, aggiunge ulteriore profondità ai suoi film. [ENG] Director Yoon Jong-bin has shot five feature films to date since making his debut in 2005 with the award-winning The Unforgiven. In that time he has risen to become one of the most influential directors working in the Korean film industry today. For most directors with a similar level of experience, the term “cinematic world” might feel a bit grandiose. After all, how much of a world can one depict in just five films? But in Yoon’s case, the description fits. There is something expansive about his works; they may be set within a particular time and place, focusing on a particular group of characters, but the stories he tells opens our eyes to something much wider. Yoon’s films provide a multifaceted look at various aspects of contemporary and historical Korean society. His ability to entertain the audience at the same time as he digs deep to reveal the inner dynamics of various social and political issues gives his films an added depth. As his career has progressed, he has also become active as a producer, working behind the scenes to realize the box office hits A Violent Prosecutor (2016), Money (2019) and The Closet (2020). In that sense, he is a director who can’t be ignored by anyone who takes a serious interest in contemporary Korean cinema.

L’atmosfera è tesa, Emanuele cerca solo la concentrazione mentre il maestro Agnuzzi sta preparando il bendaggio, un rituale pieno di misticismo e di movimenti antichi mai cambiati nel tempo. Da qui parte una nostra storia, raccontata dalle voci di coloro che hanno vissuto in prima persona le tappe e i momenti salienti che hanno portato Blandamura a contendersi il titolo mondiale. La storia del “SIOUX”, il bullo di periferia poi diventato un campione, un racconto dal finale aperto. [ENG] We are in the locker room just before the fight that will see boxer Emanuele Blandamura take on Ryota Murata for the title of AMB World Middleweight Champion. The atmosphere is tense, and Emanuele attempts to focus while his trainer Agnuzzi bandages his hands, a timeless, mystical ritual which has remained unaltered over the years. This is the starting point for our story, told in the voices of those who experienced first-hand the journey that led Blandamura to the world title bout. The story of “SIOUX”, the bully from the outskirts of town who became a champion - a tale with an open ending. 57

INFORMAZIONI / INFO Dopo un anno di attività davanti ad un monitor accontentandoci dei panorami degli screensaver, è venuto finalmente il momento che gli eventi del FEFF riconquistino la città. La nuova collocazione del festival, in questa inedita e temporanea veste estiva, ha permesso di dare alle iniziative un leitmotiv preciso: stare all’aria aperta! Le attività sono numerose e suddivise nelle seguenti categorie: SHOWS&TALKS, WORKSHOPS, FEFF KIDS, FAR EAST FOOD, WELLNESS, HAPPY HOURS, FAR EAST MARKET
After a year sitting in front of a monitor trying to make do with the landscapes on our screensavers, the time has finally come for the FEFF to take over the city once again. The festival’s unprecedented and temporary summer dates this year mean we’ve been able to give the events a precise theme: being in the open air! There are plenty of events on offer, divided into the following categories: SHOWS&TALKS, WORKSHOPS, FEFF KIDS, FAR EAST FOOD, WELLNESS, HAPPY HOURS, FAR EAST MARKET

[ITA] L’anno giapponese è punteggiato di festività e in questa edizione del FEFF onoreremo il Tanabata matsuri. Durante questa festa tutti i desideri scritti sui tanzaku, i foglietti di carta legati a un ramo di bambù, si avverano. Dal 23 giugno, giorno del rituale friulano del “mazzetto di San Giovanni”, potrete appendere i vostri tanzaku sulle piante di bambù della collinetta di Largo dei Pecile. Ricordate: ogni desiderio può diventare realtà! Trovate i tanzaku presso: Libreria Friuli, Profumeria Elisir, Robe di Casa. [ENG] Japanese year is punctuated with festivals and in this edition of the FEFF we will celebrate Tanabata matsuri. [ITA] Il Circo all’inCirca, un collettivo di giovani artisti punto di riferimento sul territorio friulano per la valorizzazione del circo contemporaneo, ci porterà alla scoperta della disciplina del palo cinese. Silvia di Landro si esibirà in questa performance, che punta l’attenzione sul movimento lungo una pertica di 5 metri. L’acrobata instaurerà un dialogo tra i suoi movimenti e la musica creata sfruttando i suoni del palo, abitando lo spazio con continuità e leggerezza. [ENG] Chinese Pole Circo all’InCirca, a collective of young artists who are a reference point in the Friuli area for the promotion of the modern circus, take us on a journey of discovery of the Chinese pole. Silvia di Landro will demonstrate the discipline, which focuses attention upon movement along a 5-meter pole. The acrobat will establish a dialogue between her movements and the music created from the sounds of the pole, inhabiting the space with fluidity and lightness. 24/06 – H 19.30 Visionario

[ITA] Kokeshible è un’installazione onirica. Una performer vestita da piccola kokeshi, la tradizionale bambola giapponese, è trasposta in un magico mondo sferico. Eleganti micro movimenti la condurranno verso un passaggio inevitabile: l’apertura. Una danza di buon auspicio, dove tutto è immerso in uno spazio-tempo unico, in cui il fiato rimane sospeso. La performer, attraverso piccoli gesti antichi, simbolici, propiziatori, rimarrà dentro la sua sfera per ricordarci il tempo sospeso che abbiamo vissuto. [ENG] Kokeshible is a dreamlike installation where a kokeshi - the traditional Japanese doll - is transposed into its magical spherical world. Elegant micromovements lead towards the inevitable step of the opening. A good luck dance in which everything is immersed in a unique space-time where even breathing seems to stop. Through small, ancient, symbolic gestures, the performer will stay in her sphere to remind us of the suspended time we have lived, celebrating the ephemeral sacredness of beauty. 8

Ancient Chinese Dramatic Art FACE MASK CHANGING By Jin Gang
[ITA] La pratica delle facce cangianti, in cinese bian lian, è uno spettacolo unico dell’Opera del Sichuan nato più di 300 anni fa. Le sue tecniche sono ancora segrete e tramandate di generazione in generazione tra le famiglie di teatranti. Le maschere colorate vengono cambiate con un semplice movimento di mano o scuotendo la testa a velocità eccezionale, tra lo stupore del pubblico. Jin Gang, esponente di spicco nel mondo della cultura cinese, ci incanterà con la sua performance colorata ed elegante. [ENG] The practice of changing faces - bian lian in Chinese - is a unique part of the Sichuan Opera that originated more than 300 years ago. Its techniques are still a secret and have been handed down among families of theatrical performers from generation to generation. The masks are switched at stunning speed with just a movement of the hand or a shake of the head, to the amazement of the audience. Korean Pop Dance K-POP In collaborazione con il Comicon e K-ble Jungle
[ITA] Il K-pop è, senza dubbio, uno dei generi più in voga nella scena musicale attuale: ha superato i confini della Corea del Sud spopolando in tutto l’Occidente. Il suo segreto? Un favoloso insieme di fattori: musica orecchiabile (chi di noi non canticchia ancora Gangnam style, dopo quasi dieci anni?), coreografie che fondono hip hop e arti marziali, estetica impeccabile. I tre semifinalisti del contest nazionale di K-pop Top Players Challenge del Comicon si esibiranno per la opening del FEFF, partner del concorso. [ENG] K-pop is undoubtedly one of the most popular genres in the recent pop music scene: it has crossed the borders of South Korea and spread throughout the West. Its secret? An incredible combination of catchy tunes (who isn’t still humming Gangnam style almost ten years on?), choreography that fuses hip hop and martial arts, and impeccable aesthetics. The three semi-finalists of the national K-pop contest - which took place online - will perform for the opening of FEFF, a partner in the competition. 24/06 – H 19.30 Visionario

[ITA] C’è un Lui, detto Viso, e c’è una Lei, Rachel, la più piccola e riccia del duo. Un duo caratterizzato da una sottile comicità corporea che utilizza il linguaggio circense per giocare e cercare di scoprire punti deboli e qualità dell’altro/a. Lui è Davide Visintini, Lei è Giulia Racca: singolarmente sono un giocoliere e un’acrobata aerea, insieme sono una coppia di “mano a mano”. [ENG] There is a He, commonly called Viso, and there is a She, Rachel, the smallest and curliest of the pair. Using subtle physical comedy, the two find themselves having (or wanting) to engage with one another and experiencing the space-time rhythms of their slowed-down fragility. A corporeal dialogue that uses circus language as each playfully attempts to discover the other’s weaknesses and qualities. The duo is made up of Davide Visintini and Giulia Racca, a couple who individually are a juggler and aerial acrobat. 9

[ITA] I kokedama, termine giapponese traducibile con “palla (dama) di muschio (koke)”, sono piante sospese, con le radici avvolte in una sfera di terra e argilla rivestita di muschio e legata con lo spago: una composizione che colpisce per equilibrio e semplicità. Nei kokedama il vaso è pura assenza e la pianta si tramuta in un’opera d’arte scultorea e aerea. Questo workshop introduttivo vi permetterà di realizzare il vostro kokedama e dare un tocco orientale alla vostra casa. Max 20 partecipanti. [ENG] Kokedama, a Japanese term that translates as “ball (dama) of moss (koke)”, are suspended plants, their roots wrapped in a sphere of earth and clay covered in moss and tied up with string: a striking combination of balance and simplicity. Una raccolta eterogenea, in cui suoni elettronici si uniscono a chitarre acustiche e piano, con intermezzi sperimentali che toccano punte pop-psichedeliche. Abiteranno questo spazio e questa atmosfera due creature in uno zentai pink – dall’abbreviazione di “zenschen taitsu” cioè “calza per tutto il corpo” - senza identità, genere, sesso né lingua. [ENG] Born on the slopes of Mount Sappho in the bay of Sk/\L/∑R∑Ssos, Tzaziky & Crack are inspired by the ideal soundtrack for a Martian dancefloor. Their sets are an ongoing search for a precarious balance between post-present and future-past for bodies in motion. Il ristorante preparerà per l’occasione uno speciale menù FEFF edition che potrete ritirare – previa prenotazione – al Giardino Loris Fortuna. L’atmosfera verrà riscaldata dalle sonorità orientali del Vinyl-set di Alessio Magenta. Il DJ veneto, dopo le uscite su Netlabel e Bandcamp con il duo ContaineR, ha licenziato l’EP Upsidowngles firmandosi Magénta. Fa parte del trio BassMatterz, che viaggia nel passato e nel futuro della dubstep, e cura interamente il mood sonoro di Opus, concept di design e artigianato. * bento + acqua € 15. The atmosphere will be provided by the Asian sounds of Alessio Magenta’s all-vinyl DJ set. After releases on Netlabel and Bandcamp with the duo ContaineR, the Venetian DJ has released the Upsidowngles EP under the name Magénta. He is part of the BassMatterz trio, who journey through the past and the future of dubstep, and creates the sonic atmospheres of design and craftsmanship concept Opus. * bento + water € 15.
