Inscription Stones of Bangalore, A Physical Verification Project by Udaya Kumar P L

Introduction This is documentation of a self-funded project motivated by the desire to learn more about my home cityBangalore, and to publicize the learnings A very key learning so far has been that we have in our city - in the urban jungle that Bangalore has turned into, a plethora of historical evidences in the form of centuries old stone inscriptions ! Unfortunately most of these have been misunderstood or ignored and lie in pitiable, unsafe surroundings . While a fair number of these stone inscriptions are still intact and readable, many also have been destroyed, most sadly in the last decade or so. If the present state of ignorance about them continues, then the pace at which they will be destroyed is bound to increase - given the maddening pace at which the city is growing and the increased pressures to encroach on the space they occupy. However with better awareness about what they really are, the chances of their being valued & therefore secured are much higher. All photos in this presentation are mine and can be freely reproduced. I hope but do not insist that I will be credited as the photographer and the person who (re)recognized these stones for what they really are ! This is a living document which will be continually updated to reflect the state of more stone inscriptions in the city as I learn about them. As of 30-Sep-2017 I have verified some 92 of the 160 odd stone inscriptions known to have been in Bangalore per historians. In due course I will add to this presentation the exact locations of these stones so that anyone interested may also go see them.

If you like this project and have something to say about it , please write to Udayakumar.pl@gmail.com “Inscription Stones of Bangalore by Udayakumar.pl@gmail.com

Stone Inscriptions – A Primer Stone Inscriptions (Shila Shasanas) are excellent sources of information about the local history of a place . They provide information about •

Martyrdom in war/defending cattle/defending women/hunting an elephant/tiger/bear,….

self killing for varied reasons….by a soldier at his kings funeral/for the fulfilment of

a vow/fast unto death for religious reasons/widowing/… •

the names of the local chieftain & empire of the time

the genealogy of the King

names of places and regions in use at the time

astronomical events such as solar eclipses, solistices..

the evolution of language over the centuries

units of length/area/currency..in use at the time

religious practices – grants to temples, shraddas, popular festivals

the construction of villages & lakes “Inscription Stones of Bangalore” by Udayakumar.pl@gmail.com

Inscription Stones (Shila Shashanas ) & Snake (Naga) Stones The two are completely different, Inscription Stones are often poorly dressed, visually unappealing with inscriptions carved on them. They usually do not carry any carvings of Snakes or other Deities. But Inscription stones do often have a full circle and a crescent carved at the top. These are symbolic indications that the contents of the inscription are valid for as long as the Sun & Moon are around (for all time to come). An inscription stone may sometimes include a deity (often a linga or a padma) depiction between the Sun and the Moon carvings. Naga stones sport the carving of a snake(s) and do not have any inscriptions on them. Naga stones are very common and are found in most streets! While some of these Naga stones may be hundreds of years old, there is not much of history to be gleaned from them. They are essentially religious in nature Often people mistake Inscription Stones for Naga stones and worship them too !

The Structure Of An Inscription Stone Moon

Sun Linga The first word is a greeting such as Swasti/Om.. Wishing all people well

The middle part is the key message of the inscription.

Date of the inscription in the Indian calendar system The Kings name with honorifics The last part is a blessing for those who honor and protect the inscription and a curse on those who protects or violates the core message or descrate the inscription

The Stone Inscriptions Of Bangalore Per historical records*, the Bangalore region in the late 1800s had about 200 stone inscriptions in its various villages & towns. These inscriptions span the period 517AD-1858AD and are an important record of the villages of that time and events there. The language and scripts of these inscriptions are Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Persian languages. Except in the case of a few well known inscriptions, the status of most of these are unknown today. This project (a self funded, citizen initiative) is an attempt to track these stones in the urban jungle of Bangalore, document their state and in due course attempt to ensure these stones are recognised for what they are and secured from destruction. *Epigraphia Carnatica (1905), Mysore Archaeological Reports (1906,7,11..), South Indian Inscriptions… “Inscription Stones of Bangalore” by Udayakumar.pl@gmail.com

What Can Be Done With These Inscriptions ? I am of the opinion that these stones should not be moved to a Museum or some such distant place for safe keeping. If moved, their connection with the place of installation will be lost & the opportunity to educate local people about their heritage greatly diminished! In my dreams, I see these stones encircled in a low 6" platform (to protect them) and an adjacent modern day stone carrying translations of the inscription in Kannada and English. This is exactly what has been done in the Veerashaiva Mutta at Vibhutipura ! That particular inscription tells the story of the village - that in the year 1307, the jungle around was cleared, a lake constructed and the lands exempt from tax. Imagine the pride a resident today would walk away with when he learns all that from the inscription!!!

Evolution Of The Kannada Alphabet

For fun, I tried to rewrite a beautiful vachana by Allama Prabhu a 12th-century Veershaiva saint using Kannada fonts of his time. If this were a real stone inscription Hoysala carvers would have turned it into an absolute beauty of course!

Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) Not being a trained archaeologist/epigraphist I am not conversant with the traditional technique of estampage to record inscriptions, anyways I am not keen to touch the stones at all . So I researched for digital imaging techniques that would help me capture inscriptions electronically and found a technique “Reflectance Transformation Imaging that seems pretty good for this purpose. I have tried the technique on one inscription and am amazed by the result. Here is a small video clip of that exercise. This was my first attempt with the technique and the quality of the photographs I took were far from the recommended quality . The flash failed to go off while shooting some 15 photographs, but still the result was quite impressive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx3lPVZmOyU&t=4s I hope to build RTI models of all existing stone inscriptions in Bangalore and share them freely in the time to come !
