Dear Alumni, Allow me to begin by saying what so many of us know to be true: Cumberlands is a place of transformation.

This university changed my life. I arrived here as a first-generation college student pursuing a degree in accounting. Those studies laid the foundation for my professional journey, and even more meaningfully, it is where I met my wife, Samantha. Cumberlands has always been more than a place of learning. It is a place that brings people together, fosters lifelong relationships, and prepares students to lead lives of purpose and service.

Over the years, I found myself returning to Cumberlands again and again for further education, new opportunities, and a deeper sense of calling. When I was recruited to work at Cumberlands, one moment that stands out is a conversation I had with President Larry Cockrum, who told me, “If you want to be part of something bigger than yourself, Cumberlands is that opportunity.” I believed in that vision then, and I believe in it even more today.

This work is about something greater than any one of us. It takes everyone, including faculty, staff, students, and you, our alumni, pulling in the same direction. Your prayers, your presence, and your partnership continue to make a difference in the life of this university.

I am deeply honored by the trust the university has placed in me. It is a responsibility I carry with gratitude and humility. Together, we have an opportunity to build a future that honors our mission, empowers students, and ensures that the transformative power of a Cumberlands education continues for generations to come.

ON THE COVER Each year, University of the Cumberlands honors one graduating male senior who demonstrates exemplary campus leadership and strong academic achievement with the TJ Roberts Award.

This year's recipient is Mason Smith of Warsaw, Kentucky. Smith has been highly involved on campus during his time at Cumberlands, holding leadership roles in track and field, residence life, academic affairs, and undergraduate admissions.

Dr. Quentin Young recently presented Smith with a medallion to commemorate his achievement.

This year’s event included elementary students from nine local schools: Boston, Oak Grove, Pleasant View, Whitley East, Whitley North, Whitley Central Primary, Whitley Central Intermediate, Whitley City, and Williamsburg.

One of the most touching full-circle moments came from Katy Powers, a Pleasant View staff member and Cumberlands alumna.

She once volunteered for Shoes 4 the Soul as a student. Now, as a teacher, she sees the lasting impact from a new perspective.

SHOES 4THE SOULS Each year, hundreds of local students experience a day filled with joy, compassion, and fun at Shoes 4 the Soul—an award-winning initiative hosted

by University of the Cumberlands and led by the Office of Campus Ministries. This year, the event welcomed 700 elementary and intermediate students to campus.

From the moment they stepped through the doors, children were met with highfives, upbeat music, and smiling faces.

Volunteers from across the campus community came together to create a welcoming environment rooted in what the university calls “faith in action.”

“It’s a really fun day for the children, and hopefully in the end they feel loved, valued, and respected,” said Rachel Li, associate campus minister.

After arriving at Rollins Gym, each child was paired with a Cumberlands student “buddy” who guided them through every part of the experience: getting their feet washed (echoing the humility and love 6 | WINTER 2026

modeled by Christ), selecting a new pair of shoes, receiving a hygiene kit, trying out their new shoes in a fun race, and posing for a Polaroid photo with Patriot Pete.

At the heart of Shoes 4 the Soul are the stories of transformation, some of which came full circle in a meaningful way this year.

Deputy superintendent of Whitley County School Systems, Susie Brashear, echoed the sentiment. “I saw college students out there who were once my third‑grade

“Whenever I was a student here, I worked this event, and I always felt like it was so rewarding,” Katy said. “I really loved it, especially going into the education program, knowing that I was helping these kids. But seeing it from a teacher’s perspective is a totally different world.

Just seeing the kids come back to school bragging about their shoes, seeing how much they really love this event—it’s so exciting.”

Maddy Curry, a freshman elementary education major, hopes to follow in Katy’s footsteps.

“This was my first time serving [at] Shoes 4 the Soul, and I’ve just learned so much from these kids—they’re just incredible,” Maddy shared. “One of my kids screamed in excitement when she got her shoes.

Getting to serve these kids and share the gospel with them and getting to connect with them personally is so rewarding.”

An event of this scale relies on extraordinary collaboration. More than 300 volunteers helped bring the day to life. Shoes were purchased through a partnership with Shoe Sensation in Williamsburg. And as a sweet sendoff, Forcht Bank brought an ice cream truck to campus, handing out small cups of ice cream to children as they left.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER

STUDENTSTORY

Williamsburg Independent School District (WISD), in partnership with Main Street Baptist Church and University of the Cumberlands, is launching a new early childhood center aimed at providing highquality childcare and foundational learning experiences for children from birth through age 3.

But challenges remained. Kaleigh was born with Lamellar Ichthyosis, a rare skin condition requiring constant care, and EVA, a degenerative hearing disorder. She’s deaf in one ear and has limited hearing in the other. On top of that, she faced early learning delays. Still, the biggest hurdle wasn’t physical. It was the low expectations others placed on her.

This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to strengthening families, expanding access to early education, and addressing the significant need for quality childcare in the region. The center will be operated by WISD, with physical space provided by Main Street Baptist Church and financial investment from Cumberlands.

The center will initially launch with State approval to provide care for 30 children at a cost of $30 per day per child. WISD hopes to expand the center’s capacity over time to serve even more families in the community.

Enrollment details and timelines will be shared as construction progresses.

President Quentin Young noted the initiative’s alignment with the university’s mission of service and educational access.

“Strong communities are built on strong partnerships, and this one is rooted in a shared commitment to serve,” said Young.

“We recognize the significant need for quality childcare in our community, and we are proud to invest in a solution that supports families from the very beginning.”

This partnership represents a long-term investment in children, families, and the future of Williamsburg. Together, WISD, University of the Cumberlands, and Main Street Baptist Church are building something that will leave a lasting impact, starting from the very first years of life.

Raised in Harlan County, Kentucky, Kaleigh experienced neglect early in life until her grandparents gained custody. “From then on, I had a great childhood. They gave me the path I needed to succeed.” That contrast between instability and love shaped her desire to help children feel safe and supported.

“The assumption was always, ‘You’ll just get by,’” she said.

But Kaleigh had other plans.

“People deserve to know they have a purpose in this world. That they’re not just here by accident.”

Kaleigh Nicley never expected to leave her social work class in tears. But she did—not from frustration, but from relief. For the first time, her future felt clear.

With new certainty and a deep sense of purpose, Kaleigh committed to a career in social work. Thanks to the prestigious Child Welfare Prep scholarship, her path forward just became more secure. The award covers her tuition, provides a stipend, includes hands-on training, and guarantees job placement.

At Cumberlands, she found support, mentorship, and room to grow. “All my professors have poured into me. The social work faculty especially gave me the confidence I needed.”

Heading into her junior year, finances were a concern—especially with dreams of graduate school. Then came the email: she’d received the Child Welfare Prep scholarship.

“It secures my future,” Kaleigh said. “It gives me hope that I can actually do what I set out to achieve without worrying about debt or job security.”

Her goals are big. She plans to start in child protective services, pursue clinical social work, and maybe even teach someday.

Through it all, she hopes to help others move beyond survival and into lives filled with peace and purpose.

For someone who nearly entered foster care as a child, it’s more than a scholarship.

It’s a turning point.

“Homecoming is the anchor that calls us back,” shared Erica Harris, executive director of alumni relations. “It reminds us that this university is more than a place of learning—it’s a lasting home.”

Ceremonies, tailgates, and football are all fun and meaningful parts of Homecoming, but the weekend is about more than that. As Erica said, Homecoming is ultimately about returning to the place that feels like home.

This October, Cumberlands celebrated 100 years of Homecoming. The milestone marked a century of alumni returning to Williamsburg to reconnect with old friends, seek out former mentors, and reflect on the many ways Cumberlands has shaped their lives.

Though every Homecoming is special, this year was truly a weekend to remember. Highlights included the induction of the Class of 1975 into the Creech-Boswell Society, the welcoming of new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame, and the celebration of several distinguished alumni. Guests enjoyed carnival rides, caricature drawings, and a vibrant craft market, among other festivities. The weekend wrapped up with an impressive win over Bethel and a spectacular fireworks display.

Homecoming 2025 also marked the first under the leadership of Vice President for Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement, Tyler Smith.

“Seeing generations of alumni return to campus, sharing laughter, stories, and cherished memories, was a reminder of why this work matters,” said Tyler. “Homecoming isn’t just a celebration of our past; it’s a spark that energizes our efforts for the future. After a weekend like this, I’m more inspired than ever to strengthen the ties that connect our alumni to each other and to Cumberlands.”

Victoria Paynter ’17, MS ’18, a double graduate of Cumberlands, earning a Bachelor of Science in biology and a Master of Science in digital forensic science.

As a student, she captained the women’s soccer team and held leadership roles across campus, including Campus Ambassador, Sports Information Assistant, Resident Assistant, and Residence Hall Director.

After completing her master’s, Victoria joined the United States Secret Service at the New York Field Office, where she served on the Cyber Fraud Task Force.

Her work earned her the Federal Law Enforcement Association’s Investigator of the Year award. She later served in various protective roles at major national events, including the UN General Assembly, the Presidential Inauguration, and the Presidential Address to Congress.

She now serves in the Aviation and Airspace Security Division, helping develop counter-unmanned aircraft systems (CUAS), drafting security plans, and training agents nationwide to identify and neutralize UAS threats.

Lonnie Riley, ’80, earned a Bachelor of Arts in religion and economics and served in several campus roles, including assistant to the president with a focus on church and public relations. After graduating, he became associate director of evangelism and first vice president for the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio.

H. Dale Winkler, ’94, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in accounting and returned the following year to obtain his certification in business and marketing education. He earned a Master of Arts from Cumberlands in 1999, and in 2010 he obtained a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Kentucky.

Dale serves as interim president of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), an interstate compact that works with states to improve public education at every level, from early childhood through doctoral education and the workforce. He leads a team of 120 program managers and research analysts that help policymakers make informed decisions by providing accurate data and recommendations and assists educators in strengthening student learning through professional development, coaching, and proven practices.

In 1999, Riley and his wife, Belinda, moved to Lynch, Kentucky, where they helped launch 25 ministries and welcomed nearly 100,000 volunteers to support community outreach. His work has earned numerous honors, including the Governor’s Award, Missionary of the Year (Kentucky Baptist Convention and North American Mission Board), and multiple leadership and community service awards.

Riley has shared biblical teachings around the world and served as a keynote speaker at various conventions and seminars. In 2019, he founded Lonnie Riley Ministries, Inc., offering consulting services to faithbased groups and small communities seeking renewal through ministry partnerships.

Athletic Hall of Fame

Prior to his role at SREB, Dale served as a high school teacher, principal, and associate commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Education. In each role, he has focused on helping teachers, counselors, and school leaders empower youth to connect the classroom with the real world.

Sarah Allen, ’17, MA ’18, ranks among the most decorated women’s wrestlers in Patriots history. A four-time WCWA All12 | WINTER 2026

American, she was the first in the program to reach 100 career wins and remains the all-time leader with 132. She also holds the program record for career falls (41) and posted two of the top five single-season win totals.

During her time at Cumberlands, Allen tallied 19 top-eight finishes and earned All-American honors each year, including a runner-up finish at the 2016 WCWA National Championships. She won the NAIA Invitational that same season and capped her career with a third-place national finish and the Patriot Award in 2017.

Her senior season included podium finishes at 3D and Indoor Nationals and multiple team medals. She graduated holding two top qualifying score records.

Kirby earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration and communication arts in 2019, followed by an MBA in 2020. She now serves as Cumberlands’ executive director of admissions.

Klouda was also a standout student, earning CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year in 2019—becoming the only Patriot ever to do so.

Allen graduated with degrees in exercise and sport science and criminal justice.

She joined the Cumberlands coaching staff that same year and was named head coach in 2023.

A two-time NAIA All-American Honorable Mention, Smith helped the team rise to national prominence and was instrumental in its historic 1988 undefeated season.

Courtnie (Carr) Kirby, ’19, MA ’20, was a four-time USCA All-American and, upon graduation, the most decorated archer in program history. She captured four individual national titles and nine individual podium finishes—second most in team history—and helped lead her teams to nine gold medals in national events.

Kirby was instrumental in Cumberlands’ historic triple crown in 2016-17, claiming

Christina Klouda, ’19, is the only four-time MSC Swimmer of the Year in Cumberlands history. A two-time NAIA national champion, she earned 22 CSCAA and 17 NAIA All-American honors, won 19 conference titles, and set five school records. Klouda is the first swimmer in MSC history to win the same two events—the 200 back and 400 IM—at four consecutive championships.

She made an immediate impact as a freshman, winning four MSC titles and earning five All-American honors. Her success continued with consistent national podium finishes, including a national runner-up in the 200 back and a national title in 2019 as part of the 400 medley relay—Cumberlands' only relay team to win a national title.

From 1985 to 1989, Smith was known for his physical presence and relentless blocking. In 1988, he helped the Indians go 10-0 and lead the nation in rushing, averaging 342.6 yards per game. He was a key blocker for Scott Hamilton’s recordsetting season of 1,462 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.

After graduation, Smith served in the U.S. Army during Operation Desert Storm and retired in 2011.

OH CUMBERLANDS, LET’S GIVE A YELL! BRINGING THE FIGHT SONG BACK TO THE STANDS It’s a crisp fall afternoon at James H. Taylor II Stadium. The Patriots are holding a narrow lead, but the visiting team is pressing hard. One missed play could change everything.

Fans clutch their scarves and lean forward in their seats, breathless. The tension is thick. Then, a familiar sound cuts through the air.

Brass instruments blare. Drums thunder.

From the bleachers to the sidelines, alumni, students, and families rise together in a chorus that will echo for generations:

“For the red, white, and blue, We'll ever fight for you Until we have the highest score.

We’ll race them from the center, Block them from the side Until they want to fight No more, no more, no more.

On every battlefield you’ll see the Patriot shield, and then you’ll know We’re doing swell.

We have a winning theme For our One Big Team, Oh Cumberlands, let’s give a yell!”

Fight songs do more than spark school spirit; they bring us together. Whether you're in the stands or decades removed from campus, the melody of your alma mater’s fight song can pull you back to a

moment when you were part of something larger than yourself.

Cumberlands’ Fight Song is especially meaningful thanks to its rich and somewhat mysterious past.

According to a note in the 1984 Cumberland yearbook, Williamsburg City School music instructor Bill Allison composed the music with help from then Dean of Women Emma McPherson and a group of pep club members. But the lyrics?

That’s where the mystery begins.

No one knows who wrote the original words or how they became widely known.

Yet at some point, these lyrics became part of the tradition: “Oh, for maroon and white, We’ll forever fight, fight, fight Until those long shots raise that score.

We’ll shoot them from the center, Score them from the side Until they want to fight No more, no more, no more.

On every battlefield you’ll see the Indian shield, and then you’ll know We’re doing swell.

So for the team, team, team, Get up the steam, steam, steam, Oh Cumberland, give a yell!”

This version is similar to the current Fight Song but includes references to the original mascot and colors. Over time,

the lyrics evolved, both to reflect the university’s modern identity and because the original version had largely faded from memory. The update was part of a broader effort to renew the tradition.

That effort began four years ago with Erica Harris (Broome), who collaborated with a former band director at Cumberlands on a rewrite. Although that early attempt didn’t gain lasting traction, it laid the groundwork for what came next.

When Dr. Duane Warfield recently became director of the band, he took interest in the project and reached out to Erica. She had a strong connection to the Fight Song— her father, Dr. Broome, rarely missed a Cumberlands game, and she had grown up hearing the tune again and again.

A few years ago, during a game, Erica noticed something slightly off in the performance. Most people wouldn’t have picked up on it, but she had heard the song more times than she could count.

When Dr. Warfield mentioned that the lyrics didn’t seem to match the rhythm, Erica immediately knew the cause. She and Duane worked together over several weeks to make careful adjustments, ensuring the lyrics aligned perfectly with the original tune.

This year, the revitalized Fight Song returned during Homecoming. It was a moment years in the making.

Cumberlands celebrated its Winter 2025 Commencement on Monday, December 15, honoring more than 4,000 students who completed associate, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees.

An estimated 180 students completed an associate degree, 889 earned a bachelor’s degree, 2,508 earned a master’s degree, 205 earned an educational specialist degree, and 470 earned a doctoral degree.

“Commencement marks more than the end of a chapter; it is the beginning of a life lived with greater purpose and possibility,” said Dr. Quentin Young, president of University of the Cumberlands. The event marked his first commencement as university president.

Dr. Young and the university recognized 237 undergraduate students as J.T. Vallandingham Scholars, an academic honor awarded for exceptional performance and named in memory of a beloved Cumberlands professor.

“We believe education is more than knowledge gained,” Dr. Young added. “It is a foundation for service, leadership, and transformation.”

As graduates take their next steps, wherever life leads them, they carry with them the growth and purpose shaped by their time at Cumberlands, equipped to make a lasting impact in the communities they serve.

“As you step into the future, remember that you do not go alone,” Dr. Young told the graduating class. “You carry the hopes of those who taught you, the pride of those who care for you, and the legacy of a university that believes in you. You remain, and will always be, a part of the Cumberlands family.”

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT No one can fully anticipate life’s challenges. We set goals, make plans, and get to work, hoping for smooth sailing. But sometimes, storms roll in without warning. The real question becomes: can we weather them?

In spring 2024, Elizabeth Dudley McKenna EdD ’25 was running out of strength. She was navigating a divorce, helping her children adjust to new routines, and managing serious medical challenges for both kids.

“In one of my lowest moments, I reached out to my advisor, Dr. Logan Issacs, to share what I was going through.”

“He showed me incredible kindness and support,” she recalled. Together, they developed a new plan. Rather than leaving the program entirely, Dudley would take a semester off to focus on her family and give herself time to breathe.

When the time came to return, she took a deep breath and remembered her “why.”

“I reminded myself why I started this journey in the first place: to grow personally and professionally, to challenge myself academically and cognitively, and, most importantly, to show my children that anything can be accomplished through perseverance, resilience, and belief in yourself.”

Having already received her Superintendent Certification from Cumberlands in 2023, this December, Dudley graduated with her Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

Looking ahead, she carries the impact of that life-changing conversation with Dr. Issacs as a model for how she hopes to lead others.

“Effective leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about creating spaces where others feel heard, respected, and empowered to be part of the solution.”

In her professional life, that means showing up with purpose and compassion as head principal at Camargo Elementary School.

“Camargo isn’t just where I lead; it’s where my heart is,” she said.

“I’m deeply invested in this school and community, and I want to continue creating an environment where students and staff feel supported, challenged, and valued. I want to drive positive change—whether that’s improving instructional practices, strengthening family partnerships, or fostering a culture of belonging and high expectations.”

On a personal level, Dudley has gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be present for her two children. Taking a semester off helped her rediscover the value of rest, reflection, and quality time with those she loves.

“My next steps involve continuing to lead with passion and purpose, staying open to new leadership opportunities, and cherishing the personal moments that remind me why this journey has been so meaningful.”

For many student-athletes, college graduation can feel like the end of an era. And in some ways, it is. But it doesn’t have to mean saying goodbye to your sport!

Enter Benjamin Kendrick, ’18, a former Patriot golfer—whose journey took him from conference championships to launching his own business: Elevate Golf PT. Now a TPI-certified physical therapist, Kendrick has found a unique way to fuse his lifelong passion for golf with his commitment to health and wellness, serving clients of all ages and skill levels, from casual players to elite athletes.

What first brought you to Cumberlands?

I was originally drawn to UC because of the golf program and the Christian faith foundations. What kept me at UC were the relationships I built with my teammates, my classmates, the professors, and faculty/staff outside of my department.

What are some of your favorite memories from your time on the golf team?

I have specific memories of achievements and highlights, like being stormed by my teammates after winning conference in a playoff my junior year. But when I look back, my favorite memories are the van rides to and from the golf course, the nights spent on the road in hotel rooms, and the competition we had with each other on the golf course.

You're now a TPI-certified trainer and run Elevate Golf PT. For those unfamiliar, how would you describe what you do and who you serve?

In my business, I work as a physical therapist for both golfers and non-golfers of all ages, skill levels, and walks of life. I am certified through the Titleist Performance Institute and do golf performance training in individual and group settings. This can take on many shapes and forms depending on what my clients or students need. I perform TPI golf evaluations as well as training sessions where I help players improve their game through specific exercise and training principles. Everything I do is a blend of all the education and experience I have gained thus far. I am never operating solely as a trainer, or as a golfer, or as a PT—everything I do has a blend of them all, and that is what makes my services so unique and valuable for golfers of all skill levels.

At what point did you start thinking about physical therapy as a career path? Was there a turning point or experience that shaped that decision?

I actually did not consider physical therapy as a serious career option until after graduation. My plan throughout college was to go on to medical school. I took the necessary classes and took the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) in preparation for applying to medical school, but I decided to turn professional in golf instead. After a few years of trying to make it to the PGA Tour, I started weighing other options. That’s when PT came on my radar. It was a great blend of my passions for health, wellness, and exercise.

Often times, students don't see an avenue to continue doing what they love as a career. At what point did you realize that you could incorporate golf with PT? Did you always feel confident you'd experience your current level of success?

That’s the beauty of physical therapy—the skills and knowledge can be used and applied in so many ways. I think something that allows me to incorporate the two is how much I love golf. I love all aspects of it. I love helping senior golfers who may not shoot the best scores continue to play as late in life as they can with relative success and enjoyment in their later years. I also love helping high-level players at the junior, college, and professional level, following their careers and being a small part of their success and development.

What has surprised you most about launching your own business? What have been some of the biggest challenges or most rewarding winds?

So many things have surprised me and been big learning curves for me as I’ve launched this business of my own—and I am only just beginning! Some of the biggest have been time management, resource management, planning, and being adaptable.

I have really leaned on those around me who have gone through these steps, both in the PT space, the golf space, and other industries as well.

My wife Jessie and I also had our first child last December, a short time after I launched the early stages of my business, so one of the biggest wins for me has been being able to be there with her and my wife for these early stages of her life.

What advice would you give to current student-athletes or recent grads trying to figure out how to merge their passions into a career?

Find something you are good at and something you love, and don’t settle for paths that are laid out before you. Whether it’s something like PT or something else, what you do doesn’t have to make sense or look like what other people do or what you are told to do. You can make it work—it just takes creativity, perseverance, and determination.

What's next for you and Elevate Golf PT? Are there any goals, projects, or growth opportunities on the horizon?

I am continuing to explore and expand options for my business—how to grow it and reach both golfers and non-golfers to truly diversify my services and the patients and clients I serve!

ach year, students, faculty, and staff at University of the Cumberlands gather in the O. Wayne Rollins Center for Shoes 4 the Soul: a day grounded in servant leadership, compassion, and transformation.

Local elementary school children visit campus to receive new shoes, socks, and hygiene items, and to have their feet gently washed by Cumberlands students, modeling the humility and love of Christ. It’s a powerful reflection of the university’s mission to serve others well.

For Dr. Young, the mission is personal. Cumberlands isn’t just where he works. It’s a place where transformation occurs.

That belief has guided him for more than a decade. Whether as Director of Business Services, Chief Financial Officer, or now as President, Dr. Young has led by example. He comes in early, stays late, and does whatever it takes to support the mission and vision of the university.

Inside the gym, the atmosphere is full of life—music playing, voices rising, students laughing. But at the heart of the experience is something more personal: the connection between each child and their Cumberlands “buddy.”

Dr. Young holds this belief because he experienced it firsthand.

Changing the world doesn’t always come through grand, earthshaking events. Sometimes, the most meaningful impact begins by changing one life at a time. As a four-time Cumberlands graduate, he considers his time at the university to be deeply transformative.

Each buddy is a current college student who volunteers to guide a child through the day. From the moment they’re paired, the buddy offers steady attention and intentional care, helping the child feel safe, celebrated, and seen. They sit side by side. They tie their laces. They ask questions, share smiles, and speak encouragement into a young life that may not always hear it.

That personal impact is part of what drew him back to Cumberlands. After graduating with his bachelor’s degree in 2011, Dr. Young spent several years with the Forcht Group of Kentucky, where he worked across accounting, banking, and real estate.

While he values that experience, the pull to return to a place that shaped him was too strong to ignore.

For many Cumberlands students, serving as a buddy is a fullcircle moment. Some once attended these same local schools.

Now, as college students, they’re stepping into a role that models servant leadership in the most personal way.

Dr. Young accepted his first role at the university as Director of Business Services in 2016. In that role, he managed operations like human resources, risk management, and food services. After a year in the position, he stepped into a new role as Director of Finance and Budget. In 2019, he was promoted to Chief Financial Officer.

This year, that same spirit of service was reflected in Dr. Quentin Young, who slipped into the gym quietly that morning to serve alongside them.

Filling water, fetching T-shirts, and greeting children with a warm smile, Dr. Young moved through the gym with purpose. He stepped in where needed but was always mindful not to shift the focus. He came to help, not to be seen.

"Since I’ve been here, I’ve always seen my work as more than a job,” Dr. Young shared. “It’s about continuing a legacy of transformation. Transformation in students, in staff, in our region, and beyond.”

Cumberlands Through and Through “I chose Cumberlands for my undergraduate degree because of the quality and the campus atmosphere.

When it came time for graduate school, I already knew the value here. The online programs let me grow as a working professional, and over time, I wanted to broaden my knowledge and credentials.

That flexibility made all the difference.”

The Young family’s connection to Cumberlands is both personal and longstanding. Dr. Young and his wife, Samantha, ’14, are Whitley County and Knox County natives. The two met while studying accounting at the university. He was drawn to her intelligence, a quality he continues to admire.

Early in her career, before Dr. Young joined the university, Samantha worked in Cumberlands’ accounts payable office.

Today, she plays an active role in supporting the family’s financial planning at home. She’s also known for the warmth, generosity, and joy she brings to her role as both a devoted mother and wife of the university president.

The Youngs have three children: Evan, the oldest; Ella, the middle; and Emery, the youngest. Each brings a special spark to the family.

Evan exudes confidence and class. Ella brings steadiness and wit.

And at just three years old, Emery is the “wild child” who keeps everyone laughing.

"My wife and children are my daily reminder of why this work matters and why I believe so deeply in the mission of this university," Dr. Young shared. "They are the most important part of my story."

The Young household is full of life, joy, and strong values. These qualities naturally extend into the work they do at Cumberlands.

So, when new doors opened at the university, stepping through them felt less like a leap and more like the next right step.

"Cumberlands has been transformational for Samantha and me, and we want others to have that same opportunity. I truly believe I’m here only by God’s grace. It’s a blessing and an honor to help advance the mission and vision of Cumberlands and to make a positive impact on the lives of the faculty, staff, and students I encounter each day."

Appalachian by Heart, Patriots by Spirit There are two things the Young family especially enjoys in their free time: being outdoors and cheering on the Cumberlands Patriots.

“We certainly love the outdoors. Whether it’s camping, hiking, or fishing, I enjoy anything that connects me back to nature. God’s creation is a joy that refreshes me. And we’re in the perfect place for it here in Whitley County, right in the foothills of Appalachia. We have Cumberland Falls, the Cumberland River, the Daniel Boone Forest, and miles of trails all around us. The place we live...we’re so blessed.”

“Outside of that, we love rooting for the Patriots. That’s especially big for Evan, our oldest. He’s a huge fan. If we’re not outside, reading, or working, we’re probably watching a Cumberlands game. And if there’s not a game happening, Evan’s usually at home watching highlight videos from Cumberlands Sports Information.

It’s a great hobby, and we have some really incredible teams.”

As Much as I Can That’s Samantha Young’s response to how involved she hopes to be on campus. Why? Because, according to Samantha, Cumberlands has always been home.

As she and Dr. Young step into this new chapter, Samantha hopes to help current and future Cumberlands families feel that same deep connection. “I’d like to be a helpful and kind presence on campus,” she said. “I hope to have several opportunities to open our home to the Cumberlands community. The President’s House tends to spark curiosity, but at its heart, it’s a home. I want students and families to feel completely at ease walking through its doors, not intimidated, just warmly welcomed.”

Her work in the accounts payable office at Cumberlands, gave her a behind-the-scenes look at how much work goes into supporting students, and it deepened her love for the institution.

“It just made my love for Cumberlands grow even more than I thought possible,” she said, “and it inspired me to give back when given the opportunity.”

Precision and Purpose The activities we take on in our youth often do more than fill our time. They shape our values, sharpen our focus, and lay the groundwork for who we become. For Dr. Quentin Young, archery was more than a sport; it was an early teacher, instilling lessons that continue to guide his life and leadership today.

“Archery played a significant role in my life when I was young.

Before I was even old enough to drive, I was traveling to tournaments and working with sponsors. That came with responsibility. I had to represent companies well and interact professionally with adults. It made me more aware of how I carried myself and pushed me to think beyond the moment I was in. Looking back, it really helped shape my work ethic and mindset early on.”

“There’s a mental side to archery that people don’t always realize. It’s a sport of focus, control, and consistency. A lot of it is mental, some would say ninety-nine percent. That kind of discipline changed how I approached everything. I started taking my goals more seriously. Even my hobbies had more intention behind them.”

“My coach was one of the first people who taught me what it really means to be responsible. He taught me the importance of giving back, of returning a favor, and showing appreciation when people do good things for you. He talked a lot about accountability...not just for your performance, but for how you treat others. Those lessons stayed with me. I carry them into this presidency today, because I believe leadership is about more than results. It’s about how you serve and how you show up for others.”

As both an alumnus and Whitley County local, Dr. Young deeply appreciates the university’s history and hopes to honor and build upon the work of those who came before him.

"I think we have to look back to the past, to the founding, to why we’re here and what we’ve done throughout the life of the university. I have great reminders all around me. Even above my desk I have a picture of Dr. Boswell and a quote from him that reads, 'There is so much need to be answered, so much work yet to be done. We have never yet failed the youth of our Kentucky Hills. We hope we never will.'"

While honoring the past, Dr. Young is also focused on the future.

"As we move forward, there’s a lot of tradition we need to hold to.

But that tradition should also encourage us to be innovative and to think differently. We will always look back and remember who 28 | WINTER 2026

we are and why we’re here. At the same time, we will look ahead."

Dr. Young points to three guiding principles for continued success: innovation, transformation, and inspiration.

"Innovation in that we should always be challenging ourselves, being better, doing better."

"Transformation. This is where it hits home. We believe education has the power to transform lives. When one life is transformed, it ripples outward to impact families, then communities. It’s a multiplier effect."

"And finally, inspiration. We want our students to walk away seeing a bigger picture. Cumberlands is a place of hope and inspiration that equips students to pursue brighter futures beyond the scope of what they ever thought possible. When

"She had a big smile on her face and said, 'I just overheard a third grader talking with their buddy.' The child had asked, 'When I come to Cumberlands, can I do this too?'"

That spirit of transformative inspiration is exactly what Dr. Young hopes to carry forward in his presidency. And for him, one moment from this year’s Shoes 4 the Soul event brought that vision to life.

In that small, sincere question, Dr. Young saw the heart of the university’s mission in motion. A local child, someone who may have never imagined attending college, suddenly saw themselves on this campus. They saw themselves in their Cumberlands buddy. And for perhaps the first time, they began to dream.

"Kids were talking, laughing, and just living in the moment," Dr. Young recalled. "They were showing off their new shoes, and you could tell they were so proud and grateful. It was obvious that young lives were being impacted in meaningful ways."

As he stepped back to reflect on the energy in the room, a staff member from the Whitley County School system approached him with a story.

"They’re seeing the example lived out. Hopefully it inspires the next generation," Dr. Young shared. "That’s what this is all about, planting seeds of service, faith, and hope that will grow long after the day is over."

“You don’t need layman’s terms to talk about cancer analytics. It’s addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. That’s really it. It’s ‘Do you have cancer, and what can we do to make your tomorrow a little bit better?’

That’s what it boils down to.”

Cancer doesn’t happen in a vacuum. More often than not, the diagnosis comes when you least expect it— when it feels entirely out of place amidst the backdrop of the happiest moments of your life.

For Kandace West ’17, her dad’s cancer looked like her mother scheduling chemo treatments around college visits.

Kandace’s family’s location in Horse Cave, Kentucky, only compounded the challenge. Living in a rural area made accessing crucial supportive care more difficult, with most clinics located miles from home.

“When you’re 17, you’re focused on chasing your college dreams. You can’t possibly imagine something as life-altering as a cancer diagnosis taking place alongside this huge milestone in your life. But it did, and it was hard watching my parents navigate through that while also trying to help my siblings and me with our next steps.”

How do you finance long hospital stays without sacrificing college funds? How do you locate a housing application you printed out among a mirage of script

Juggling all these responsibilities took a serious mental and physical toll.

Despite the distance, her family pushed through, doing the best they could. Even so, Kandace can’t help but wonder how things might have been different. Only, hindsight is 20/20.

“Looking back, Mom needed so much support she just didn’t have access to—emotional, financial, and social.

I wish I could’ve helped her navigate it all, knowing what I know now. But no one ever asked her, ‘How else can we help you?’ Nothing.”

The experience left a lasting impression.

“While I was at Cumberlands, any time cancer came up in my biology courses, I was just enthralled by it. It’s such an interesting concept to me—that one little genetic mishap happens, and a whole host of things can take place. I felt a calling to make a difference; I just didn’t really know how. Then, one of my professors introduced me to cancer analytics and the world of epidemiology.”

What her professor shared opened a new path: one where she could make a meaningful impact using, in her own words, “simple mathematical procedures” to advocate for the kind of support her mother lacked but that so many others still desperately need.

Today, Kandace serves as a Cancer Analytics and Registry Manager at St. Joseph’s/ Candler Health System in Savannah, Georgia. She supports an all-female team of seven who transform data into powerful cancer-fighting and caregiver-supporting initiatives.

“Literally, from A-Z, my team sits through a patient’s story— not just one, but thousands— and we turn them into one large picture to help make insightful decisions and craft targeted interventions that work.”

“What we’ve done is take data, prove need, and set out to resolve issues that go far beyond medical treatment alone.”

One of the team’s most significant initiatives is the implementation of a thoracic rapid access clinic, or “track clinic reform.” Through their advocacy and research, they created a one-stop shop for cancer patients and their families.

“As soon as someone is diagnosed with stage three or four cancer, they’re fast-tracked into our clinic, where they see all the necessary specialists—radiation and medical oncologists, pulmonologist, surgeon, nurse navigator, dietitian—on the same day to accelerate treatment based on data-driven care.”

In other words, patients are able to shrink the time between receiving their diagnosis and beginning treatment, all thanks to epidemiological data. Their work is especially impactful for those from rural areas.

“When it comes to oncology care, it goes beyond just getting your chemo and radiation. It’s a whole layer of things. When you’re in a rural area, taking extra time to seek out and utilize these supportive services is a big ask because you might already be driving as far as three hours to your initial appointment alone. So, we are doing our best to bring them everything possible.”

“Most of us tend to think through the lens of the person who received the diagnosis. But cancer impacts more than the patient themselves. Caregivers, whether that looks like family or friends, are in need of crucial support as well.”

Supporting the supporter is a challenge. Caring for a cancer patient can become all-consuming, making caregivers blind to—or at least dismissive of—their own needs. The solution?

Anticipate and address their worries and concerns, meeting them where they are.

Services like counselors, pastors, social workers, financial navigators, and nurse advocates are available to assist both patients and their loved ones. Having access to these resources helps families holistically address their mental, physical, and emotional needs. Still, connecting them with help isn’t always straightforward.

“Reflecting on my own experience, if my mother were to be asked, ‘How can I help you?’ She would never admit, ‘Hey, I’m financially struggling. I don’t know what to do.’ And so what we’re trying to do is offload verbally emitting that.”

“We ask ourselves, ‘Would it be easier if a patient wrote it down electronically?’ or ‘Would it be helpful if the nurse came in and asked, “Hey, just checking in on your family here. Is there somebody I can talk to?”’ So they can start the conversation that way. We’re exploring ways to be more anticipatory of needs.”

Ultimately, Kandace is using her expertise to offer others what she wished she could have provided to her own parents: “a whole lot of grace.” She and her team are collecting data and translating it into meaningful services—meeting people in some of life’s hardest moments and helping make their tomorrow a little better than their today.

“Nobody wants cancer. Simultaneously, nobody wants to say, ‘Hey, this is really hard for me.’ But when you’re in a position that you really have to talk about this kind of stuff—the good, the bad, and the ugly—you just have to show grace and love.”

“This work is triumphant, it’s sad, it’s exhilarating, and it’s one of the most emotionally wrapped up occupations a person can have. At the same time, it’s the most rewarding. Data is a powerful tool that can impact lives not just today but also for future generations. I take immense pride in the influence I am bringing to my community through these efforts.”

If you or someone you love is facing a cancer diagnosis, know this: you are not alone. Support is out there—for patients, caregivers, and families. Ask your care team what services are available. Sometimes, just knowing help exists is the first step toward healing!

However, the team’s mission extends beyond patient care alone.

CAREERS Creativity is not the first word that comes to mind when considering a career in information technology.

David Holcomb, Ph.D. ’22, believes that’s a fundamental misunderstanding. “My advice?” Holcomb says. “Be you and draw no boxes.”

In cybersecurity, creativity isn’t optional. Between ever-evolving threats and ever-tightening regulations, imaginative problem-solving is essential.

“In a field where threats are constantly evolving, imagination becomes just as valuable as technical expertise. The key is finding trusted sources, having talented people around you, and always learning.”

Though Holcomb had long held this belief, it was during a leadership course at Cumberlands that he first gave it serious reflection.

“My instructor asked, ‘Do you agree we need more people to think outside the box?’ I said, ‘No, we need fewer people drawing boxes.’”

That mindset shaped his approach to both leadership and learning. “Continuous learning helps you stay curious,” he says. “It reminds you how to ask questions, dig deeper, and stay open.”

During his graduate studies at Cumberlands, Holcomb built more than technical expertise. He found opportunities to flex his creative muscles through challenging coursework that pushed him to look beyond the expected.

“Several of my classes let me explore topics I used to evaluate analytical approaches or build proposals,” he explains.

One of his favorite challenges? Finding creative, real-world applications for complex IT concepts. That included investigating how blockchain could improve transparency in insurance or applying national infrastructure models to help organizations assess cybersecurity risk.

Since earning his doctorate, Holcomb has advanced to chief operating officer at Maxxsure, a firm focused on reducing companies’ cyber exposure.

“If you fix the root causes of cyber exposure, you can avoid cyber events,” he says.

But uncovering those root causes takes more than technical skill—it takes creativity.

Holcomb and his team tackled the challenge of building an algorithm that not only assessed cyber risk but also translated it into dollar amounts. That breakthrough laid the groundwork for future innovations, including plans to integrate artificial intelligence into both the algorithm and user interface.

In 2023, Holcomb co-authored his first book, Building a Data Culture: The Usage and Flow Data Culture Model, alongside Dr. Gary Griffin. The book draws on more than 60 years of combined experience and introduces an original framework for understanding how organizations use and manage data.

“It’s an innovative model that captures how an organization allows data to flow and how it uses that data,” Holcomb says. “The framework gives readers practical tools to shape their ideal data culture.”

Building a Data Culture: The Usage and Flow Data Culture Model was named one of the five books every data professional should read in 2024 by Fit Academy. It reached the #1 spot for new releases in its category several times and climbed as high as #3 among all management books in January 2024.

Holcomb’s journey is proof that a career in information technology can be every bit as creative as it is technical. Whether he’s building algorithms, leading teams, or writing books, he’s focused on innovative solutions that truly make a difference.

“I hope I inspire someone to be willing to give rather than take, teach rather than hoard, be honest with themselves and others, and smile and laugh out loud,” he says. “We are given this opportunity by His grace; we should be thankful and leave it better than we found it."

1970s Donnie Gray, '73, was posthumously inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame this year. During his 21-year tenure coaching Clay County, (KY), girls' basketball, Gray amassed a 505-142 (.780) record, including eleven District and nine Region championships, the 1989 Kentucky Girl's Sweet 16 State Championship, a state runner-up finish in 1992 and semifinalist honors in 1993. Gray was a three-time AP Coach of the Year and four-time Region 13 Coach of the Year. The Donnie Gray Shootout and Donnie Gray Court are named in his honor.

His wife, Beveryly Stonecipher Gray, also a UC alum, accepted the honor on his behalf.

Finalists in each sport are selected through a combination of not only onfield performance, but also local association activity and leadership training efforts and the mentoring of newer officials. One official in each sport is named.

Bill Lyttle, ’75, was recently honored

by Clay County High School for his 50 years of service to the school’s sports programs and student-athletes.

To recognize his half-century of dedication, CCHS presented him with a commemorative plaque and unveiled his personal logo, which will appear on every ticket sold for the remainder of the school year. Bill serves on our Alumni Board as an emeritus member. The only time he steps away from their athletic event's is for Homecoming here.

1980s John W. McCauley, ’81, has compiled and edited Kentucky Is My Home, a new collection of Jesse Stuart’s previously unpublished poetry, published in 2025. This book will continue to give life to Stuart’s poetry and his legend as a world-famous author, a far-sighted conservationist, and a respected spokesman for the people of Appalachia.

Honora (Pollard) Adkins-Curry, ’86, retired from Uvalde CISD (Texas), after 38 years of public education.

She currently teaches first grade in a private school setting, making the 2025-2026 school year her 40th year of teaching.

Bess Opichka Anderson, passed on December 3, 2025. Affectionately known as Miss Bess, she served as a Residence Hall Director from 1985 until her retirement in 2013. She was known for her gentle nature and genuine care.

Dr. Clarence "Marty" Martin Brooks, passed on June 9, 2025.

Dr. Brooks served Cumberlands from 1978 to 1997, holding key roles including Director of Counseling Services and Chairman of the Psychology Department. Dr. Brooks will be fondly remembered for his welcoming smile and unexpected humor that brightened so many lives within our Cumberlands Family.

Faculty Henrietta (Stengel) Duke, ’64, passed on May 2, 2025. Henrietta helped pioneer the University's special education certification program, serving as one of the first two teachers for the program.

Dr. Oline Carmical, Jr., ’66, passed on April 8, 2025. He returned to Cumberland in 1974 to begin his teaching career, retiring in 2021.

Known for his quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge, Dr. Oline's passion for learning spanned classical cinema, history, politics, and legal studies. He leaves a lasting legacy through his decades of dedicated teaching and a successful philanthropic grant that continues to support Cumberlands faculty today.

Cumberlands ^^Couple Ser hii & Al ina Serhii Shevchenko, ’25, and Alina Boshchuk, ’26, first met in Kyiv, Ukraine. Both were competitive runners, and Alina had traveled to the capital city to train with a coach who was also working with Serhii at the time. Initially, Serhii believed Alina was out of his league.

“Then one day, our running group went to a pizzeria. We decided to take a shortcut over a fence. Everyone climbed over easily, but Alina got stuck at the top and was afraid to jump,” Serhii shared.

“She looked at me and said, ‘Will you catch me?’ At that moment, I felt something special.”

“His energy was so different from others that I immediately wanted to get to know him more,” Alina added. “His lively and cheerful nature really won me over.”

“It was our little therapy,” Alina said. “A chance to talk about our day, share experiences, and spend time with every cat we met.

(We’d take them all home if we could.)”

Both Serhii and Alina describe their experience at Cumberlands as life-changing. The university provided not only a high-quality education but also a supportive community that they say will endure well beyond their time as students.

“Cumberlands is special because it combines strong academics with genuine human connection,” Alina explained. “The university really understands what international students go through. You’re surrounded by people who inspire, support, and believe in you— and that’s what makes the experience unforgettable.”

Their relationship began in Ukraine—first as close friends, then later as an official couple after Serhii gifted Alina flowers and a small ring to ask her to be his girlfriend.

“The university has supported us from the very beginning,” Serhii agreed. “We’re deeply grateful, especially to our track and field team, where we found not only understanding and encouragement but also a new home, friends, and mentors.”

Fortunately, the bond they formed in Ukraine only deepened when both were recruited to run at the collegiate level for University of the Cumberlands.

In 2023, Serhii and Alina exchanged wedding vows in an intimate ceremony at the home of their coach, Bradley Sowder, who also officiated.

Transitioning from bustling city life in Kyiv to the slower pace of Williamsburg came with its challenges, but Serhii and Alina found creative ways to enjoy their time together outside of training and studies.

“What a moment in time that will last forever,” Sowder reflected.

“It was simply wonderful to witness the love these two share and the impact they have on each other. Ukrainian by birth, part of our family forever.”

“We both love animals—especially cats,” Serhii said. “So we often went downtown, grabbed something tasty, and went on what we called ‘cat patrol.’ We would walk around, meet local cats, and give them funny names. Sometimes we’d pet them, too. It was just a good way to enjoy some fresh air together.”

Today, Alina continues working toward her degree while Serhii serves as a volunteer assistant coach for the track and field team. He also works as a project manager at Pepsi Cola Bottling of Corbin, Kentucky. Together, they look forward to continued personal and professional growth, new challenges, and many more miles (on the track and in life) together.

Whitney Baker Celebrating a Survivor!

It’s September 10, 2025, at University of the Cumberlands.

A Christmas Shadow

The morning air carries a chill, softened by warm rays of sunshine fighting to stay relevant against the creeping onset of fall. It’s that time of year when one chapter closes and another begins—an unmistakable shift from one season to the next.

In December of 2024, Whitney noticed something was off.

“I first found the spot the week before Christmas, but I couldn’t get it checked until after the new year,” she shared.

Students chat as they hurry to class. Professors stop to greet one another. Nothing feels out of the ordinary.

Except, if you listen closely, you’ll hear the faint sound of Reba McEntire’s “I’m a Survivor” floating from the wraparound porch of the undergraduate admissions building:

My roots are planted in the past And though my life is changing fast who I am is who I wanna be...

With gentle hands and the heart of a fighter, I'm a survivor.

The song plays like a personal anthem: a quiet, defiant victory tune for Whitney Baker, ’17, MBA, ’20, associate director of admissions and recent breast cancer survivor, as she celebrates the end of a long battle with cancer.

“Everyone knows Reba is my favorite comfort show. I’ve watched it start to finish at least five times,” Whitney said with a smile. “So when the admissions team picked that song for the moment, it couldn’t have been more fitting. It was perfectly ‘me,’ and it made me laugh in the best way.”

While her two daughters, ages two and six, opened their gifts with childlike wonder, Whitney held a quiet weight of uncertainty, waiting for answers.

Her anxiety was soon confirmed. “After that initial appointment, I went through mammograms, ultrasounds, X-rays, MRIs, PET and CT scans, countless biopsies, and bloodwork—everything the doctors needed to fully understand what they were dealing with.”

Then came the diagnosis.

“I was told I had Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer that had already spread to my spine,” Whitney said.

Though the news hit hard, she knew she had to keep fighting. “I had two little girls counting on me. I knew I had to do whatever it took to heal and be here for my family.”

Resilience in Motion Over the next six months, Whitney underwent intensive chemotherapy at the UK Markey Cancer Center. Her biggest fear wasn’t the treatment itself—it was the possibility of being absent from her daughters’ lives.

“That was my biggest worry from the beginning. At two and six years old, they didn’t really understand what was happening.”

After the emotional hurdle of losing her hair, Whitney began

seeing signs of hope.

“To everyone’s surprise, including the doctors, I never once got sick or experienced the usual side effects,” she said. “Because of that, I was able to continue working, stay involved in my daughters’ lives, and maintain a somewhat normal routine.”

But “somewhat” didn’t mean easy. In addition to her everyday responsibilities, Whitney had to juggle treatments, doctor’s appointments, and regular check-ins.

Thankfully, her Cumberlands family made sure she didn’t face it alone.

A Culture of Care “The admissions team really is like a family,” Whitney said. “We joke that we all live in the admissions house together from 8 to 5, and over the past nine months, that bond has meant everything to me.”

One tradition that took on new meaning for her is the office’s weekly “encouragement jar.” Each week, team members write anonymous notes of support to one another.

“Those notes became a lifeline,” Whitney said. “I don’t think my team realizes how much they helped me, how a simple sentence at the right time can lift your spirits and give you strength to keep going.”

An Unexpected Celebration In late August, Whitney received the news she’d been praying for: her scans were clear.

“I checked MyChart the night of my PET scan, probably around 11:30 p.m., and there it was,” she recalled. “Even though it hadn’t been reviewed by a doctor yet, I just had to look.”

A few days later, her doctor confirmed the results. “That’s when it really sank in,” she said. “I truly believe it was because of the countless prayers lifted up on my behalf.”

After sharing the news with her family, Whitney shared it with her work family as well.

And they had a surprise in store.

Cue the Music A few days later, Whitney was at her desk when a colleague rushed in: “Someone’s getting arrested outside!”

Curious (and admittedly ready for a little excitement) Whitney stepped out onto the porch.

But there were no flashing lights. No sirens. Just her team, gathered in matching pink Warrior Squad T-shirts and blasting “I’m a Survivor” from a speaker. They had secretly put together a brunch in her honor.

“They all know I hate surprises and hate when the spotlight’s on me, so I was shocked,” Whitney laughed. “But seeing everyone come together to celebrate this milestone—I’ll never forget it.”

A Lasting Lesson “This journey has taught me that you never truly realize how deeply you’re cared for until something like this happens,” she said. “While cancer is life-changing, and something I’ll carry with me forever, I believe everything happens for a reason.”

She paused, then added: “I’ll always be thankful for my cancer journey. For the strength it revealed in me. For the love it showed me from others. And for the person it’s helped me become.”

More Than a Workplace Many workplaces claim to be like family. At Cumberlands, Whitney knows it’s more than a claim—it’s a reality. She’s lived it.

In moments of struggle, the culture of genuine care, quiet empathy, and unwavering support made all the difference. And in moments of celebration, it rang loud and clear from a porch in Williamsburg, echoing through the autumn air with every note of “I’m a Survivor.”
