Message from Graduate Medical Education Dear UCSF Fresno Graduates, Congratulations tonight on the culmination of your commitment, diligence, and hard work to achieve your goals and aspirations. We celebrate you! And we applaud the support you have shown for each other and the teamwork you have displayed. We also thank your family, loved ones and friends for all they have contributed during your training. You have persevered to overcome tests and challenges, including those of you who started training during the COVID-19 pandemic. You have truly impressed us with your passion, compassion and empathy embodied in your care for our patients. We are grateful for your unwavering efforts to improve the health of our broader community and to elevate the impact of UCSF Fresno. Now, as new journeys for you begin – whether in patient care, discovery, teaching or community service – we look on with great pride and happiness on this evening as we celebrate the conclusion of your training. KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Keynote Speaker Ivance Pugoy, MD Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, UCSF Ivance Pugoy, MD, is board certified in Internal Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University. His residency in Internal Medicine was completed at the UCSF Fresno where he also served as chief resident. Before receiving the Henry J. Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching last year, Dr. Pugoy has won several teaching awards including the UCSF Fresno Internal Medicine Faculty of the Year Award in 2017 and 2018; Primary Care Faculty of the Year Award in 2023; and Best Faculty Teaching Award from the UCSF LIFE/CORE medical students.

Dr. Pugoy also completed the UCSF Teaching Scholars Program, culminating in the presentation, implementation, and dissemination of a scholarly project on feedback in medical education. His primary areas of interest in teaching include quality improvement, project mentoring, primary prevention and polypharmacy in the elderly.

Leon S. Peters Foundation Resident and Fellow Awards Presented by A Representative of the Leon S. Peters Foundation In December 2011, the Leon S. Peters Resident of the Year Award was established through funding from the Leon S. Peters Foundation in support of the first UCSF Fresno Resident Council. This year, the Resident Council has selected one resident and one fellow, nominated by their peers, who have demonstrated outstanding work in patient and family care, research project success, have volunteered in the community to provide medical assistance where needed, and are overall well-rounded physicians concerned about their patients, research, and community.

Excellence in Primary Care Award Sponsored by Family HealthCare Network Presented by Marisol de la Vega Cardoso Senior Vice President of Administrative Services, Family HealthCare Network This award recognizes and celebrates the commitment and dedication demonstrated by an intern and graduating resident physician for providing exceptional and compassionate primary care at Family HealthCare Network.

Steven N. Parks, MD, Leadership Award Presented by Jennifer N. Davies, MD Central California Ear, Nose, & Throat President, Fresno Madera Medical Society (FMMS) The Fresno Madera Medical Society is honored to present the Steven N. Parks, MD, Leadership Award.

Known for his vision, leadership, and guidance, during his 35 years of practice in Fresno, Dr. Parks made many outstanding contributions to the medical community, the profession, the FMMS and other professional organizations. His dedication and commitment to medicine continue through this leadership award, which was established by the medical society to recognize and encourage excellence in leadership development within organized medicine by residents and fellows and serves to stimulate similar efforts by other physicians in training.

The individual recipient, selected by the FMMS Board of Governors, is recognized during the UCSF Fresno commencement ceremony and is presented with a plaque and a monetary award.

Borba Resident and Fellow Research Awards and Faculty Research Award Presented by Eyad Almasri, MD Assistant Dean for Research, UCSF Fresno Professor of Medicine, UCSF The Faculty Development and Scholarly Activity Committee reviews original research conducted by members of the faculty and house staff. Awards are given to recognize creative research judged to be the most significant and meritorious during the academic year.
