UC Scout World Language Pathways
A Guide for Middle School Parents & Educators in California

Why Early Access in Middle School Matters
Research shows that students who begin world language study earlier develop stronger proficiency, fluency, and cultural competence.¹ Starting in middle school increases the likelihood of reaching higher levels of proficiency by high school and allows students to meet and exceed California’s A–G requirements. Early access also creates opportunities to pursue AP® coursework and potentially earn college credit before graduation.
The following pathway is applicable to German, French, and Spanish language courses at UC Scout. World Language Pathway
For non-heritage learners
If German, French, or Spanish is spoken at home, your student already has a head start! Heritage speakers bring natural listening and speaking skills that nonheritage learners spend years building. Starting a UC Scout World Language course allows heritage speakers to formalize those skills.
For heritage learners
* Most heritage speakers enter at Level 3, where they begin building the formal reading, writing, and grammar skills needed for upper-division coursework. Students with stronger literacy may enter at Level 4.
* AP® Exam scores may qualify for college credit. Varies by institution. ¹
