UC Scout Mathematics Pathways
A Guide for Middle School Parents & Educators in California.
Why Early Access in Middle School Matters
Middle school mathematics plays a critical role in shaping students’ future academic opportunities. Students who complete Algebra I in eighth grade can access more advanced math pathways in high school, including AP® Calculus. Strong preparation and early access help ensure more students are ready to pursue rigorous mathematics and STEM pathways.

*Trigonometry topics are included in Algebra II or Precalculus
Calculus BC or AP® Statistics
*Approved Integrated Mathematics Courses I-III may replace Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.
*AP® Exam scores may qualify for college credit. Varies by institution.

California A–G Requirement: Mathematics (Category C)
Minimum
3 years includes topics in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II (Approved Integrated Mathematics may be used)
Recommended 4 years for competitive UC/ CSU apps
Eligible Grades 7th - 12th grade students

Before You Enroll: What Parents & Guardians Should Know
» Most California districts accept UC Scout coursework, but policies vary. Check with your school or counselor to confirm how credit will appear on the transcript and whether it satisfies local requirements.
» Self-paced doesn’t mean on your own. UC Scout courses are flexible, but with the On-Demand plan, your student will have access to a credentialed California teacher throughout.
