Driven by Our Promise™

LETTER FROM THE UNIVERSITY CITY SCIENCE CENTER PRESIDENT & CEO Welcome to the 2021 Nucleus Awards, presented by CSL Behring! After such an unprecedented year, we are thrilled to come together again, in person and safely, to celebrate the incredible innovations and change-makers across our region. This evening is an opportunity for old friends to connect and new partnerships to form, as we navigate through another challenging year. We are excited for you to join us as we recognize the people and impact worthy of celebration. This event marks my one-year anniversary at the Science Center -- and what a year it has been! With my onboarding and the transformational changes across the healthcare, innovation, and community landscape, the Science Center is at a unique inflection point. We have taken this moment seriously and really reflected on the needs of the ecosystem and how the Science Center can and should address those challenges. This mindset is what has kept the Science Center relevant for 60 years – continuing to evolve to address the unmet needs of our community. So, what is the role of the Science Center emerging from the pandemic and in the years ahead? We advance healthcare innovation from idea to the marketplace through startup support services, allocating capital, gathering the innovation community, and building inclusive STEM career pathways for Philadelphia youth and adults. We are doubling down on our healthcare focus, working to ensure that all Philadelphians can take part in the region’s thriving entrepreneurial and life sciences ecosystem, and fueling startups addressing health inequity with the vital capital they need to improve lives. This year’s honorees reflect the Science Center’s refined focus and how an inflection point can effectuate transformative change that touches lives and shapes futures. Our four 2021 Nucleus Award Honorees – Max Perelman, Della Clark, Tracey Welson-Rossman, and Michelle Freeman found their calling when each observed the earliest signs of a directional shift in culture, business, or community, and inspired transformative change with a ripple effect across Philadelphia and beyond. Whether it was inefficiencies in medical care, systemic funding inequities in minority-led businesses, a lack of gender diversity in the workforce, or a desire to bring different people and new ideas together, these honorees put themselves in motion to act as catalysts for a better future. We hope you enjoy tonight’s program, and we hope you will continue to support our crucial, and – more than ever- timely work. We believe discovery can go beyond improving our lives today, to help create a healthier and more equitable tomorrow. Best regards, Tiffany Wilson President & CEO University City Science Center

ABOUT THE 2021 NUCLEUS AWARDS

The Nucleus Awards convenes the region’s leaders, innovators, groundbreakers and champion networkers to celebrate our 2021 Commercialization, Capital, Cultivator and Convener Awardees. Through engaging fireside chats with WHYY’s Maiken Scott, Nucleus attendees will hear directly from four visionaries about their collective body of work that earned them the 2021 Nucleus Awards.

2021 NUCLEUS AWARDS HOST

MAIKEN SCOTT Award-Winning Journalist, WHYY

Maiken Scott is the host and executive producer of WHYY’s The Pulse - a national health and science radio show and podcast that explores the people and places at the heart of health and science. Since its launch in December 2013, The Pulse has crafted a unique, “groundlevel” approach to telling compelling stories and breaking down complicated issues. The show airs on more than 75 public radio stations across the country and has a strong podcast following. The team currently includes two producers, three reporters and a fellow. For the Pulse, Maiken has explored Natural History museums as ‘time capsules for our planet,’ Thomas Jefferson’s ill-fated attempts to study Native American languages, and why so many patients cry after waking up from anesthesia, just to name a few topics. Maiken grew up in Karlsruhe, Germany (where Heinrich Hertz did his famous work on radio waves, and an early version of the bicycle was invented.) She moved to the US when she was in her early twenties. She studied journalism at Temple University in Philadelphia, and also completed a graduate degree in American history at that university. Before hosting The Pulse, Maiken worked as a reporter and producer at WHYY. She started as an intern at WHYY – and never left.
