The revamped Wellness & Fitness Institute is now open in the Recreation Center. Launched at the start of the 2014 academic year, the facility was given a full makeover. First created in Robertson Gymnasium in 1985, the institute provides education, experience, and personal health/fitness assessment. Specific services includes testing of cardiovascular/fitness, flexibility, body composition, and more. The institute also serves as a training ground for students participating in the Department of Exercise and Sport Studies certificate program. The Gaucho Recreation & Exercise Classes, (formally Leisure Review Classes) are fitness and special interest courses geared towards helping participants gain or improve a skill or talent. Classes cover a wide range of topics including aikido, afro-brazilian dance, lifeguard training, wilderness first-aid certification, pottery, and more. In response to popular demand, fitness equipment has been upgraded throughout the Recreation Center with top of the line cardiovascular apparatuses. New additions include cutting edge lateral elliptical and stair machines, some of which come complete with audio-visual interfaces for television viewing, web surfing, and social networking. Premium strength and conditioning equipment has been added, including multi purpose weight machines and weight room racks to maximize training space for high demand compound lifts such as squats, deadlifts, presses, and pulls. Finally, olympic weightlifting platforms have been installed to accommodate specific training needs. Users can be authorized for olympic lifts through the Gaucho Pulse Program. With the dawn of the new year, we look forward to helping you reach your health and wellness goals. Whether through an assessment at the Wellness & Fitness Institute, challenging yourself to try something new with a GauchoREC course, or working towards a sustainable change with Gaucho Pulse, we will accompany you each step of the way to Find Your Fit this new year!
